I just learned I will be laid off at the start of April and my income is 3/5 or so of all our income. My daughter is still awaiting some admission decisions to her top schools. Should I appeal aid immediately to all schools or will that hurt her admissions chances?
Depends on if a school is need aware or not - and many might have made decisions.
I would wait for the decision, then appeal on life changing events - as aid is from two years ago taxes, etc.
Just my “logic” but @kelsmom or others might have a better answer.
I might also add - depending on what you were expecting to pay on NPCs and now what you could afford to pay - it may be time to develop Plan B and C - so you are ready to go if you need to pivot at this late time.
Depending on stats (forgetting desires), there might be cheaper options, much cheaper. Of course, I state that without knowing where you applied, stats, and what your expectation was on paying prior.
The good news is - if one is flexible, if an appeal doesn’t help, there’s likely other options.
You can call to discuss your situation and find out what information you would need to submit in order to request a special circumstances review for job loss in case your D is accepted. You can explain the situation and say that you want to get your ducks in a row in case of acceptance.
Every school is different, and some may be happy to review the situation upon acceptance. Others may ask you to wait … you might get a new job quickly, in which case your layoff will be irrelevant.
