Waitlist Discussion- Fall 2020 Virginia Tech

Maybe consider community college or gap year if you don’t get off waitlists. . Start at CC and pay close attention to articulation agreements and only apply to schools you are willing to attend next time. CNU and VMI were/are poor fits if you absolutely don’t want to go there! If you are a Virginia resident(sounds like it) , look into ODU, VCU, GMU, which also have engineering and are less competitive for admission. Good luck.

Thoughts on the waitlist, especially engineering. I agree that the international and OOS students they anticipated enrolling should drop a good bit. The VT Engineering parent facebook page it is full of OOS parents still leaning towards VT over Purdue, etc. but it seems logical this category of students would decline under the pandemic circumstances. Keeping closer to home is on the minds of a lot of parents.

The waitlist is absolutely unranked. Much effort is put into a well rounded class. There will not be movement on the waitlist until after May 1st. This year will be a record number of last minute deposits. The economy is a significant factor and with the probability of fall being online this could cause deferment requests to be unusually high. Engineering is such a coveted spot I don’t think many will opt out even if it’s online.

I anticipate the in-state students will not benefit from the OOS/international students declining the spots. VT will go back through the applications and try to replace with similar student profiles. The hope for in-state students is their in-state peers getting off the waitlist at their #1 OOS choice leaving an in-state spot at VT open. A mom can dream…

VCU is actively courting students and has extended the June 1st date so they can be a fall back plan for those students playing the wait list game. They are seeing the trend of very late acceptances. My student has received a hand written letter from the Dean of Engineering, a call from one of the professors and a letter from the same professor. But growing up in RVA area there is zero desire to attend VCU and the commuter feel of the school is not sparking joy. Also VCU engineering runs about 1K a year more than the significantly higher ranked VT Engineering program.

We are looking at paying 70K more for NC State engineering because my high achieving, VA public school child was wait listed for our VA public university. It’s ridiculous that we are considering this with the current state of the economy and plan to eat the $300 deposit and somehow pray she comes to terms with VCU for a year. (very humbling with a 1500 SAT, 13 AP classes, 4.2 weighted etc). With the massive disappointment of not celebrating 18th bday, prom and graduation the $300 is an investment in her mental health for the next few weeks. Praying earnestly to get off off the VT wait list. The VCU June 1st deadline gives us some wiggle room.

@MomRVA Ugh, I’m so sorry for her. With those stats there is no logical reason for her not to be accepted. I know people will say ‘the essays count more’ or whatever, but c’mon (and the essays were too superficial anyway imho). I agree, pay the other deposit and keep fingers crossed. Some other large universities are accepting a lot more students than usual late in the game to make up for huge uncertainties in normal enrollment models for this fall. So perhaps VT will draw a LOT of kids off the waitlist, and I hope your child is one of them!

My son is in a similar spot. 4.0 unweighted GPA, 1540 SAT, 10 AP’s (all 5’s), lots of ECs, etc.), but he’s OOS. Insert Clemson and Penn State instead of VCU and NC State, although Clemson gave him a decent merit scholarship. My son basically grew up going to VT football. Sad.

@HokieCrazy if your son doesn’t get in I’m going to really lose faith in the process.

VT just confirmed this. Orientation, summer academy, and all camps also moved online.

I just got taken off the waitlist and was offered admission

Daughter just accepted off waitlist for architecture, OOS.

Same D for engineering. OOS

Congratulations. All 3 so far OOS? Hope to see some instate acceptances coming in as well. Good luck!

How were you notified?

@sevmom I am OOS as well

How were you notified?

@HokieCrazy I received an email no change to portal

Is your waitlist thing still there?

Thank you. Do you have until May 1st to decide, then?

@HokieCrazy yes until May 1

Thank you. Happy for you, happy they are starting to pull, but sad that my son hasn’t been, yet. Congrats!

Hey, my son OOS just got in off the waitlist, too!

Email.
My D committed to Penn State engineering last night, likely PSU.
Have not been able to visit either school. Anyone that can compare the 2?
