Waitlist Discussion- Fall 2020 Virginia Tech

It’s a tough call. They are extremely similar schools. Great engineering, in the middle of nowhere, football-focused, etc. The main differences are Penn State is larger and they don’t spend as much on their facilities and I think Penn State is a little more expensive (OOS/OOS), so it likely comes down to where your D feels more comfortable. Both are excellent. Can’t go wrong with the decision.

I was taken off the waitlist and granted admission for engineering earlier today.

Congratulations on getting accepted. can you tell me if your portal still shows the “You have requested to remain on the wait list” section? thanks

@korr02 Congratulations. Are you instate or out of state?

Do you guys think they will take a lot of people off the waitlist this year? I was already accepted and am attending. Asking for a good friend. He was waitlisted with lower stats. But this year they seem to be accepting a lot of lower stat students over higher stat students

My son had higher than their average stat range. With that being said, I have always heard that some schools will intentionally overlook the applicants with MUCH HIGHER stats because they are assuming that they are the safety school for that student and they don’t want to waste time, an enrollment spot, or a merit scholarship offer on a student who they truly don’t believe will go there.

@vrrrrrrrr mine changed to admitted later today

is anyone now missing the “You have requested to remain on the wait list” section and it’s blank? On the 2018 thread that was an early indicator of eventual acceptance from the waitlist. can’t figure out the timing of that though

Just saw that they even gave my daughter a $3K scholarship, nice surprise after being waitlisted!

My daughter was just taken off the waitlist today admitted for computer engineering. She has a 4.1 GPA and a 1500 SAT- 760 in math. also took SAT subject tests for Math l and Math ll and got a 750 on both . Heavy background in engineering and robotics so we were pretty surprised she didn’t get in the first time. We are out of state too so they get more money from us.

Great to see the waitlist process at least starting. For the question above - yes on the board here we have mostly all felt that there will be a good number coming off the waitlist this year. But when I say good number that means probably 600-800 … which is good compared to 0 last year. Your probably going to see some of the high stat that accepted a waitlist spot go off first and its really going to depend on major by major basis what you see as far as movement.

As we are still May 1 - waitlist pulls are going to be from departments that are seeing a low trend in certain areas. Looks like out of state engineering acceptances are trending low - so they are moving early off the list (not unexpected as we have been wondering if the Coronavirus will scare some out of state kids from making the jump so far away from home - I know I have a neighbor that falls in that category).

Do you think this is a daily trickle of pulls from the waitlist…or maybe a weekly one…from here until they start reaching the numbers they want? My son is now refreshing his email inbox every 5 minutes. LOL.

Probably happen in batches by department. Never know.

Something hopeful is that the waitlists pulls seem like they are trending toward out of state right now - so maybe you will get some good news soon.

A lot of OOS will come off the list hoping that many of these students will accept and pay the higher tuition. Schools are really hurting right now and anything they can get, they will be extremely happy. Keep in mind that just because a student pays the enrollment fee, it does not necessarily mean they will show up in August. The economic situation is pretty dicey out there and anything can change between now and then. From VTech to OSU to Michigan State, they are all over admitting. If they are forced to go online in the Fall Semester, there is a very good chance, many students are not even going to want to attend, especially those paying the higher OOS tuition Some will just go to a local community college and reapply a year later or so.

If a high achieving students gets a coveted spot in a program like VT engineer they aren’t going to withdraw because of an online semester. Paying the OOS cost has already been figured out and it’s a big gamble to reapply in a year. Those who are financially able to encourage their student to apply OOS may not be as impacted by the economic turn.

It would take a very level
headed mature teen to go from a nationally ranked program to local
Community college.

I was admitted off the waitlist but am deciding between a private university and Virginia tech. Does anyone have any recommendations to help decide?

What is the private university? How’s the cost difference? Which engineering discipline are you looking at? I think for the most part, it’ll come down to what is important to you.

@HokieCrazy its University of San Diego I’m from California. With scholarships they’re about the same. I would be majoring in environmental sciences at either.

@moundalay How do the programs at the two schools compare? What are the costs? Logistics related to travel to one vs. the other? How do extracurriculars compare? Is being at a school with a large D1 sports presence appeal to you (or not)?
