Waitlist Discussion- Fall 2020 Virginia Tech

In addition to what @ShenVal18 has mentioned, it seems that the biggest difference is the urban nature of San Diego vs. the “college town” feel of Virginia Tech. Typically people prefer one over the other, so I think that’s another consideration. And if you are in California, I would think the distance would be a huge factor to you, as well.

Good luck with your decision. Make yourself a little pros/cons list and see which one feels right for you.

@ShenVal18 I’m about 2 hours from the San Diego one. Both seem to have good amounts of extracurriculars I am interested in. The sports interest me but I’m fine without it.

@moundalay Since you mentioned the costs being comparable, then it comes down to how the programs compare and how disruptive/costly/inconvenient the travel across country will be for you and the semi-urban vs. more rural environment. Oh, and it gets cold in Blacksburg.

And that doesn’t mean 60 degrees like it does in California.

Yeah, and apparently it gets a little breezy from time to time as well.

Thank you for your help!

Last tidbit of advice… if you decide on VT, always remember that it’s VT, Tech, Virginia Tech, or VPI. Vtech is a crummy electronics manufacturer, and VA Tech is lazy ESPN announcer/chyron speak.

@MomRVA A lot of people’s financial situation has changed drastically, so that is a factor that wasn’t there when they made their original decision.

My DC was surprisingly wait listed at VA Tech (should have been a"safety") and already has been accepted off of the waitlist. He has chosen a different school, so that moves the wait list.

When did your DC get off of the waitlist? What major? Where did he choose to go instead?

Hopefully, those getting off the waitlist that know they dont plan to attend will decline quickly. Also, it would probably be helpful if those still on the waitlist that have moved on and now don’t plan to go to Virginia Tech, remove themselves from the waitlist. Looks like there is still nobody here that is instate that has gotten off the waitlist. The yield will likely be lower for OOS students , so they seem to be starting there.

@vrrrrrrrr The section isn’t blank, but there isn’t anything allowing me to take myself off the waitlist or change my decision to remain on the waitlist

I believe once you’ve requested to remain on the waitlist, you need to email admissions to request to be removed. There does not appear to be a link directly on the VT portal.

Well not only did my kid get off waitlist this past week, but today he got offered a scholarship. 4K a semester. Already committed elsewhere. Major was arts and science biology

Was your kid’s notification on Tuesday and did it come with the scholarship already in there or did that come separately later?

Interesting, in the letter it said that you are able to return to the website to change your decision to remain on the waitlist.

Just curious - those that committed elsewhere and don’t see themselves or their kids at Virginia Tech, why stay on the waitlist? Virginia Tech is not known for giving out major merit aid (wondering if 3 or 4 thousand merit to OOS kids will move the needle much for most families unless Virginia Tech was their number one preferred school to begin with). Getting off the waitlist if it still is/was the number one choice and the money to pay is there, seems different. Hope to also see some instate kids come off the waitlist soon. Anybody yet?

There is a button to cancel your application right below the button to accept your offer. My daughter just declined her offer sadly but hopefully it will open up a spot for someone here waiting! Good luck all, it’s been a pleasure!!

As a help to those who are waitlisted, my DD was just offered admittance to VT for architecture. She thought this was a target school for her, so we were surprised that she was waitlisted. This early response is a nice surprise.

However, she also received a yes from Cal Poly and that is her top pick.

Are they taking everyone off waitlist except HokieCrazy’s kid ?

Just joking but glad to see there is still movement and hope for those on the waitlist.
