Waitlist Discussion- Fall 2020 Virginia Tech

That sounds like a very good sign, @drewh02 . Good luck!

@drewh02 - Congrats…Sounds like an offer is coming from UVA! They want to make sure you’ll accept before offering.

@drewh02 - That’s great news from UVA. You are truly deserved to end up at such amazing school. We are so happy for you!

@cbl1 I wasn’t asking about pulling from waitlists, I was referring to a comment regarding admissions. Also, I was not suggesting that admissions doesn’t look at major. (I’ve had two kids apply and be accepted in the last few years so I’m aware of the application process and recent changes). What I was told by a personal contact in admissions a while back is that the admission criteria is the same across the university with the exception of architecture and engineering. There is lots of speculation and conjecture made on these boards, but I thought perhaps someone had concrete knowledge of a change to that because that’s been implied with some comments. But I’m thinking that’s a no.

No movement on waitlist process today? I don’t have a good feeling about this.

I think everybody that has responded to you is saying the same thing, though. Whether the criteria is the same or not, if there are too many people that fit that criteria in a given year, Tech will still take the higher quality candidate, so in a given year, they don’t just accept everybody that fits the criteria. Each department has their own quota to fill, so the example that @cbl1 gave you still holds true, whether it is waitlist or not. Admissions will never announce that ā€œBiology’s criteria is higher, nowā€ headed into an admissions year, but the candidate pool may make it higher in that given year. Engineering and Architecture are historically more competitive, so they do declare that, but other departments may vary slightly year over year.

Yes, I understand all of that, and most of it is well-researched conjecture. That’s fine. I was wondering if something specific/official had been communicated (there have been a LOT of changes to this process in the last 3 years) but obviously the answer to that is no. No worries, onward and upward for the next batch of applicants. I’ll have another one in that batch, so it will be a unique application year for sure.

Last fall, the VT Admissions Facebook and Instagram pages had live Q and A sessions with admissions representatives. They were EXTREMELY helpful and had very specific advice. I believe they are still available on their FB page. I highly recommend following those pages and watching the live sessions this fall if you have students applying! Best of luck to those still waiting for this year!

@doodlewrangler thanks for that information. I’ve had 2 kids admitted, so I’m pretty comfortable with the process, but thank you. Plus living 5 minutes from campus doesn’t hurt

Lucky you! ? Hoping this info will benefit others on the forum, then. These sessions had very specific guidance about which majors were going to fill up the quickest, which majors NOT to choose if you wanted to maximize your admissions chances…topics that I’ve seen discussed a lot on this forum. Good luck to all!

Curious…did you get off from the waitlist in engineering?

Just assuming there have been no pulls from the waitlist in the past 2 days…anyone heard anything?

Feeling less optimistic with each day. Going to have my son move forward with his housing contract for his #2 choice. He was hesitating with roommate selection because he didn’t want to leave anyone hanging if he got pulled from the VT waitlist.

@Adwc19 If he doesn’t have to pick an actual roommate now (and hasn’t committed to anyone yet), could he give it more time if VT remains his number one choice? There could still be more kids getting off the waitlist. And most kids are resilient and understanding if a potential roommate gets off a waitlist and could probably regroup.

@sevmom We’re reading the fine print of the housing contract and see that it’s binding with pretty strong language about owing the entire amount for housing if we cancel. So, looks like we’ll sit tight until the deadline after all and hope for good news from VT! My son’s most recent correspondence with VT Admissions said that he would receive a final decision by July 1. Of course, when he was deferred to regular decision, he was told he would get a final decision by February 22, but was then waitlisted. A long road for an ED applicant who submitted his application in October 2019!

VT’s waitlist process for 2018 was completed around mid-May (no pulls for 2019 due to over enrollment). Will this be the case for waitlist process this year? We will soon find out.

My kid applied ED in August years ago, deferred, then waitlisted. Got off VT waitlist on June 4 but had already decided he would be happy at JMU (which had also originally deferred him EA, then waitlisted him, then took him off the waitlist in May). He/we had really gotten excited about JMU and weren’t expecting to get off the VT waitlist. The acceptance email was out of the blue as he had no recent contact with admissions. He was actually conflicted initially and stressed about having to make another decision ( why did they have to accept me now-I was all set with JMU kind of thing ).

I feel for you, definitely a long road. Good luck @Adwc19 !

@Adwc19 Any chance is your son ā€œplanningā€ on attending a school in Harrisonburg? In that category here. Was reading the contract today and looks like we’d lose 10% of the housing if we pull out after we sign. And, saw there were two dates had to sign – one next Friday and the other mid-July. But, not signing means that son can’t start looking for a roommate. And, the mental part too of waiting. He’d still drop and go if he had the chance though at this point but getting deeper into it. So, conflicted if we should just jump in and sign or hold – thinking on this and reading up more soon. AND, is it possible VT has already filled Pamphlin BI and so he should move on? – plan to be first Duke in family of Hoos & Hokies (or shall I reverse that for my hubby?). good luck all!

@Curiousity2 - Yes, we’re in the same boat. He’s hoping for a spot in Pamplin too. We are prepared to lose the initial deposit, but 10% of the housing definitely adds to the conflict. Our oldest is a Hokie, so he’s still holding out hope he’ll end up there. Hard enough with the uncertainty related to COVID-19…sure would be nice to be able to be 100% committed to his school so he can keep his eye on the prize.

@Curiousity2 @Adwc19 Something to consider is to get 100% committed to JMU, now, and stay on the waitlist. If your child is pulled from the waitlist they can then ā€˜defer’ admissions to Virginia Tech, which guarantees that they can transfer into Virginia Tech at any point for up to 2 years. If after the first year at JMU, they still want to transfer, they can. If they don’t want to, then they are clearly enjoying JMU. The only thing this would cost you is the $400 matriculation fee at Virginia Tech, which is necessary in order to then defer. This is a new rule at VT because of covid-19…read here: https://vt.edu/admissions/frequently-asked-questions/covid-19.html
