Waitlist success stories

turning down spots at Columbia, Duke, and Georgetown SFS!

@ funktastic - I would like to find out if I get accepted, but my parents would rather have me go to Emory. Emory and NYU were both my top choices so if I got into either one I would have been happy, Emory just responded earlier than NYU so looks like I’m going there. I sent an email to NYU stating that I wanted to take myself off, but whenever I send them emails, they never respond back -_- so I still might be in consideration for their wait list.

BTW anyone know the email for U of Michigan? I couldn’t find it yesterday.

Question from an anxious mom; does anyone know when one might hear from Cornell or BC’s wait lists? Do they only tell you if you get in or do they let you know you haven’t been chosen as well?

Not sure about either one specifically, but virtually every school will let all the students on the waitlist know when the waitlist is officially closed.

^^^ thats my thread…

I was only accepted to 1 school, with 3 waitlist, and 11 rejections…I just got off Emory’s waitlist…all I did was follow the advice of some ccers, and this article which they recommended…

Nonie, which school did you apply for in NYU? Well, it’s great that you got into one of your top choices. I have many friends who did not get into their top choice schools so it’s really great to hear some good news. I usually go to the admissions forum when I email them, they respond pretty quick. Btw, I have no idea what michigan’s email is, I just usually just go to the ‘ask a question’ site.

COLMOM, I heard that most universities will be informing students about their waitlist status as early as next week but I couldn’t find an exact date. Sorry! All the best to your son!

I’m turning down my spot to Bucknell in order to attend USC. One more spot for everyone waiting for Bucknell.

Though, I am staying on Vassar’s waitlist (hopefully, I get accepted).

For everyone waiting, including my S: remember this may be a very long process. Just because someone gives up a spot at school A doesn’t mean school A goes to the waiting list because they offered spots to more kids than they could actually take, knowing some will drop out. But more importantly, some kids like nhsharvard above accept a spot and then wait for a spot somewhere else. If nhsharvard gets a call from Vassar 3 weeks from now and pulls out of USC, then USC has to start all over again (do we have enough Freshman already or do we go to the waiting list.) And with a record number of applications for a number of selective schools, kids who get into 5 or 6 schools and then are waitlisted at 3 more, triggers a very complex process. (imagine if nhsharvard decides to say No to Vassar, then Vassar has to go back, a month from now to a much reduced waitlist of folks many of whom might have decided to give up in week 3 or were taken off a different waiting list.)
In a nutshell, it might be a long summer but until the school you are hoping for says “we are done, hope can stay alive,” and as I always tell my son “Its better to be the last kid into the school you love, than the first kid into the school you don’t.” Although that may not be true for housing, I guess…

I wonder how long each school gives for the student to decide when offered a spot off the wait list. Do they give the financial aid info over the phone?

Funk, I was waitlisted for Stern at NYU.

China, Emory gave me 72 hours, 3 days, to decide. I’m not sure about financial aid information though.

I heard that Boston College’s wait list is active. Has anyone heard from them?

So they make you decide without even informing you abt the financial aid package? Does every school handle the waitlist this way? What if you tell them you are going and then end up not being able to afford the price tag?

No actually my friend was given her financial aid package when Carnegie Mellon sent her letter saying that she was placed on the wait list. They sort of used it to bribe her to stay on the wait list which she currently is still on.

Waitlist @ U of Chicago: acceptances have begun.
Union College: my S received an offer. guess what he was waiting for? see above.

update: my S’s top choice came through about an hour ago. He is pulling out of Villanova (accepted) and an offer from Union (NY) today as well. Parents are ecstatic; S was VERY emotional…
always keep hope alive until a fact tells you that its over.

Congrats to your S, Bristolstomp!

Just want to bump this thread.

Just got a call from an Admissions officer. Got accepted to NYU CAS 2013.

congrats hello2ume! I just got off a waitlist today too so yay for both of us :)

hello2ume and irunoninsulin, did you guys do anything to further supplement your wait list status? thanks!
