Waitlisted last year... chances this year?

So I was waitlisted by UVa last year and have since taken a gap year in which I have interned, worked for an NGO, etc. I also took the math II and literature subject tests in october and have received scores of 800 and 790 respectively on them. I am also going to retake the SAT in november and aim to raise my score of 2120 to 2250+.

Needless to say, I am definitely not sending the same application in. My question is - will my waitlist from last year help, be detrimental or mean nothing at all?

I hope you didn’t take a gap year solely to have a second shot at UVA. IMO, your application will be judged against the current year applicants. The waitlist decision from last year is irrelevant. I’m not sure whether incremental improvements in your SAT subject tests or overall SAT score will be the determinant in getting accepted. Your HS GPA won’t change so put your time and effort into the essays. Good luck.
