Waitlists -- Will this year be different?

Do you mean that at CSS Profile using schools, the FAFSA issue will likely have little impact?

Schools using CSS Profile will have plenty of information, but they do not necessarily claim to meet need (however they define need).

I don’t know if this year will be different - and won’t know til after it happens. I surmise, schools may have to go deeper on WL given the late deadlines. Their yields will be lower.

The interesting thing will be if they have to go deeper, how does that then impact other schools who now lose kids they thought were matriculating? That will depend, of course, on how many times a school is hit with a desertion due to a waitlist spot being grabbed elsewhere.

We were closed out of a Verto 1st semester abroad program ā€œ15 minutesā€ before our call with the Verto advisor. (This is one of 4 schools that have offered DS Verto with guaranteed Spring admission.) DS got a phone call this week from this verto program saying there had been ā€œmovementā€ and would he still be interested.

Looks like UTK is offering spots from their waitlist now. IDK how many

Yes, there is speculation about more ā€œsummer meltā€ (i.e., students enrolling then later backing out to take a WL position offered elsewhere) than typical this year.

I agree, and the numbers reveal that Uva admitted hundreds more in all three rounds this yr over last yr.

Those numbers are the students who accepted the waitlist offer. 2020 was unprecedented as afar as how many offers were made. For example, Uva offered a spot off the waitlist to over 900…and eventually got 165 students to take the spot(the CDS number):

From Dean J’s blog:

How many people got offers to come off the waiting list in the past?

Here’s over a decade of data, which should show you how unpredictable this part can be. I don’t have a breakdown of where the offers were for these years.

2020 - 915
2019 - 8
2018 - 13
2017- 117
2016 - 360
2015- 402
2014- 42
2013 - 185
2012 - 284ā€

Do you know if CDS accounts for deferred students, as so many did in 2020? Assuming UVA allows those kids who gained acceptance to defer for one year.

I am not aware how the CDS counts deferrals or if it does

Purdue just extended their enrollment date from May 15 to June 1. Totally predictable given the FAFSA fiasco. The UC’s are certain to follow suit any day now. This totally sucks for those of us hoping that our kids can get off those UC waitlists. Argh…

Just saw a post from a kid getting off UC Irvine waitlist.

Our local community foundation that houses a lot of the local scholarships and use FAFSA and Pell Grant eligibility for decision making just announced another delay, so that is more students sitting on multiple options while others are on waiting lists.

Do you think Ivy’s will be affected by FAFSA and melt? My guess is no. D24 has a good option but really would love to see if her Dream is possible

My son said that two classmates were offered spots off the UC Irvine waitlist yesterday. I am very curious whether UC’s offering WL spots before SIR date (which is currently May 15 for UC schools, but likely to move to June 1 soon) is normal. Or, does it portend well for more movement off WL’s this year?

I don’t think anyone knows. If it’s roughly the same number of applicants chasing roughly the same number of seats, then in theory it shouldn’t make a difference. It’s possible some students will get fed up with the FAFSA issues and say no to college. I doubt that will impact the Ivies.

Pure speculation section:
Some students may not be able to commit on May 1 or May 15 and so colleges with earlier deadlines could be impacted. If even a handful of college admissions offices start to panic about their yields and start pulling off their waitlists, it could have a cascading effect.

Yeah, extended enrollment deadlines are likely to push waitlist decisions deeper into the summer. I do think in general there will be more WL movement this year than in last couple of years, but will vary obviously school to school.

In addition to many schools extending Decision Day to May 15 or June 1 (and housing thankfully), we are seeing movement pre-DD. I’m only tracking some publics, but have seen:
USC South Carolina , UT Knoxville, Virginia Tech (in debate), here UC Irvine.

There are surely more.

S24 attended an admitted students event at UCSD yesterday, and waitlisted students were also in attendance. Perhaps the admissions officer was speaking too casually, but he told the waitlisted students that decisions would be made in waves, possibly starting next week.

odd that students not admitted would be included in an admitted student day.
