It wasn’t an actual admitted students day. We signed up for a regular tour (the same kind that anyone could sign up for on the website), and then when we arrived they told anyone who has been admitted or waitlisted should break off and they would get a different tour and a different presentation.
Add University of Washington to that list.
I think you’re right… schools that may have pulled off the WL near May 1 in the past may wait until May 15 or June 1 to go to the WL this year.
But I have to imagine these schools may need to go deeper into their WLs if they’re notifying kids in June, since many kids will have registered for classes and have roommates by then. My S24 has orientation the first week of June, and I know he’ll decline the WL spot of his top choice if he was at/finished orientation.
I can’t get past the paywall for this, but based on what little I can see, I assume it’s just reporting the CDS data for the schools from last year? I feel like wait list usage has varied so wildly in the past few years that I’m not sure last year’s stats really mean anything.
Paywall is a pain. Thought some might like to see the Admission and WL movement for potential comparison
I don’t see a paywall (maybe ublock is saving me?). Either way, it seems like they copied the data from UC admissions by source school for 2023 (which is publicly available) and added a few nice graphs.
I am hopeful waitlists will be more fluid this year because of the financial aid mess and colleges pushing back the deadlines?
I’ve heard from multiple colleges that their deposits are way down this year even if applications and visits are up. They are really nervous and expect pandemonium between mid-May to early June.
They said they could end up somewhere between having way too many acceptances to going deep into their waitlist and they have no idea how it’s going to play out. One said they thought this year was worse than 2021 for admissions.
At least they are anxious and uncertain too. Misery loves company.
We heard of a Rice admit today
U Miami, Wake Forest waitlists also moving…
Someone on the CMU threads got admitted today as well.
I’m
This might sound crazy but I am so fascinated by college admissions and I am very excited to see how this year pans out. The next couple of months are going to be wild!
I think the FAFSA mess has upended everyone across the board.
And on top of that, what is taking place on college campuses as kids and parents are making their decisions right now…that is another layer that many families are grappling with, too.
Heard of a rice waitlist admit yesterday as well
This is good info, and hardly surprising given the FAFSA debacle. For my twins’ sake, I’m hoping that colleges have to reach deep into their WL’s this year, since they are waitlisted at multiple UC’s. Waitlist purgatory…Started writing essays last summer, and we still don’t know up from down. It really sucks for them (and to a lesser extent, their mother and I).
On the bright side, if there are a lot of visits this year, that could signal there are many more cross admits this year trying to narrow down what college they want to go to.
Another factor at play here is that applicants are now applying to an absurd number of schools because acceptance rates are so low. It’s a self-fulfilling prophesy in a way. My son’s friend, for example, applied to over 40 schools. He is an elite student and ended up at a great school, but he likely was admitted to over 30 schools, so he is saying no to essentially 30+ schools. That does not, of course, mean that 30+ other kids are getting off a waitlist, because colleges admit more students than they have spots for (given their historical yield), but applying to over 40 schools creates mayhem in the system in my view. Colleges then must put a huge number of kids on waitlists as an enrollment management tool, then we all find ourselves on forums like this in the endless waiting game…
Well, only some small proportion of applicants are applying to that many schools. Per common app, average numbers of schools applied to this year is 5.74. (Note common app does not capture all the app volume)
Number of common app applicants increased, so I agree there are more apps happening, but the average app per student is not that high, and 30-40 seems really unnecessary, even for merit hunters.
