I’m working with my son on his essay topic for the UC essay prompt#1. I know that an awesome essay can make or break someone’s chances of making in to their top school choices. We are focusing on how quiet he is and how he’s found his “voice” through music - in particular vinyl records/old school record player and classic rock. We are focusing on how his personality can be told through his record collection - he’s passionate about classic rock and vinyl. Does this sound the least bit interesting? Any ideas to improve are greatly appreciated…
I like this idea, with one caveat. Instead of focusing on how quiet he is, I would just focus on how he’s found his voice through the old records.
Edited to add: I don’t know what UC prompt #1 is. I was just commenting on this as an essay subject. The prompt may be such that my caveat should be ignored.
It sounds fine. Just remember that the essay is about him, and not the record collection. I think these essays need to be simple and direct, because the reader is not going to spend the time to tease out the nuances of any literary devices.
Please note that there is a separate essay forum where this question can be asked and there are helpful pins at the top to read. Personally it is a good topic but it doesn’t address the prompt well, in my opinion. It could possibly be used for the second prompt.
