California daughter, recent NYC transplant, needs a warm (somewhat professional) pair of gloves. Any ideas? Thanks, from 70* California!!
Honestly, I gave up on professional and focused on warm. Love the ones from LL BEAN. They are also at a price point (for warm) that when one inevitably gets lost, this season or down the road, you won’t need to mourn for a month.
A lifelong northeastener, I don’t think leather gloves are warm at all. I’ve taken to wearing down mittens. Yeah, I look like I’m eight years old, but my hands – especially my fingers – stay warm.
Lord & taylor cashmere lined. If they arent lined dont get them.
I have cashmere lined leather gloves…and they are fine for driving in a heated car…but they are NOT fine for anything else. They look nice…but…
I have both fleece lined and down filled mittens. That’s what i wear outdoors.
So if your daughter is looking for something trendy to wear outdoors in NYC when it’s bitter cold, she might want a different choice than leather.
She can wear her nice warm clunky gloves or mittens…and the second she enters her work building…just slip them into her tote. No one in her office will ever see the clunky gloves.
As a note…this week is unusually cold for NYC…and all of New England.
For more typical winter weather, just to keep the chill off of her hands…cashmere lined leather will be OK. You don’t have to spend a fortune. And you certainly don’t have to get them at LT. I have Coach gloves that cost a lot, and another off brand that cost all of $10. Both cashmere lined…both adequate for cold but not bitter cold weather.
I also have a very warm pair of Northface fleece gloves that are very warm. Mine happens to be hot pink…but maybe they make them in black.
They do!

We Mainers can tell when someone is “from away” and not used to cold weather - they wear gloves instead of mittens.
Ditto all the previous comments - leather gloves are nice for cool weather in the 50F range, but don’t do much when it gets below freezing. When I lived off-campus in Pittsburgh (20-30 minute walk) I had both goretex ski gloves and mittens. Mittens were the choice when it got really cold (like wearing 4-5 layers cold), and I wouldn’t even use the thumb hole; my poor thumb would get frozen sitting all by its lonesome unless it was with the other fingers! The heavy ski gloves were great when it wasn’t quite as cold.
I expect NYC would get even colder than Pittsburgh too! Although it’s probably most practical to plan for having several different pairs of gloves/mittens to match the weather and your outfits. In addition to the heavy gloves and mittens I also had a lighter pair of wool gloves which were pretty awesome because they were warm and also slim enough to put my hands in my pockets and easy to stash when off.
Gloves make my hands cold. Mittens are best!
On NYE in NYC, I was walking around at 10° and a pair of very inexpensive (good quality) chenille gloves kept me very warm. I have many pairs of gloves, but they are too restrictive for my fingers. Since I am from CA, I’ve never experienced sub zero temperatures.
I have cashmere lined leather gloves that I wear for driving no matter how cold it is. I wear them when walking around until it gets into the low 40’s.
For walking the dogs when it’s below 40, I wear down gloves because mittens are too bulky for holding the leashes. When it’s as cold as it’s been the last week, I don’t walk the dogs at all.
I hate wearing gloves, so I rarely do. I do like cashmere-lined leather. I usually get them at Macy’s. Otherwise I mostly just keep my hands up inside the sleeves of my H’s old down parka, which is my go-to coat in really cold weather. (Like now!) I do have some extremely warm gloves from LLBean. Haven’t worn gloves yet this winter.
It was -28 degrees F at our house this morning. Coldest temperature I’ve ever seen! It’s 5 right now and my adult son just went out in shorts.
I agree that mittens really are warmer. But if she insists on gloves how about some gloves that are intended for fitness but are relatively warm and “neutral”? Some examples:

Thank you all. Great responses as usual! I am going to copy paste some of your responses, so that my DD will be more likely to believe me when I say get mittens!
As far as leather, in my mind I envisioned sort of a suede-y shearling lined pair. Never really pictured a thinner glove. Good to know about cashmere lined gloves…sounds lovely!
This sounds silly but if you wear a hat your hands are warmer. But wear gloves also. Depends on how long she’s going to be out and how cold her hands get which kind of gloves to wear.
My sil has cold hands, she wears ski mittens. Mine don’t get as cold so I’m fine in gloves and I’m too hot in mittens. But I must own a dozen pair of gloves/mittens for seemingly every occasion
I have many, many single mittens!
If you are looking for warmer suede gloves, Ugg is the way to go, like this (or the pairs linked within):

Shearling-lined gloves will be bulky and will typically have unsightly seams on the top of the hand, like this:

I would go for cashmere- or wool/blend- lined gloves for temperatures slightly below freezing, but I strongly recommend a pair of mittens for colder temperatures.
I like gloves that have ability to text with them on, but don’t use devices and am not out in the ultra cold temps bring mentioned. S has a pair of leather gloves for driving. H does as well.
I have a lot of the Lord and Taylor cashmere lined gloves and like them for dressier situations. But the gloves I always grabbed for warmth are the Ugg shearling gloves. They still look nice but are so much warmer. Something like this
The UGGS gloves for the win.
My only issue,.I don’t lose many things… but I DO lose gloves for some reason. I’m not sure I would buy $100 gloves for that reason. But those UGGS gloves look terrific!
