Enough wrestling over at the political election thread for now.

Was “Newman’s Own” sauces, salsas, dressing…etc any good ?

I never like Newman in his movies. He was always so cocky so I stayed away from merchandize bearing his lightness. Another reason: I bought a Sinatra’s own pasta sauce thinking the man’s got to have taste. That was the one and last bottle of Sinatra pasta sauce I bought. It was that bad. Yuck. I don’t the chairman went anywhere near that stuff. The same with Emeril spahgetti sauce. It made the signatra stuffs presentable even because Emeril’s was nothing more than tomatoe gravy! So far all the celebrity food brands were nothing but hype, nothing more than fading stars trying to cash it.

I really like one of his salad dressings. We have a local restaurant that does a very good salad with grilled chicken and fruit and pecans - they serve it with Newmans own Honey Mustard dressing - it is good. I have tried a couple of the other dressings and liked them also.

Drive through McDonalds and see for yourself - their salads use Newman’s dressings. They are additive free (MSG-free), a relative rarity in salad dressings.

I very much like several of the Newman’s Own salad dressings, particularly the Balsamic, Caesar, Sesame Ginger, and Raspberry Walnut varieties.

The pasta sauces I would describe as okay. The salsa is good, as is the coffee.

He was a great guy by all accounts. He and his wife, of course, are/were superb actors. I used to live in the vicinity of CT where they lived, and belonged to a church that they had frequented on occasion, and everyone I knew who had come in contact with them had great things to say.

I like his salad dressings and spaghetti sauce a lot. The popcorn, not so much. I love the idea behind it, with profits going to charities; the man behind it all will be missed.

Great stuff! I loved the Italian dressing when it first came out… and when was that? 25 or 30 years ago? I have since become very fond of making my own oil and vinegar dressing, but I think Newman’s is 2 cuts above the typical bottled dressing.

And as I mentioned in another thread, I actually have a jar of Newman’s peach salsa in my fridge right now. Checked the label. That’s how I want to remember Paul Newman; wearing a big handlebar moustache and a sombrero… My wife bought it by mistake (going for the regular salsa). It is pretty good… unusual for sure… but good.

I like peach or mango salsa- The stores here don’t always carry Newmans- & I like to make my own, but fruit salsa is good on fish tacos or grilled salmon.

Oooh - ginger - really? I love ginger. I will have to look for them. I am not sure i have seen Newman cookies round here though. Wow the things you discover on CC.

The Basamic Vinagrette is fantastic. It is the only thing I use when I don’t make the dressing from scratch. All the products I have tried are natural and don’t have strange chemical ingredients. I like the pasta sauces, cookies, popcorn, and candy. Preferably all at one meal.

As for Newman the man, anyone that does not get his extreme handsomeness and hotness is beyond hope. In addition, he was a good person. As Olive Oil would say. “What a man, what a man!!!”.

Oh yes. sniff sniff. Yesterday at the grocery store we all stood around the salad dressings and were sad for a moment. Then we all picked our favorite one. Some of my students, when they heard of his death on Friday said, oh wasn’t he the salad dressing guy? So sad that they missed his best work. I encouraged use of the video store.

I really like his salad dressings, particularly the light red wine vinegar dressing…H likes the light balsamic. The caesars are both good, the creamy and the oil and vinegar based. I do not mind paying what they cost, though they do go “on sale” periodically, for such good causes.

Fig Newmans are my favorite, too, mootmom! There’s a chocolate wafer cookie that’s also fantastic. The pasta sauce is very good, and the only salad dressing I don’t like is one that’s too lemony for me.

As for Newman himself, he kept his moral compass throughout his life–avoided Hollywood, raised a family, followed his passions, stood up for what he felt was right, and acted with compassion for other human beings. I liked the recent Vanity Fair article about him.

So I’ll be a devoted Newman’s Own customer for years to come!

Yes, the salad dressings are good. I use his Italian dressing as a marinade for grilled chicken when I’m too rushed or lazy to make my own. Always a winner.
