WasU and Emory rivalry

Why is Emory University and Washington University in Saint Louis considered rival schools? Why is there so much tension between the two schools.

Three months ago, I went to Washington University’s Olin Library to do some research. That day, I unwittingly put on an Emory t-shirt and went to Washinton University (WashU). When I was on the WashU campus, people kept giving me scathing looks. A lot of these people were looking at my shirt, which said “Emory University” in bold, bright colors.

Likewise, this April, I visited Emory University, and I kept seeing signs that said “beat the bears.” In case you don’t know, the mascot of Washington University is a bear. So, the statement “beat the bears” is a full on attack on Washington University.

I am curious as to what started the Emory and WashU rivalry. Does anyone know?

Furthermore, many people consider Emory and WashU to very similiar schools. Why is that? I personally think that the two schools are very different.

They are not similiar schools. I think that most Wash U students would agree, that there is no rivalry between the two schools. They are both really good schools, but geographically speaking—worlds apart in many ways.

I disagree.

When I visited Emory, the Emory students kept saying that WashU is their rival school. Every time that I said that I was considering WashU over Emory, someone would roll their eyes.

I saw a similiar animosity in WashU students. Therefore, I have sufficient grounds to conclude that the two schools are rivals.

I wonder where the rivalry started.

They are in the same sports conference and they are trying to build a rivalry to spice things up and build more school spirit…whether it will catch up-- is questionable.

see i always though emory and wash u were VERY similar… anyone care to explain the differences?

I think that the main differences are: Emory is located in a rich neighorbood, (most of WashU is located in University City; I live in University city and I can tell you that, overall, University City is not a rich neighorbood) WashU has a football team unlike emory, and WashU has an engineering school unlike emory.

The population, the endowment, the urban location, and student body is quite similiar.

I think Clayton which borders the southwest side of Wash U has some wealthy neighborhoods. The fact that Wash U has some city near by makes the school more interesting.

Clayton is a great neigborhood. (I’m a little shocked that it borders University City). However, Clayton does not compare to Druid Hills. Druid Hills is a spectacular neighborhood with beautiful scenery, low crime rates, and bountiful resources.

Besides, Clayton is a very commercial neighorbood. I go there all the time, and there’s too many businesses in Clayton and not enough houses. However, Druid Hills is mostly residential.

Both schools are second tier Ivy wannabe.

Emory funded by soft drink money and WUSTL on beer money.

Both are funded by beverage companies. Both are incredibly wealthy schools.

“Both schools are second tier Ivy wannabe.”

umm… no? They’re top tier actually… ranked above 50. And last year WashU was in the top 10, above some ivies.

WashU was ranked number 11 last year. Emory was ranked just a little bit below WashU. As for rankings, the two school are relatively commensurate.

One collegeis in the south, and one is in the midwest—worlds apart culturally speaking!

simple…it’s cuz wash u and emory are the top 2 division III schools

a little below? emory is barely ranked in the top 20th tier

:P academically, emory can’t beat WashU but the rivalry comes from sports as mentioned

University City has some kind of rich spots in it. The real rich people of Saint Louis live in Ladue (Borders UCity a little bit at the north part) Town & Country, Frontenac, Huntleigh and around those areas in West County.

I lived in Creve Couer my whole life :)

yeaaaaah west county! i love livin in town&country  you shoulda put creve coeur on that list too though :stuck_out_tongue:

anyway, there’s quite a variety when you look at all the different neighborhoods that border and include washu, especially if you include the CWE. Kinda nice that there are nice areas, but affordable and non-sketchy ones too.

I’m from good old St. Louis, I live in Frontenac and went to Ladue…Wash U is in an interesting location, it borders a nice area of St. Louis and then a not so great part. I am actually going to be going to Emory in the Fall and it seems like Emory is a lot more suburban and not as urban as Wash U. Both are great schools and it was a tough decision! Some points Emory has over Wash U I think (being a St. Louis native) are the weather and the city. St. Louis definitely isn’t as prosperous as Atlanta and also isn’t the sunny south…Wash U is ranked higher yes, due to crazy marketing…

my sister’s a soph at emory and im def applying to washu as my first choice this coming year.

hopefully, ill be able to experience that nerd rivalry first hand
