The cruelty of that woman (Lori Christensen) was unbelievable. I am glad they put her in jail.

Well this is a dreadful story. I don’t know anybody like this. I am suddenly very thankful for my neighborhood!
I do want to say if you (readers in general) have neighbors who home-school, you should know that in the younger years especially, good students rip through their school books at home and don’t need nearly the amount of school hours to get the same amount of work done. I have home-schooling friends who often take Fridays off for fear of finishing the books months early. Don’t assume the kids aren’t getting their work done. When a student doesn’t have to stand in line to go to lunch, nor raise his/her hand and ask permission to use the restroom, nor wait for the slower learners to understand a concept, he/she can get a lot of work done quickly. This gives them more time to play, take up Olympic level figure skating, or whatever.
I’m not saying that this is the situation here; I’m rather sure it’s not. But if you don’t know home-schoolers well and you think they are playing a lot on a school day, consider that they probably just have a very efficient learning system. I know they’d be happy to tell you all about it!

Yes, that can be true about home schooling. It would have been true for my son, but I felt he needed the social skills of public school. Still think I was right about him, but don’t judge others.

At 10:17? What timezone is she in?? I thought east coast.

Read the “Sociopath Next Door” by Martha Stout. It’s really entertaining and informative. It lends some insight into the “crazy” neighbor who you might not realize really is crazy.

Wow, wow, wow, you have my sympathies, living next to those, errrrr, “special” neighbors. :O

The only thing worse than a PK (preacher’s kid) is an MK (missionary’s kid).

I should know H is a PK, but our nephews are MKs.

Hoping to get back on topic… anyone else have horrible neighbor stories? My MIL had a neighbor who came to her yard, clipped a couple dozen tulips from the bed of tulips growing along the side of MIL’s house, then waved as she walked away. She barely knew MIL and never asked if she could have them!

Another poster watched a neighbor come pick stones out of her retaining wall, then carry them back to his house where he was building a wall. What was this guy thinking?

When we lived in a rural area, our gravel road was private. At the beginning of it was a horse barn that did boarding, they were not part of our “private neighborhood,” but for years riders had ridden our road as part of a lovely loop. We had a neighbor who literally seemed to go crazy, he became infuriated by anyone not part of the private group being on the road going so far as to speed at horses & people with no certainty as to who belonged and who did not.

One day he went to far and fired a gun shot in the air above some women riding, one of the riders was the county sheriff’s wife. Our neighbor left the county shortly thereafter, we did not know how he did it, but we all appreciated the sheriff convincing the neighbor to “git outta town”

My mother sneaks into her neighbor’s yard when she isn’t home to pull the weeds out. I’ve repeatedly reminded my mom that she’s trespassing, she would hate it if someone intruded on her yard, someone will see her and call the police or tell the neighbor, etc. She just says, “But the dandelion seeds will blow into MY yard!” Arrrrgh!

Nope, sorry…we want them. And there are two houses for sale on our street. We have excellent police and fire departments, excellent shopping and we welcome dogs. We are synagogue close (and yes there is a Catholic and Protestant church within walking distance).

Oh…and as for the dogs barking. Evil but effective: Record the dogs barking. And when they are quiet…play if back to them…at full volume. One of our friends (after numerous calls went unanswered) did this to people who locked their dogs out during the day. Dogs barked 10 hours straight. Neighbors came over screaming. They were handed the tape. Their dogs were inside after that…and the neighbors never talked to them again. Win/win.

^^ My husband’s college roommate did that exact thing. The dog across the street (of their college apt) was a real yapper. And he could yap for hours at a time. So, he finally went up to the dog and taped it. Then he set his stereo speakers in the front windows of the apt and blasted a tape of the dog.

It didn’t really solve the problem, but we all still laugh about it and the dog’s reaction of hearing himself barking (he went into an absolute barking frenzy).

. She just says, "But the dandelion seeds will blow into MY yard!

Your mom is doing a community service!

I was actually just about to mow the neighbors yard, before the new renters moved in. ( the owners live aways away)

Thank doG I have never lived in a place where lawn fanaticism was the norm. I would be ridden out of such a neighborhood on a rail! :D

My lawn has its fair share of crabgrass. We mow and fertilize, but don’t water. If it doesn’t rain and the grass dies, it always comes back… eventually.

But there is a house near the entrance of our neighborhood that has been owned by the same single woman since it was built 20 years ago. In 20 years, she has NEVER taken care of the yard. A few years ago she had a landscaping company come in and clean up the random weed-bushes that had grown up in the yard (and she had the house painted), and since then she’s had someone come once a year to cut down the weeds. But not yet this year - still waiting for the once-a-year cleanup. The weeds - including plenty of ragweed - are as tall as the mailbox. I have lost track of the number of people who have asked about “that house in your neighborhood that’s been in foreclosure forever.” Except it’s not in foreclosure - she just doesn’t do a n y t h i n g about the exterior of the house. We cannot figure out why she didn’t just buy a condo! There are several very nice townhouse complexes in our town that cost less than her house is worth. (And after 20 years, it’s worth twice what she paid for it - or it would be if it had any curb appeal at all). Our neighborhood is not a landscaper’s showcase, but people do generally at least mow the lawn and trim the bushes!

Can you borrow someone’s goat from a farm somewhere and let it wander down to her house for lunch??

This is pretty juvenile, but it cracked me up anyway:

I wonder if he had ever talked to them and asked them to turn it down?

And here I thought we were the bad neighbors, corrupting the neighborhood !

The only thing that happened in the last several days is that when my husband took our doggie for a walk after Rosh HaShanah services on Monday, our neighbor ran out of his house and yelled at my husband all about whether he appreciated the fact that his wife has ruined all of their lives…apparently neighbors are talking (it was in the local paper–I didn’t say anything to anyone else–but a lot of people saw the police cars, etc), their children are pariahs in their home school crowd, and they have mounting legal bills that they cannot afford–

All my H said was, “what the he–ll were the boys doing in that house ? If they hadn’t broken in to the house, you would not be having any problems…”

A neighbor told me that police search warrants of the boys’ houses found large amounts of cash, stolen goods and a lot of pills/prescription drugs. They are all in big trouble.

Boysx3, what your husband said was perfect. It has the added advantage of being the complete truth.
