Just trying to pack my clothes according to the climate in San Luis Obispo. What kind of weather should I expect? In New York it snows October through April, but will I need my winter coats at college? Or should I just pack for the heat? Thanks!

My son wears sweatshirts in the winter. A light rain jacket would be useful. You won’t need heavy jackets but bring one if you tend to get cold.

hahahaha you’re going to think you died and gone to heaven! Average temp in SLO year round is 73 degrees. It hardly ever rains and from what I’ve heard it doesn’t get very hot in the summer. There’s no air conditioning in the on-campus dorms and when I asked why they told me it doesn’t get hot enough in SLO to need air conditioning. I would leave your winter coats at home and just bring a few sweatshirts. And maybe an umbrella for those rare occasions when it does rain. My guess is that most of the year you will be wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Great isn’t it??

Depending on how outdoorsy you are, I would brig at least one ski jacket. In the winter, it might get cold enough to justify it at night on a few occasions. It really never gets cold enough for anything more than jeans and sweaters. However, my kid often wears a light Northface outer shell in the winter over his sweater. Bring light hiking boots for when it rains and if you like hiking the nearby hills and canyons.

Being from NY, your summers are much hotter and far more humid than SLO and your winters are bitter cold compared to this place. You will be in heaven. It can get a little chilly – but that’s all. One thing that you will be astonished by is that there are very few bugs compared to NY in the summer. No gnats, not many flies, hardly any mosquitoes. Leave the bug spray at home.

More importantly, make sure that you get a bike to get around campus and town. You will really need this to make it a great experience. If you are driving out here, throw a good used bike in the car with you if it fits. If not, get one here once you arrive.

Aside from the weird random super hot heat wave a couple years ago, and a few occasional monsoon rainy days, weather in slo is pretty consistent. Fall quarter is usally between 65-75 during the day and around the 50’s at night. Winter is a little colder, with highs of around 60-65 during the day and it may get into the 40s or even 30s at night sometimes. Spring usually warms up again and most days are in the 70s.

I doubt you’ll need your winter coat. People in California seem to think 40 or even 50 degrees is freezing, but as someone from the midwest, I’m fine in just a warm sweatshirt. I’d recommend bringing a lot of t-shirts and sweatshirts to wear over them. You don’t need to bring anything to warm, if it gets cold, just layer. Definitely bring stuff for the rain though. The amount of rain seems to vary each year, but between october and like april, there is a chance of there being some really rainy days.
