Weight Loss Buddy Check In

I think there are real benefits to a consistent Pilates practice that you’re seeing, mom60. Some of the exercises really target the obliques and that helps with the waistline.

I think Pilates sounds beneficial even if no weight/shape changes. Core strength is so important as we age.

Yesterady I went to a 30 minute abs class at my work fitness center during lunch. I went a few times last time I joined, and it is still soooo hard even though I am in better shape from diet and running. I had to modify lots of the exercise. However I figured that it was probably lots more benefit to me, just starting, than the folks that go all the time. Based on my soreness today, many of my muscles did get a workout with those modified moves!

166, eleven freaking (and no doubt stubborn) pounds from my goal of one hundred pounds lost. (That’s me over on the thread about being too old to wear leather, because I have no idea what to wear anymore - but that’s a topic for another thread.)

Did the Turkey Trot (at a fast walk) for the first time and wasn’t winded on the hilly course, thanks to my Peloton workouts. Off to celebrate with an hourlong endurance class! Asking Santa for Pilates classes for Christmas. @mom60 & the rest of you toned and lean Pilates devotées convinced me!

congrats!!!

I’m very lucky that my local YMCA offers quite a number of Pilates classes each week. There are 4 different instructors and they each have very different styles and approaches. For now I’m going to a Pilates with props with a teacher who explains each move carefully and is very big on the breath. @sabaray the exercises involving the obliques are extremely difficult for me but each time I find I am making progress. @colorado_mom - the ab class sounds great.
I’ve always had a weak core. Even when I weighed 100 lbs I had weak abs and a soft apple shaped belly. This is the strongest I’ve ever had my core in my life. I find I am drawn to the classes that are building strength right now. I’m still riding the bike but I know at some point I still have a lot of room for growth in increasing my cardio capacity.
A shock to me is how important my exercise routine has become. I am having a excision on my shoulder this coming week and I will have some stitches. I will have to not exercise for a period of time. I’m already thinking what exercises can I do that don’t involve using or lifting that arm.
I wish Santa would bring me a Peloton bike. Not happening since I don’t actually celebrate Christmas and I don’t see my H splurging on that for Chanukah.
@yauponredux - hope Santa brings the Pilates classes. Also wow on running the turkey trot. Congratulations. And huge congratulations on the large weight loss.

I love to hear about what people are doing for exercise. Pilates sounds like it would be so good…I think I need to look into it.

Thanks for all the support on my early wake-ups! I was on a little roll there. Unfortunately I got hit by a car on my way to work on my bike, 3 weeks ago, and that has halted all exercise. No serious injuries, fortunately, but still VERY sore. Today i walked a mile each way to the farmers market, and around the neighborhood on various errands, the most activity I’ve had since it happened. It felt good to be moving.

Weight loss since 7/5: 19
Lbs to goal: 14
Weight loss strategy: still working the WW and IF and loving the combination. It really feels like I can do this for life. I think that’s the difference between being young and being not so young. When I was younger, I only looked at the “diet” as a means to attaining a certain weight. Which is why it was always hard to maintain. Now I am looking for a way to eat that I can continue.

@GCmom How scary - so glad you were not seriously injured.

Thank you @yauponredux! Super scary but I feel like I’ve recovered emotionally. I’m pretty sure I’ll get back to biking as soon as I feel better physically.

Oh no, that’s AWFUL @GCmom !!! How frightening!

@GCmom - that is very scary. I’m glad you weren’t badly hurt.

Joined this thread in July with a 10 pound goal - just met that today. New goal is 5 more pounds by February - taking into consideration holiday parties and DS’s visit at the end of December. Dropping one pill and increasing another to prescribed dosage probably helped but I’ve exercised more and have been working hard on self control and portion control.

@Marilyn, how wonderful! Congrats!

I’m in a slump. The perfect storm of triggers are all coming together.
My routine is totally out the window. I had skin cancer surgery on my arm last week that made exercise forbidden for a period of time… We now add in a fire and terrible air quality making it advisable to stay inside. H is out of town which means I’m not making regular meals. This has added up to fixation with the news and eating. The last few days I’ve eaten toast at 10 pm (I normally never eat after dinner) and last night opened a package of good cookies that a friend gave me. Yesterday I ate the equivalent of 4 servings of the cookies over a few hours. My excuse on the toast was that the antibiotics that I’taking for my arm are making me nauseous.
I’m going to head south and drive till I get to some clear air. Hope to at least be able to take a walk somewhere. I also packed a lunch so I don’t eat junk.
I need to remind myself that I feel terrible today and that is partly due to eating the wrong foods.

@mom60, exercise is so good for your health, so it’s very important from that perspective. It is not, however, the main factor in weight loss-not by a long shot. It can never make up for a poor diet, so while your air quality is poor, you may well need to back off. But it shouldn’t derail your weight loss plan. What you can control for the moment is what you put in your mouth. I would seriously get the bread and cookies or other refined carbs out of your house so that they don’t tempt you. You can’t eat what you don’t have. Don’t let yourself get crazy hungry. Eat some healthy fats with your meals so that you feel satiated.

All of us get it. We’ve been there and done that. With both DH and I losing siblings in the last several weeks, I’ve noticed both of us sliding into unhealthy patterns. We talked about it last night and decided enough with the pity parties, it’s time to re-engage in our normal patterns and avoid the slide. There is nothing you can do about what you ate yesterday. Simply forgive yourself, go forwards with healthy eating, and try to create an environment that will help you stay on track. It’s no wonder you slid backwards just a bit, but put the brakes on now and you’ll be surprised how quickly you get back into a better pattern.

Hang in there.

Good advice, @Nrdsb4. @mom60, hope your perfect storm clears soon.

@Nrdsb4 - I’m sorry for your loss. You give some good advice.
I Know I will get back on track. Exercise and healthy choices are both equally important to me. We don’t normally have bread, cakes and cookies in our house.
I’m feeling better tonight. I was able to get out of the smoke for part of the day and it helped my mood. I might do the same tomorrow.

So much wisdom from those of you going some rough things. Be kind to yourself.
Hope for better days and fresher air, for you @mom60- winter solstice ( and 2018 ) soon here, good times to refresh and renew.

So I am enjoying all this holiday eating, but have also started to moderate my worse impulses, like just having one of those great cookies and not three.

Our pool is being repaired for the next three weeks. To compensate, I decided I would try different group fitness classes at the time I normally swim. So far so good. I am sore in all kinds of new places.

Ha, sore in all kinds of new places. I had that at after an abs class a few weeks ago. To others it probably looked like I wasn’t exercsiing anything (others have been doing this class for months or years and actually could do all the moves). I figured it meant I really needed it.

Up just a pound. I’m gonna try tracking food exercise again, with the idea I’ll only do so if I creep back up over the goal.

Last week on vacation in Southern California I walked an average of 6.3 miles per day!
