I agree that it is a touchy subject. People want to talk about dieting a lot but so many of them are misinformed about nutrition and losing weight, I try to keep my mouth shut to avoid trouble. I also think that some of the people who say that you shouldn’t lose any more weight may be a bit envious of you. It is best to be vague in your reply. And yes, i do think it’s crossing the line to ask a person their actual weight. Boundaries!

Thanks all. You’ve all reinforced my thoughts/feelings about all the personal questions. People have asked “how much have you lost” and a few that I’ve actually told have then said “I didn’t know you had that much to lose”. Well…ummm…apparently I did:)

Weighed this morning…down another pound. Hope I can keep this up!!

Early for my weekly weigh in (off on a weekend in Santa Barbara with my sibs)…half a pound down. I’ve definitely hit the plateau stage–after losing almost two pounds a week since June, I’ve lost 1 pound in two weeks.

Any plateau advice and encouragement? I’ve tried upping my walks from once a day to two times in one day a couple times a week and chasing after lobs that go over my partner’s head when I play tennis (instead of saying, “back up”), but so far nothing has helped.

I have 4 more pounds to go to meet my first goal and I’d really like to celebrate sooner rather than later!

Plateaus do happen. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Are you doing any weight bearing exercises? For me, a pair of 9 lb dumbbels did the magic trick - just 10-15 min of simple curls and lifts 3-4 times a week. I’m up to 15 lb ones and will stick with them. Pushups and planks work great, too.

Weighed in this AM. Back to my weight of last week. Must have got all the sodium out of my body from my weekend saltfest.
Ellemenope- bring a sweater. SB weather has been all over the place the last few weeks. This morning is clear but it has been cold and overcast lately. Some days the sun has not come out at all. Granted our idea of cold is not the same as the rest of the US. But being from San Diego your idea of cold is probably similar to mine.
Regarding reaching a plateau. Despite upping my exercise and watching my eating I was stuck at one weight for almost 3 months. Frustrating but about three weeks ago I weighed in and was down 3 lbs. I have stayed pretty consistent at the new weight for the last few weeks aside from my few days of water weight gain from eating out. I was beginning to think that my plateau weight was maybe just the weight my body wanted to be. Also even though I wasn’t losing lbs during that plateau I was getting firmer and continued to get compliments on my new body size.

I had reached a plateau about a year and a half ago. I just was stuck there and I decided that for whatever reason, I would never lose those last 3-5 pounds. I got braces and the weight just dropped off. I have maintained the new weight since January, and I honestly think this is where I will stay from now on. I am not recommending braces - although I am so happy I took the plunge - but the big difference is that I never eat anything between meals now. It is too much trouble to get out my tools and thoroughly pick, floss, brush, etc. I would have said that I didn’t snack much before, but I think I was snacking more than I realized. Healthy stuff, mostly, but snacking nonetheless.

Maybe some of you aren’t losing pounds, but you are losing inches???

To me, that’s even better!

You’re supposed to yell “yours!”; in the inaugural mixed doubles match of the Wimbledon Center Court sliding roof, Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf (they’re married to each other) played against Tim Henman and Kim Clijsters. When a lob went over Andre’s head, he yelled out: “yours, honey”.

Ellenmope - two pounds a week is excellent! And you’re still losing, just not at the same rate, so that’s not really even a plateau. After reading this article today, I think a slower weight loss is more likely to be successful, especially if it’s the result of lifetime lifestyle changes rather than dedicated dieting:

My initial goal was one pound a week, and it turns out I’m averaging 1.35 (not to get too exact). If I keep this up for a year I’ll be back at my wedding weight, which was an adult low, but I don’t expect to get there. Much as I enjoy fitting into old clothes, the best benefit is to my health. I’m sure the weight loss will eventually slow down or stop, and I know there are a lot more aggressive ideas that I can use, but for now whatever I’m doing seems to be working so I’m not tweaking it much.

I’ve now lost 5 pounds times 5, but expect a small plateau soon since it’s our anniversary today and we’re going out this weekend. I plan to eat rich, fattening food: [Deca wows chocolate fans with signature dessert,10-layer chocolate cake | abc7chicago.com](http://abclocal.go.com/wls/story?section=resources/lifestyle_community/food/restaurants&id=7740046) Note the complete lack of nutrition information!

I am so envious of you southern CA dwellers! That’s my dream for relocation, DH and I have spent years researching the country for places to go and San Diego seems to be the winner. But he keeps finding reasons why we can’t move yet…

Marilyn-Happy Anniversary! It is my anniversary today as well. We are going out tonight.

Marilyn,
I can’t remember where I read this but some studies have been done that show that a sluge meal every ten days or so can actually be good for your diet. Apparently it can kick start the weight loss by confusing your metabolism. Not sure if it is really true but that’s my story and I’m sticking with it.

This morning I went to an exercise class at 6 am that someone told me about. What she didn’t tell me was that it’s a “Boot Camp” class. And I was the only one who showed up so I got lots of attention and couldn’t hide at the back of the room! I have never sweated so much in my life! It was twenty seconds on and ten seconds off doing jump rope, planks, crunches, mountain climbs, weights, etc. The teacher told me that sweat is what happens when fat cries. Well, there was a lot of crying today!!!

Tomorrow I weigh in and see if these three heavy duty workouts this week made an impact.

Mom60 - and Happy Anniversary to you! I gave DH a break and told him he could watch the game tonight. Actually, the 7th game of the World Series was taking place during our wedding reception. My brother asked if he could bring a small portable TV and I said sure - the waiters kept stopping by to ask the score. We have a picture of him and my maid of honor at the head table watching the game!

EPTR - Sure, that makes sense - a good meal every couple of weeks - we’re telling our bodies “See, I’m not starving you, you don’t have to compensate by making me extra hungry and hanging onto fat!”

Not sure what word I meant when I wrote “sluge meal”. It’s been a long day.

^^Did you mean huge or sludge?

Splurge, maybe? Who knows!!

Well today’s weigh in was surprising and disappointing. The same as last week after really working hard at the gym and eating right all week. Bah!

Splurge seems most likely! I was wondering!

Today’s weigh in was same as last Friday. Given that on Monday I was up three or four pounds, I’m glad to be back where I belong. Halloween party this weekend won’t help, but I hope to have some projects out the door so that I can get some more intensive exercising back in the mix.

We bought 16 bales of pine needles to spread in our yard today. Hope I work off some calories in advance since we plan to go to our favorite pizza place Sat. night.
I have already told DH that we will not be ordering the big pizza and stuffing ourselves silly. We’ll have a salad and then a (good sized) slice each. No taking a bunch home and grazing on it for days.
I’m really glad DH is going along w/ my new healthy eating plan. He went to the gro. store with me yesterday and got rice cakes for snacks instead of cookies/chips…amazing. He’s lost about 15 pounds just because he has so eat what I cook for him!

Happy anniversary, Marilyn! Happy anniversary, mom60!

Speaking of plateaus and inches… My weight is still the same, has not changed a bit in more than a year, but my butt got a downgrade to size 40 in Burberry. The size 42 skirt became a bit too lose. It is still OK, but I have to wear a loose sweater over it to hide the imperfections in the fit. It is a good thing that the new skirt I recenty ordered was a 40. My skinny jeans that I wore with boots last fall are a bit loose in the waist, but are getting tight in the calves - probably, the result of my running.

Happy anniversary, Marilyn and mom60!
