Weight Loss for Dummies

OK BB what is a size 40 burberry in U.S. sizing???

Thumper, the label says it is a US 6, but I suspect it could be a* slightly older* version of 6, which is now a 2 (?) in many brands. So confusing!

How’s everyone’s weekend dining/exercising going?

I have a massive head cold which has dimmed my appetite considerably. Down two pounds since Friday morning.

The silver lining of sickness.

Ouch, EPTR! That is definitely not a good way to lose weight. You are probably dehydrated, too. Chicken soup and your favorite herbal tea with just a bit of honey. Hang in there.

Lots of snow here. DH and I pushed the snow around and romped with the dog. Then made a brunch: buttermilk pancakes, maple syrup from our friends’ Vermont maple trees, eggs over easy, sausage links, sliced South African oranges and Honeycrisps.

Every now and then it sure is nice to sit down to a real feast. DH is on the dreadmill now. I’m . . . doing this. Will try to exercise later.

Planning a saintly vegetarian dinner.

I have some size 40s from the last two years, Narciso Rodriguez and Prada, hanging in my closet. And I had to let the Prada out in the ribcage about 1/2 inch, so I could, you know, breathe. I am a 4 in pants, and a 6 in shirts, for places like J. Crew.

Ahhh… Brunch. Just made myself a nice one, too. Reheated 2 of the NY Times chanterelle stuffing muffins in a pan and supplemented them with 2 sunny side up eggs, watermelon wedges and coffee. I’m stuffed. H is heading out to dinner with some coworkers/clients mix. I’m sure they will be eating well, since they are in the culinary capital of the world!

Alumother: I think we are size twins.

Watermelon?
We had chanterelles & eggs with potatoes from the garden for dinner last night-I am waiting for my oak to grow my own little patch- I had to get these from the grocery.

I love having this thread to come to. I haven’t really lost a lot of weight since I started it but my body shape has changed for the better, I feel stronger and have a lot more energy. I also find that food doesn’t hold a great deal of power over me anymore.

This thread will be invaluable as the weather gets colder. Here in the northeast we had our first taste of winter and with it comes the temptation to just hunker down and eat! I am pleased to say that despite the many, many trees strewn across the road, my racewalking buddy and I cranked out our 4 miles at a very nice pace. The sun was glorious and we enjoyed the day.

While the rest of you are getting colder we had our first sunny weekend in months! Elemnope brought sunshine with her. This weekend we actually had SUN.
D had her end of the season horse show. They start each morning with donuts and bagels. I ate my oatmeal at home. I also passed up the free halloween candy. I was even able to pass on the free pizza dinner. I considered taking a piece and thought is it worth it? Made myself some eggs when I got home.

Mom60, your will power is admirable! I will think of you the next time there is a free donut or slice of pizza being offered.

Out of curiosity, I went back to the beginning of the thread. There were a lot of other posters who joined the thread and then…faded away. I wonder how they are doing and I wish they would come back. Those of us that are hanging in have had so much success might inspire them to try again.

There were also a lot of good tips that I had forgotten so it was nice to review!

EPTR-the pizza was from Costco. Prior to this thread I would have had a piece. It was dinner time and it was free. Now I look at it and ask myself do I really want it and is it worth the splurge. Costco pizza did not pass the test.
My friend calls it mindfullness eating.

Gorgeous, just gorgeous, weather in Santa Barbara this past weekend! I’ve had my “sluge” weekend–will drive home and get back on schedule today.

I haven’t started weight bearing exercises yet. But I have been researching it after reading so much about them here on this thread. That’s the next step. I tried the plank and thought that stick arms would snap…

ellemenope- thank you for the amazing weekend weather. The fog is back this morning.

Costco pizza can be good, but no matter how you slice it/cut it, it’s likely a HUGE piece!

IMO, everytime you say “no” to a splurge food, it makes it easier the next time you say no.

“I also find that food doesn’t hold a great deal of power over me anymore”

EPTR, that was a fascinating statement and I’ve been thinking about it since yesterday. By most accounts I am managing my relationship with food very successfully - having lost some weight and then maintained the loss for three years - but food definitely has power over me. I wish it didn’t.

I rejoined the gym yesterday- which makes me feel very virtuous- & I know that aerobic exercise will help cut down my winter appetite, but I noticed that they added a lot more mirrors around the rooms- I don’t know if I like that idea- I like to see that I am holding the correct position, but something about fluorescent lights & spandex just isn’t pretty.

Delighted to find that after my “sluge” weekend I ended up losing a trace - I was really surprised but guess I didn’t actually eat as much as I thought. Or at least ate less carbs - I did have two rolls with butter to start, then finished my foie gras en brioche, but didn’t eat any of the duck prosciutto flat bread, and only half my pumpkin gnocchi, and one-third of the 10 layer chocolate cake. Plus half the bottle of Reisling and one after dinner drink. Then yesterday I finished the flatbread and gnocchi, and another third of the cake. But no more wine!

I have been reading a lot about the health benefits of a glass of alcohol every day or so and I’m drinking a small glass of wine every couple of days. I’m hoping it will help raise my HDL - the rest of my cholesterol is fine.

So maybe this lifestyle change really sticks even through splurge times!

Also, I found a plank exercise on my Wii Fit! It’s under Weight Training and I tried it out - basically you put your forearms on the board then straighten out your legs and hold for 30 seconds. I can’t hold a straight arm plank, but on forearms I can hold for 10 seconds then drop to my knees then back out straight for the last few seconds. The first two times I didn’t keep my weight on my arms and my “trainer” said, “I noticed you took a break” and “I noticed you didn’t hold for the entire time.” Nosy trainer .

^^^
Really! Thanks for pointing that out, Trainer! Like you didn’t know that you took a break. Lol.

Puzzled,
I know how you feel about food having a hold on you. I’m not really sure why this attempt at weight loss feels different from other attempts in the past, but I do think that losing a lot of the bad carbs in my diet changed my appetite for the better. I’m not ravenous anymore and I don’t feel deprived. I also don’t reward myself with food. And…if I want a treat, I have one, no apologies. While I have only lost a few pounds in a few months, I’m happy with this and within a year I will have reached my goal without feeling punished. I’m convinced that having this thread to come to has been a huge help to me. Everyday, I think of something that I want to report and when i fell off the wagon a few months ago and almost threw in the towel (again!), the people here helped me to stick with it.
