Weight Loss for Dummies

Well thats a no-brainer, longprime. Get her a set of choppers!!! Then she will weigh more than 75 lbs!!

And SERIOUS congrats CD!! Way to go!!!

^^^LP, my grandfather and grandmother used to go dancing (not dance aerobics, just real dancing) at ***least ***3 times a week until he got absolutely too sick with cancer to continue. But he was dancing before that through chemo and all the other horrible treatments. I believe that is what kept him alive for so long. When they were well, they were something to behold, even to us younger folks.

Grandma lived 18 years longer and danced several nights a week at the “lodge” until about 3 months before she died at age 96!

That’s like the dance aerobics class at the YMCA. All women, packed in a room with glass and mirrors. Husbands are hitting the weights, in the basketball courts, doing the aerobic machines, etc.

One of my kids contradances. Has built up some NICE shoulders from all that lifting and dipping and spinning, not to mention he has met a lot of nice young women!

I am up a couple.
Home electronic scale says one number. The gym says another.
My problem is that I try to give mom high starch and fat foods. She doesn’t eat it, then I eat it. And if I take her out to buffet, she eats a lot. I eat too.

150 women, 125 of them apparently then go out and have a cola and fries. :(

They’d be better off with bacon and eggs.

That isnt very nice, Longprime. Should we say men exercise and then go out for beer and burrritos? Probably more likely.

Same weight as last week. I’m going to log my weight on Wednesdays from now on.

Back to 2 days ago weight, with a walk and being careful yesterday. As I walked by our local community center and read the announcement board, I thought, "I wonder if they would let me join “Zumba for seniors”? ;)

Update!

Starting weight: 177.8

Current weight: 156.4

Total loss: 21.4 lbs

Today, for the first time, I felt like an athlete during my workout. I feel a lot stronger mentally too. I also didn’t recognize myself in a mirror I walked past in Walmart.

I am going shopping in a couple weeks to get an outfit for senior night. I will get paraded front and center in the gym and introduced during Halftime at the boys basketball game with my cheerleader daughter. Makes me nervous but I couldn’t imagine having to do it when I was 180 lbs.

Hope all is well with everyone. I am really ramping up my running sessions.

MSPearl, that is awesome! I have senior night coming up as well, and I’ll be wearing a long coat to cover my behind! You are inspiring…and I wish I liked to run. But I’ll do a good walk today instead! Congrats!

mspearl- Enjoy senior night. Always bittersweet. I am impressed you can achieve so much during senior year. This time last year I was a basket case and constantly reaching for a glass of wine.

SJTH- you and I seem to be facing the same challenges. I am still holding at 5 pounds and getting frustrated. I have been sticking to my calorie allowance and walking 30-40 mins daily and haven’t had a net loss in 10 days. Wondering if I need to add a different form of excercise. Anyone try the Curves program?

Gibson1514, Are you walking at a fast pace? Take shorter strides and quicken your pace. Move your arms when you walk as if you were running. If you’re already doing all that then lengthen your distance. It takes about an hour to walk three miles at a pretty good pace. You could also do some simple exercises at home…push-ups,planks,etc…use some small weights for arms/ab workouts. If you don’t want to buy weights, laundry detergent bottle work great! Turn on some music and dance vigorously to an entire song without stopping. It’s fun and you’ll be surprised at how hard your heart is pumping at the end!

I had a friend who tried Curves and lost a little weight. The problem was when she stopped Curves the weight came back because she didn’t have any other exercise routine. So unless you plan to do a program like Curves indefinitely, the better option is to keep working toward effective exercise that you can sustain on your own for the long term.

Thanks PackMom! I am going to be dancing my heart out tomorrow morning!

Up two pounds from last week’s weigh in, but in the interim, I went on a wonderful vacation that included eating great seafood in Monterrey. Well worth it…but I’m glad to be getting back to my routine…

It sounds like a lot of us are either stuck or gained a few back.

Although…Mspearl!!! Awesome! Every mom in that gym will want to be you on senior night. Good for you!

I am up two pounds and getting discouraged. I will admit I haven’t been very good lately about the carbs. I also don’t track my intake and I think I need to start that. It just seems so cumbersome!!! And time consuming! Any tips on making it doable for the lazy ones like me?

Well I’m off to my first Barre fitness class! I’ll let you know how it is!

College boy #2 is on a plane back to Ohio, so I can make as much noise exercising in the a.m. as I want starting Monday. Yay. Dance sounds fun. Because I was desperate yesterday, I found a 10 min workout on On Demand that was pretty fun and good cardio. At least I felt that it did SOMETHING before my busy day. Son did ask what the pounding noise was…but he’s gone now! Down .5 this morning, so 5.5 in one month. That’s great, but this is the point at which I usually falter. I need to be strong and keep going.

SJTH

Keep coming to this thread when you feel like you are falling off the wagon. We all have a fitness history and mine has always been that I start watching my health, calories, exercise and a few months later, I falter and give up. This thread has kept me on track since June (I think that’s when we started?). Not that it has been a perfect decline in weight and incline in muscle and strength but I am probably in better shape than I have been since before I had kids. The posters here have been so much help, inspiration and validation for me. Not to mention the humor!
We’re here for you!

PS. Loved the Barre class. I felt like a ■■■■■ trying to stretch out those muscles but it will get easier. Tomorrow is Pilates. I find that I have to acknowledge a significant amount of fitness ADHD. If I mix it up and do different things, I enjoy it more.

EPTR- is it a pure barre class? I googled and found a studio 5 mins from my house. I grew up taking ballet classes till I was 17. Think I would enjoy this… but I am scared of how out of shape I am!
