Weight Loss for Dummies

Sending this message from the gym!

Thank you, thank you EPTR! Had a date night last night and was pretty good–cocktail and wine, but fish and veggies for dinner!

Gibson,
I guess the Barre class could be described as a hybrid of pilates and ballet. We did a lot of floor work that was much like a pilates class. We used a small soft ball for some of the exercises. Then we went to the bar and did some stuff that was based in ballet. Plie squats. arabesque, etc but with endurance built in and lots of reps. I was sweating by the end. We ended back on the floor doing stretches and cool down. The claim to fame is that it is supposed to give you long strong muscles. We shall see!

Glad to see that Jym is at the Gym :)

I’m off to the gym now. Really! I think . . .

I haven’t been posting on the thread lately because no news is no news. Been maintaining within about a 2 pound range ever since we arrived in San Diego. Finally this morning nudged below my lowest weight so maybe will start going down again. All things considered it’s good to know that I can maintain, although it’s mostly due to all the walking I’m doing out here. Too boring to walk the same old same old at home. Here, however…on Saturday we took the beach half the way to the farmer’s market, pretty seaside streets the rest of the mile. Then one mile back. Yesterday I strolled half a mile down the beach and back. So I’m able to keep from gaining even though I’m indulging some.

Marilyn- sounds like you are enjoying your Ca extended vacation. Maintaining is good.

Made it out of Whole Foods today without picking up a vegan brownie nor any other sweet item.

I don’t think just doing aerobic exercise is enough. You really need to do some strength exercises for the core (like those dreaded planks) and some weightbearing exercises such as stuff with dumbbells and kettle balls. Here’s the kettleball routine idad put together for me: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/13682303-post14398.html</a> For more dumbbell oriented stuff I like http://www.amazon.com/New-Rules-Lifting-Abs-Myth-Busting/dp/1583334130</a> . I’ve never done Curves.

mom60 – I know exactly what you are talking about. I stop by Whole Foods a lot – it is on my way to my daughter’s school – and in the past, I’ve always picked up a brownie, a baklava, or something sweet on my way to the checkout, but the last couple of times I was able to NOT do that. Small victories. . .

I have a goal of being able to do boy’s style push ups sometime this year. I simply cannot do them.

I have to tell you- I am not counting calories at all … I am just avoiding carbs (rice, pasta, potatoes, bread) and “most” sugars. Eating limited fruits, with only a very occasional sweet treat. My exercise is very, very minimal and sporadic. I have lost 40 pounds and kept it off now for over six months. First thing I’ve done that has worked - and frankly - has been relatively easy once you get your mindset.

Wow mathmom. I watched those videos. Do you do those exercises?

I have incorporated some weights and planks and a balance ball into a routine that takes about 40 minutes (includes a 10 minute jog). I took a routine from an app that I downloaded and substituted exercises to compensate for exercise equipment that I don’t own.

Played fabulous tennis today and everyone patted me on the back for losing weight. To motivate myself, I bought some new tennis clothes in a size that requires losing a little more weight in order to look primo.

We all have our ways to motivate…

I sure do! The single leg dead lift is surprisingly hard. My kettleball (15 lb) is a little heavy for the arm press. My favorite kettle ball exercise though is the swing - it’s fun: [Kettlebell swing instruction - YouTube](<a href=“Kettlebell swing instruction - YouTube”>Kettlebell swing instruction - YouTube)

The single leg dead lift looked crazy hard and the goblet squat? I don’t think I could get down into the full squat position…

Such interesting reading here. I started Atkins a couple of weeks ago in an effort to get my blood sugar under control and I’m doing great in that area. I haven’t gotten on a scale, one thing at a time, and blood sugar is more important right now.

I have cut out practically all carbs though, except for those that are naturally in vegetables. I have to say I’m really not suffering and I feel great.

I do a “goblet squat” sometimes…but it involves wine and wiping up a drip or two…

^lol, sjth!

Alert the media: I’m down 6 lbs on my way to 21!!! Please let me keep going, pretty please?

Great SJTH!!

Today was weigh in day…I like Wednesdays a LOT better than Tuesdays. Still the same weight as last week…which is my goal. And the skinny jeans still fit.

TryoIng to get back on the bandwagon! Weight is fine but I think I’ve been a little too friendly with the carbs - just feeling a little mid body bloated. Back to some low carb meals and snacks! Found a good board to follow on pinterest with some new low carb options - will be checking that out!

I’m not that good at squats either, but I think they are worth doing. When you are old you’ll want to be able to squat enough to use a toilet. :)
