Weight Loss for Dummies

EPTR keep us posted
I suffer from ongoing bursitis in my hips. No matter what I do I can’t seem to get rid of it for long. I have tried injections, PT, chiropractic, massage etc. I have not tried the above product but it might be worth a shot. What helps somewhat is rolling on a foam roller and also using a baseball against the wall and rolling on my hips and lower back. Also use the baseball to release my psoas muscle.
Today I am going to attempt to play tennis. Between ailments, weather and jury duty I have not played in 3 1/2 months.
ellemenope- couldn’t we all use a new shape. Anyone else notice that their wrinkles seem worse now that they have lost some weight in their face?
Marilyn- sounds like you had a wonderful Ca vacation. Did you do any travel outside of the San Diego area?

Mom60. I have bursitis in my right hip too! This was a big part of the problem in my weight gain. The pain was so severe I had a hard time walking and bearing weight. The pain subsided after a cortisone shot. It is now manageable. I guess I am now used to my right hip being sore. I try to sleep on my left side- but it is more natural for me to sleep on the right. I also think my yoga glass has helped.

Marilyn- you are inspirational! I am impressed you managed to continue your weight loss on your trip.We have 3 years till D2 leaves the nest ( as long as D1 doesn’t come back) and we are already planning on spending a month or so at the beach in the winter. Both H and I can work from home.

EPTR- how are you feeling today? Is the neck pain still improved?

GREAT job, Marilyn! You’ll be fitting into your new CA bikini in no time…

Mom60–definitely noticing the wrinkles. I thought that I didn’t have wrinkles (Asian skin)–turns out that I had wrinkles that were being stretched smooth by face fat! The worst place is right under my chin. Getting a real “turkey” look to my neck…is plastic surgery the only cure for that?

My neck is still greatly improved today. I did the ball technique last night again. Although, I also started taking fish oil on the same night that I started using the miracle ball. Would fish oil be effective that quickly, though?

I sympathize with all of the others who have painful joints or chronic pain issues. I think I have gotten used to always having a stiff neck. Part of the problem is that I sleep on my side and stomach and that is the worst thing you can do for your neck. I have tried to break the habit but I can’t. I think I need a massage table with the face hole thingy so that I can lie on my stomach and not need to turn my head to the side. Wow, if I could get a masseuse to go with it I could drift off to a heavenly. painless sleep every night!

Oh, and Ellenmope! Turkey neck appearing here too! It’s awesome.

Great news EPTR. Have you ever tried sleeping on a memory foam contour pillow ? …great neck support. DH doesn’t have neck problems but the contour pillow has been nothing short of a miracle for reducing his snoring.

Marilyn have you ever shopped footsmart.com
They have lots of shoes for problem feet.

Thanks all - it hit a high of 67 today in Chicagoland and I walked to the post office, about 3/4 mile each way. Further than the walk to the post office in Del Mar! But after 25 years in this town, it was pretty boring except to see what stores moved around, closed, and opened in town. Somehow waves are more enjoyable than houses for me.

mom60 - our furthest excursion was to San Clemente; much more attractive waterfront than I had expected - and I got to walk my fourth pier (after Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, and Oceanside). Piers are also more interesting than suburban streets! We have vacationed around much of California in the past. (And of course the drive out and back. Here’s what I posted on Facebook re our return trip: Two days ago we saw the ocean. Yesterday we saw the desert. Today we saw the mountains. Tomorrow we see…Iowa.)

PackMom - interesting website but I don’t think I would ever buy shoes I hadn’t tried on, even if the shipping was free, which doesn’t seem to be the case.

I used to have some strong hip pain several years ago; hurt standing, sitting, lying down. My doctor sent me PT. At which point I learned not to sit sideways at the computer with my legs crossed. Hard to remember to sit straight with both feet on the floor, but it was a lifesaver. So what EPTR says about posture adjustment using the ball may be a clue to some kinds of pain (obviously not bursitis) - making sure that everyday habits are not causing us to inadvertently strain ourselves.

Well, this is my third pain free morning after my third session with the “miracle ball”. (I laugh every time I write that. I am an elementary teacher and if I use the word “ball” in any context, I get giggling children. The other day I had an urge to say “I am talking about a ball of clay. If I meant a part of your body I would have said testicle”. Good thing I kept that thought to myself.)

I tried a memory foam pillow for my neck and it was worse than useless.

But the memory ball sounds wonderful!

EPTR–this is why I could never be a teacher (except to adults). No filter on my tongue.

I still chuckle when I think back to a second grade class…
We were doing a science project (weather) and the teacher asked “what makes dew?” A voice from the back of the class said “dogs”.
Potty humor, but I still smile…

Yes, potty humor is still very much alive!

Mommusic, it’s a Miracle BALL, not memory BALL!!! Get your balls straight, young lady.

I tried a memory foam pillow once and hated it. It gave me the creeps, the way my head got stuck in it. I did buy a pillow at Bed Bath and Beyond that is supposed to be for side sleepers. It is shaped like a candy cane. It has helped a bit as it seems to keep my head level with my shoulder instead of at an angle. Anyway, I really enjoy the exercises with this little miracle ball. They feel good and it has helped me to relax before bed.

Back to the topic…weigh in today…same as last week. Whew.

Thumper, I’m officially down 8.5 lbs! While I’m thrilled, it really, truly means that exercise is the key. sigh.

EPTR, glad your balls are working, yuck, yuck.

Just to get us off page 4…

Today I went to TJ Maxx just for fun (no, not to get a purse) and ended up buying two tops and a pair of white jeans. It was so exciting to try on clothes that fit and looked good; size L tops (Calvin Klein) instead of 1X, and size 14 jeans (Ralph Lauren) instead of 20W. I did a little dance in the dressing room :p.

Now I’m inspired to head over to Kohl’s with my 30% coupon; this could get dangerous (and expensive). But I am running out of old clothes to shrink into, and the tops at least should fit me indefinitely.

I am convinced that the very last 5 pounds I lose will be off my abdomen. So no bikinis, ellenmope! :o Nonetheless, I can report that loose skin does tighten up over the months; no more tummy dewlaps.

Marilyn, thats such great news: Plus, clothes that FIT make you look slimmer too! Enjoy!

Don’t buy too many on the way down. It’s not fun buying clothes and then donating them a few months later.

Go Marilyn!

I bought new shorts early last spring after losing about 20 lbs. I kept losing and they were all too big by mid summer. Lesson learned…Since then I’ve bought the lion’s share of various sized clothing for my new smaller size wardrobe from Goodwill. In the next few months I’ll need to get a new swimsuit  I’ve worn only skirted ones for many years. I’m hoping to be able to give that style up this year. The wrinkly loose skin on my thighs tells me maybe not. We’ll see.

Hey everyone, just checking in. I’ve been MIA for this past week due first to the distraction of taking D to her last college audition of the year, then the roller coaster of emotions as the results came very quickly (bottom line: she’s wait listed).

Anyway, with all of that I’ve had a bit of a tough time managing my eating and one day I gave up completely and didn’t even bother to track. (I went back the next day and tried to re-create it as best I could but it’s hard with a lot of restaurant food and I got lazy)

The one good thing I did was last Friday I made up my mind that I’m going to start the C25k program. (Couch to 5K) I’ve been walking almost every day since December 31 so I figured it was time to start moving a bit more. I did the first day last Friday and planned to try to do the 2nd day on our trip but it didn’t happen. In fact I was SO SORE from the first day I could barely get out of bed every morning! It was Monday before I felt halfway normal again!. So I did day 2 on Tuesday and found it went a LOT easier. I wasn’t sore the next day, either.

Today was my weigh-in day and I was absolutely SHOCKED that I was DOWN 2.6 pounds for a total of 17.8 since December 9!!! I still can’t believe it! That’s only .2 away from my 10% goal which was my goal for March!! I’m so excited!

So I did day 3 today and I found that the running sections were WAY easier than they had been before and although i was tired afterward, I wasn’t completely drained. I feel really good and can’t wait to move to week 2 on Monday. Now that most of the crazy college visits are done until April I’m hoping to settle into a MWF routine.

I have to admit I’m a little nervous with such a big loss this week that my body will self-correct and I’ll have a gain next week. But I’m still down almost 18 pounds from where I was and I’m down from a size 16 to a size 12 (fortunately I never got rid of those 12’s so I don’t have to buy anything new!) that’s all that matters!

Tracyvp, that’s fantastic! Good for you! Isn’t it nice when things become a little easier and your body gets stronger? I am noticing that my flexibility seems to be returning a bit and I definitely feel stronger than I did 6 months ago.

Keep us posted! Where do you get the C25k program?

I don’t know if this violates the TOS. It’s not a social networking site. Anyway, the info is here:

I also downloaded C25K app from Zen Labs for my ipod touch that tells me when to start walking, running, cool down, etc. It runs in the background so you can still listen to your music or podcasts or books or whatever.
