Weight Loss for Dummies

Ok. Two more colleges to hear from for my son: and I have a goal to walk every day this week and be back on track diet-wise! I have 12 lbs to lose before June 1st!!!

I am quite discouraged. I joined Weight Watchers a week ago Saturday. My starting weight was my highest ever (including full term pregnancies with large babies). I followed the plan perfectly; I made wise food choices, only used a handful of the weekly extra points, and I exercised. At the second meeting, I WAS EXACTLY THE SAME WEIGHT! Other people at the meeting after their first full week were down 1.6 - 6 pounds! The gal encouraged me to give it another week; sometimes people have a stutter start. I will, but I am asking myself how it is possible that such a positive and significant change in eating/drinking could lead to zero result (it’s not a “time of the month” issue either).

Stay with it momof2kids! Think long term. My experience is that you need the desire AND the right plan. Then you will have success. If Weight Watchers doesn’t work for you, then you move on to the next plan. Be sure to report here after your next weigh in. Peer support is important.

I have never done WW…perhaps you need to track more closely what you eat. I weigh my food and track my calories and fitness activities online on My Plate.

I am trying to create a lifestyle of eating. I am seeing a nutritionist, and am currently detoxing from the low carb thing. didnt realize how crabby I would be.I asked the nutritionist how we can crave such things like chocolate and salt that arent good for us. She said in studies , the areas that lit up with heroin were the same one that lit up with sugar fat and salt. I was stressed last week so decided to take the time for me, worked out a lot. I feel better. not weighing right now just changing and tweaking what works for me. I am reading a book called “the lean” a little drastic but interesting. Oh yeah that needing to gain two pounds would work for me for about 30 minutes! Done!

momof2kids - I lost over 30 lbs. on WW a few years ago and have kept it off. When I started the program my weight loss was extremely slow. After a month or so, the person who was weighing us in (not the group leader) suggested that I go to the absolute minimum point allowance, which at that time was 18 pts., and see what happened. I did that and started to lose steadily. I stayed at that level until I reached maintenance. Perhaps if you still don’t lose after another week, you might try going to a lower point level. And you might also limit yourself to just a few “free” fruits. Good luck!

momof2kids - how frustrating! BUT, keep with it. How do you feel? Regardless of the weight loss, if you are improving your diet focus on the health benefit.

I weigh myself daily ( can’t help it) I have notice can swing a pound or so easily. Maybe you had something salty the day before weigh in and are retaining water.

Like ellenmenope I track calories with myplate- it works for me and is FREE!

I often hear people say they don’t have “time” to go on a diet, or start a diet. I don’t understand this at all. When I am short of time I don’t have time to eat either. Lunch on my really busy days (rehearsals straight through, car travel to and from jobs) might be a piece of cheese, some crackers, a piece of fruit, and a cup of milk or juice box. That’s not very much for an active person.

Maybe people with no “time” resort to fast food? I know that can pile up the calories quickly, but I just can’t eat that way.

And BunsenBurner–you are wise to stay away. Some people here might track you down and attack you with forks!

It could be water or other weight. In general, you don’t lose 6 pounds in one week unless you are truly huge. I consider two pounds per week to be an aggressive goal.

If you eat fewer calories than you burn, you will lose weight. But the idea is that it is a lifestyle change and it can take time. It most likely took a lot of time to gain weight and it takes time to lose it in a healthy way.

When it comes to weighing myself, I do the same ritual to try to minimize fluctuations that might occur throughout the day. I weigh myself on Friday morning, so I don’t take anything by mouth starting at 10 pm on Thursday night, get up on Friday morning, use the bathroom, take every stitch of clothes off (including my watch) and then step on the scale.

You need to compare apples to apples…

Thanks for the encouragement. I am tracking everything I eat on the WW e-tools. It is amazing how being accountable to do so really makes me consider what I select. I do feel that I ate much healthier last week than in the past, which is a plus regardless of the number on the scale. Perhaps it is water weight or perhaps my metabolism/hormones/age are such that I will have to work harder than others in the meetings. I will stick with it. I guess I had my expectations set too high.
I think there may be some trouble with the sugar part of my diet. I am eating a lot of fruit all of which has natural sugar and I am not totally weaned off soda yet (but am getting close). Maybe, I’ll try more veggies/less fruit. I should be totally off soda by Easter. Hopefully, I will have better news next weigh in. And, I shall work on my patience!

BunsenBurner
I’ll happily donate a few pounds.
I am getting back withthe program and getting serious about losing weight. I lost a bit but found it again, and I had a rude awakening when I tried on some clothes the other day.

So I started tracking on Livestrong again. I have a question- I ate a lean cuisine lunch that isnt on their list. If I manually add my lunch, it looks like all I can add is calories. Is there any way to add a meal to their list? How does it become “verified”?

My friend started WW and has had sucess, but she says that although most fruits are free, you need to limit them, and focus more on veggies. I used to be able to lose weight more easily but find I now have to limit the carbs. She doesnt use the extra points much.

Oh yeah…that’s a killer. But it sounds like you are on the right track. Fruit-wise, I find that strawberries, blackberries, blueberries and raspberries are a lot fewer calories than an apple or a pear.

jym - thanks!!! I just added to the “Worst thing on the menu…” thread. So much for my pleasant lunchtime reading. DO NOT look at that thread! Or do, if you want to skip a meal or two. :)

I have done weight watchers a few times and it worked well for me when i was younger but I found it was not the right way for me to lose weight as I got older. Part of that was that they changed the plan a lot and I found it difficult to get going with the weight loss at the beginning of my membership. I really think that you need to totally skip the bonus points if you want to lose in the beginning. I would also limit the fruit a lot! And if you eat it, stick to berries over apples, pears and bananas.

As we age our metabolism slows and it is harder getting off the starting block. I have found that you gain momentum as time goes by and you ramp up the exercise, too.

Your metabolism speeds up as you gain muscle and it’s cumulative. As your metabolism goes up, you body burns more calories per day - you just have to ensure that you don’t fully compensate for the increased burn.

Well, on day 3 of the “its time to get serious” remodeling of my eating patterns. Have documented everything in livestrong since Sunday and the first few pounds have fallen off. Sure, its probably water weight, but thats fine with me. I still have about 15# to go to reach my goal. At least I am getting into the mindset with the rest of you.

I am sneaking in and whispering this very quietly - I have lost 14 pounds.

whoop,whoop eddieodessa!
I somehow gained two pounds over the last few days. We were out of town for the weekend but didn’t indulge in any forbidden foods and have been exercising this week. Walked three miles yesterday and will run it today (as I did on Sunday). I’m hoping it’s a monthly thing.

We were in the car for five hours on Thurs. and then five hours back home on Sunday. Is it possible that so much sitting for long periods in the car can bring on some sort of water weight gain? Seems like I notice I’m up a pound or so after long car trips.

How long did it take to lose it, eddie? Congrats!!!
