Weight Loss for Dummies

I have been doing the Atkins induction phase for a few weeks. I have been pounding the protein-- striving for 100-150g a day.

What is the current thought on protein consumption? Too much leads to weight loss stall? How do I find out what the recommended level is, because trying to up the protein has been a chore and I certainly don’t want to do it if it is counterproductive!

Thanks.

I think too much of anything is bad for you: [url=<a href=“http://www.daveywaveyfitness.com/nutrition/8-side-effects-of-too-much-protein/]8”>http://www.daveywaveyfitness.com/nutrition/8-side-effects-of-too-much-protein/]8 Side Effects of Too Much Protein. | Davey Wavey Fitness/url

Found a new yogurt at the grocery store yesterday…Dannon Light & Fit–Carb and Sugar Control. 3 grams of carbs (instead of in the teens) for those of you who are watching those carbs.

snowflake and cjr,
One trick with Atkins or low carb is to eat at least every fours hours, and have smaller meals/snacks, each with PROTEIN. Say: small bfast, then snack (protein), then sm/med lunch, then snack (protein!), then sm/med dinner. (I use a baby bels, nuts, HB egg, that sort of thing for a snack, and there are low carb hi protein bars at Walgreens in a pinch).
You won’t get so hungry if you keep a little protein in your system throughout the day, less likely to eat too much at a time, say at your next meal.
Spread the joy!
ALSO-do include the fat- it also adds to satiety, and clears the gall bladder.
They key is to limit too much consumption of food AT ONCE. But if you follow this you won’t likely be able to do that, so GRAZE!
Another trick is to pound down a glass of water before each meal or snack- fills you up.
You need to drink 10-12 10 oz glasses a water a day, anyway, to release the toxins and fat.

Sounds like you are making a commitment to this! It is amazing how little changes in how we think about food are necessary to get this chemical reaction going in our bodies…

Performersmom … thanks for the add’l words of advice. You’re the best.

I’ve recorded every thing I ate today and thought I was under the carbs for the day and then realized I ate 1-2 ounces of cashews in my car driving home. Once I logged that honestly, I was at 35 carbs for the day. Miraculously, the ketostix said I was in the high fat burning region … I think the low-carb gods are giving me a day off for being honest with myself with writing down everything I eat.

I have to say, that just recording every morsel I eat is helping a lot. I’m surprised what a little piggy I am!

It’s amazing, isn’t it?!!

OK…either my scale needs a new battery or today I’m back at my goal weight. My “eating” really didn’t change over the last two days…but I’ll take the weight anyway!!

Up 1.5 pounds from last week (4-5 pounds north of goal weight). I tell you, these last pounds are hanging on tenaciously…

Just finished too many beignets at cafe du monde. Now off to another reception. Will avoid the scale for a little while.

Doing better on my eating this weekend. Added garden work this weekend as well as a brisk mile walk. Also am chugging water … def. 64 oz each day now. Hopefully the scale or my pants will give me good news this week!

p.s. Don’t eat two Atkins snack bars (that contain sugar alcohol) in one day like I did on Friday … something happens that’s not very socially acceptable to toot.

Well, I’ve been staying away because i had nothing good to report. My back is mending and I look more symmetrical thanks to a great chiropractor. Yesterday I went to the gym for the first time in 6 weeks. It was depressing to start back with weights that i was using a year ago.

Oh well, tomorrow is day one (again) of tracking my calories and getting back into a regular (but gentler) exercise routine.

As far as bathing suits go, i hit the jackpot last summer at Marshall’s. I bought two suits taht have a kind of retro look. One piece with a fitted skirted bottom that can be pulled down a bit or pulled up for a more pleated look across the belly.
They are similar to this:
[Vintage Inspired Swimsuit 50’s Style Pin Up Red With White Polka Dot Bathing Suit - 6-18 - Unique Vintage - Cocktail, Evening, Pinup Dresses](http://www.unique-vintage.com/vintage-inspired-swimsuit-style-with-white-polka-bathing-suit-p-2197.html?utm_source=GoogleBase1&utm_medium=BaseFeed1&utm_campaign=products)

Although I go without the flower in my hair!

EPTR … love the swimsuit look, with or without the flower.

Well I loved every minute of my 4 days of great food. Now back to the drawing board…

EPTR - I think you rebound quickly on the weights. After a layoff, even though you are initially weak, it seems like you return to your former status pretty quickly. You weren’t away from exercising that long. You started this thread just for times like this so take advantage of our support.

Love the suit!

It has been ages since I bought a swim suit that would be used for anything other than lap swimming. Since I had significant surgery to remove skin cancer on my face several years ago, I really don’t sit at the pool or the beach. I am heading to the beach in a couple of weeks with a couple of women (three female cousins) and so I will have to find something. And a very protective umbrella!

Okay, the weigh in was successful finally! It paid to log every morsel. I am down 3 lbs from 2 weeks ago … and my khaki pants seem to fit a notch better. My lucky dog will be getting many long walks this week, so I think we’ll both benefit.

EPTR, good luck at the gym–I think you have the best situation: you WANT to be there and you want to get back to the level of fitness you had. Motivation is everything!

Snowflake: sad, but true, right? Logging in does work…speaking of which, off I go! I’m determined to lose 2 lbs this week…I got slightly over the hump last week, then indulged over the weekend.

Not much change here although I did dip .3 lb less than before and am bouncing around a half pound lower. It will be interesting to see if I gain or lose weight in China on DH’s business trip (leaving Wednesday for 8 days). As a non-brave eater who isn’t real keen on veggies, I expect to eat a lot of carbs. Portion control portion control portion control. I’m bringing a lot of granola bars! Also will be mostly traveling and watching the guys’ business meetings for the first couple of days so no chance to exercise.

Based on the itinerary for the first three days, I will mainly be in a sleep-deprived jet lag stupor. We get up early, fly to Toronto, Toronto to Beijing, long wait in Beijing airport, Beijing to Shenyang, hour drive to hotel in Liaoyang. If I have my time change right, we arrive at that hotel about 30 hours after we leave home. Next day up for breakfast, tour facilities, drive back in evening to Shenyang airport, fly back to Beijing, two hour drive to hotel in Tianjin. Next day tour Tianjin facilities and watch meetings. (I’m assuming they aren’t planning anything different for the three spouses.) Finally the day after than we end in Beijing and begin being tourists for 4/1/2 days (plenty of walking, I presume).

Congrats, Snowflake!

Loved the retro swimsuit, EPTR.

So who was going to do the raspberry ketone experiment for WLFD?

Who will be our R.A.T? (Raspberry Attempt to be Thin)

The walks are continuing, the dog is pooped, my muscles are happily sore (huge hills where I live, so not just a casual walk), and I’m eating very healthy, drinking tons of water. My weight crept up 1.5 pounds and finally I’m back at my total of -3 lbs., but this is annoying. I’m not even eating candy, snacks or drinking wine for 2.5 weeks. Grrrr. If this is my weight eating healthy, why wasn’t I even fatter with the way I used to eat? I’m just trying to reduce 10-15 lbs total, which is what I’ve gained since fall 2009.

Is it possible that my body was chronically under-hydrated and also lacking in sufficient protein so that it’s building up good stuff right now? I do feel pretty good, am sleeping great, and my skin looks lovely … just want those clothes to fit even better.
