Weight Loss for Dummies

^There’s an article in this month’s Atlantic about all the apps available to help people track calories & be part of online groups that hold them accountable for exercise & diet. There are great resources out there on the internet these days.

Agree with that mommusic. WLFD introduced me to the C25K app. I am almost through the 8 week program and could probably run a 5K now. Don’t plan to run one, but I feel like I actually could…

Ellemenope–you GO girl! We’ll all be cheering when you lose…that…last…lb!!!

I’ve seen several mentions of the Couch Potato to 5 k. Is there a website associated with it that I can go to? I don’t have a smart phone so I can’t use apps. Thanks everyone!

Here you go.

Thanks so much ellemenope!

awww, how cute, a couple on CC together: coureur and ellemenope!
Wonder how many posters on CC are couples…?

I’ve been alternately lurking and avoiding this thread but finally got started 2weeks ago. Very low carbs and lots of chicken and fish, down 6 lbs so far and another 15 to 20 to my goal.
I’m on my second week of Week One for the couch25k program…wasn’t ready to bump up to Week Two this morning - maybe Monday. I have never been a runner but want to try it.
It’s surprising and humbling how much harder slow running is than brisk walking.

Love the vibe on this thread. Very inspiring always to read thru.

I just went shopping with a friend who has lost 17 lbs. She is doing weight watchers. I am doing calorie counting only, and am going slow but am working on it, and trying to keep my head in the game.

Everyone here is an inspiration!

LMNOP- I told my friend of your great success (she has 100 lbs to lose) . She was very inspired.

Good luck to your friend, jym. The key is to be satisfied with losing 1-2 pounds a week…but keep it up for months. It doesn’t sound like much to say that you’ve lost 4 pounds, but kept up over time, it can become a significant number.

Keep up the good work, dragonmom!

ellemenope!

I just “got” your user name now—duh! I have a few questions about your successful weightloss. . .

I’ve just begun to poke around the livefit site and I see that there is membership. Have you used that or do you just do the free stuff?

Do you plan your menu for all of your meals in advance? I do so for dinner so I know what I have to do for the family but that’s it.

I see that you do a variety of workouts daily. Is that 6 days a week?

And finally, how long do you work out each day? Thanks so much for all of the inspirational posts!

I have to share this very easy and incredibly yummy eggplant dish. Made it using fresh basil out of my garden in pot on the deck. Deeeelish!!!
Is it possible for a male to lose 5% of body mass in just one week?

My employer started a “biggest loser” program. Every particpant pays $1 for weekly weight in and the winners (M/F) after 12 weeks take the pot.

The week one leader posted a 4.9% weight loss. This is in one normal work week.

Jym, I’m shocked - a Martha Stewart recipe with fewer than 10 ingredients? sounds delicious and simple.

LOL, BB. I wouldn’t know since I confess I do not spend much time looking at recipes. But I promise-- this was eeeeeZeeeee and very yummy! The baked eggplant was yummy even before I added the red wine vinegar and the basil.

I don’t know the livefit site. I do use the Livestrong free MyPlate and weight goals.

No I don’t plan my menus, but I find that I congregate toward a set number of breakfast and lunches that I know fit my calorie parameters and that I can whip up on the spot. With dinners, I try to keep things simple (piece of meat, veggies, salad)–so having the meat in the freezer or the frig is about as much planning as I get around to.

I try to do 3 physical activities a day during the week (5 days a week). On the weekend, I try to do at least the walk every day. If I’m energized, I can manage to do some strength training. I’m pretty much a slug on weekends.

How much time I spend doing physical activities depends on what activities I end up doing that day. If I play tennis, I usually spend 90-120 minutes. If I bike, I usually spend 45-60 minutes. (I usually don’t play tennis and bike in the same day.) My strength training workout takes about 30 minutes max (which includes a 10 min jog). My core workout takes about 15 minutes. My walks usually take 40-45 minutes. When I run, I will run for 20-30 minutes with a 10 minute walk added on to warm up and cool down.

I don’t have a “I’ll work out for 60 minutes a day” mindset. I’m lucky in that I have an empty nest and I don’t have a job, so I do have the free time to spend doing physical activities.

As for the actual workouts:

I use the “Fitness for iPad” app. The app has a number of pre set exercise routines that I then modify to take into account the equipment that I have (or don’t have).

I BROKE THE PLATEAU!!! Bless dh for flying to the east coast to drive home with S2!

that is all.

What I try to do:
20-40 minute walk 3x a week
60 minute warmup/weights/strength/core, 30 minute cardio 1x a week
45 minute warmup/weights/strength/core, 15-30 minute cardio 2 x week (this is the one that gets skipped more than it should be.

SJTH, congrats!! Great job. My Mr B is a bad influence when it comes to eating - we still eat healthy, but eat more and more often. I tend to eat much less when he is not around, because I do not feel like cooking for myself (and, of course, because I miss him).
