Weight Loss for Dummies

Congrats everyone!! Keep up the good work!

The chicken recipe has almost half my daily calorie allotment @-)

I’m not convinced that a chicken recipe with both bacon and cheese is a good idea for weight loss.

vabluebird you don’t precook the chicken! Mmmmmmm easy, and less cleanup that way. Will save for post whole 30 program>>>>

The recipe says no but I did. Sauteed each side 4 min.

I know. I’ll be honest. I am not a breakfast eater so my calories are spread between lunch and dinner and one snack. It makes it easier for me. On days I do crave breakfast and indulge, I tend to skip lunch, and end up with a semi-heavy snack in the afternoon.

It really does keep me “in line” to record all that I eat and be accountable to a calorie limit. I think I’ll have to do this for the rest of my life.
Today was training session plus cardio. Now, if only the exercising habit could get easier. I still don’t jump up all excited to head out to the gym. LOL. Maybe someday…
How is everyone doing? It has been two days since anyone has posted.

Took a long walk yesterday with DH. Just got home and will get on elliptical to watch The Voice, since I’ve exceeded calorie limits.

Joined Weight Watchers today. Need some IRL accountability and support before this gets any worse!

Please let us know how that works.

Yesterday I walked to Coralbrook’s flip and carried home a nice heavy brick for DH, who sometimes likes to weigh things down . Good for my arms! Today I tried out a walking group that claimed their goal was for everyone to be included and no one left to walk alone. Umm - started out and almost everyone was gone in 60 seconds. One other newbie slowed his pace to match me until I reached my turnaround point, then I sent him on. Walked back alone; leader passed me once and didn’t even see me.

Ah well, I did have a lovely 2.3 mile walk along the bay. I must need a strolling instead of walking group!

That was unkind of them, Marilyn. Sorry that happened to you.

I, too, find tracking my food intake necessary. My problem comes when I eat food I shouldn’t, and I don’t want to record it–I guess I don’t want to face it! But if I can get it recorded, I usually find the damage is not as bad as I expected and then I feel ok and stop there. If I don’t record it and imagine it to be worse than it actually was, I often feel discouraged and continue eating badly. So, I KNOW the tracking is crucial.

I track on my fitness pal. But I also bought a cute little notebook where each day I record the things that I’m trying to work on: food (I just record whether I ate vegan, vegetarian, or other. If I ate sugar or not. And any food items that were clearly not “on the plan”), cardio, strength, yoga, taking my vitamins/supplements, and tracking (I give myself a check for tracking). At the end of the week I do a “week in review” where I record my stats for the week…how many days I was successful in each item. I can also add things as they become important for me to work on. So far so good.

I have been very good about tracking workouts, etc. (thanks to FitBit). I have also made an effort to incorporate more movement during the day. The last three workdays I have walked up the steps to my new office- it’s on the 11th floor.
I do need to start food tracking again, though.

@marilyn ;( not nice people, sorry that happened

@Marilyn, what the “group” did was just plain selfish. To toute an activity as a “no drop” group activity and then proceed to do just that reflects that everyone, but in particular the group leader, was really just in it for themselves and not for the group cohesiveness, camaraderie and support. I see it all the time in my world of group cycling. Some rides, cyclists who are wannabe racers at an amateur level make every ride an ego contest that blows the group up. The best rides I go on are with elite level racers who could crush me but when they say it’s a no drop group ride really mean it. No egos involved, focus on the group synergy, stronger riders dropping back if needed to help struggling riders rejoin the group and just enjoyment of the group experience. You may want to say something to the leader of this group; if you don’t get a satisfactory response, maybe look for a different group?

Does anyone here have any tips for stretch marks. I am developing some on the upper corners of my chest as well as my biceps.

I would really prefer to not look like a tiger.

Well . . . my stretch here on the weight loss thread didn’t last long.

I don’t get why I do this. I get very into tracking my food, work-outs, et al., - then I always seem to flame out. My life gets stressful, I start traveling, etc., and it all goes to heck in a hand basket.

How do people maintain focus?

That was not nice @Marilyn. Sorry that happened to you. This is what prevents me from joining running groups.

Welcome back @SouthFloridaMom9 . We don’t all maintain focus, but we try to accept our missteps with grace and encourage each other to keep on keeping on. I have been tracking but have been over eating. So need to try to increase the exercise. Life definitely gets in the way. But stuck around here. We can share suggestions, support and cheer each other on. You can do it!

Thank you @jym626!

 We are all dummies here in this weight loss thread, but we can help each other over the hurdles.

@SouthFloridaMom9, join the club! I have lurked but not posted because I have been so off the wagon since we returned from our cruise. I’ve been in “oh, just this once” mode and it’s a very slippery slope. I am trying to get back on plan, but we’ve now decided to head to a family house in Florida next week to join our D for her last Spring Break (graduating law school in June). Anyway, I made plans for lunch with friends, but the good news is the deli is about 1.2 miles away and the weather is sufficiently fine to walk. So, lunch out (and it will be a salad of some sort) but accompanied by a 2+ mile walk. What do we say…baby steps?! Thanks everyone - even reading all your posts is very helpful to those of us lurking.
