Weight Loss for Dummies

Am at the gym but a person 2 over from me is making a really annoying racket, between his talking to himself (he doesn’t seem to be on the phone) very loud slapping noises with his feet and some very loud intermittent clacking noise. I’d guess it was some timer or something but who knows. It’s a really loud ruckus and I am gonna quit soon before I scream. And yes I have headphones on.

Did 2.3 mi. Half hour. And a few upper and lower body stuff. Gotta get away from that clacking and slapping. It’s like nails on a blackboard. Quite a racket!

That sounds like a great plan @gcmom ! Kudos @runnersmom for creatively incorporating fun plans in a great way.

Down another 1.8 lb. this a.m. I am thrilled and inspired! Actually looking forward to going to Zumba today!

Joined Weight Watchers today. Need some IRL accountability and support before this gets any worse!>>>>>>>>

Very good! Have you ever been a member before? Good luck and let us know how it’s going. We’ll support you here.

@Marilyn, well, what a disappointment. So sorry. That was rude of them, IMO. Or they should at least state up front that they are fast and don’t wait other than no one left behind!

@CountingDown – don’t know if you’ve been to WW before, but the new program is … interesting. Full of “do this for yourself” and a lot of what I think of as “new age touchy feely.” The nutrition stuff is solid, though (although I disagree that unlimited fruit is a good idea). I go to meetings on Monday mornings because I’ve found that what I call “Monday Morning Shaming” means I don’t over-indulge during the weekends; it’s made a difference to me.

I don’t get why I do this. I get very into tracking my food, work-outs, et al., - then I always seem to flame out. My life gets stressful, I start traveling, etc., and it all goes to heck in a hand basket.>>>>>>>>>

Okay, but here’s the thing. Let it go. Don’t beat yourself up about it, just begin again. It truly is difficult when you have a stressful life to cope with. You’re human, not superhuman, right? Just go at it again. It’s okay, really it is. The first step is always the hardest. Remember the positive outcomes awaiting you. Believe me, I absolutely understand. I ate - and drank- because of stress. I do understand, but again, don’t beat yourself up over it. It happens.

Does anyone here have any tips for stretch marks.>>>>>>>>>

Vit E Oil and/or Mederma.

It was certainly false advertising, but they may have misjudged how slow some people walk. I remember when I was younger trying to go jogging once with my parents. I could walk faster than they were running. I hope you can find another group whose pace is more similar to yours.

@SouthFloridaMom9 — I didn’t start losing weight until I decided that would be a high priority for me. My health comes first. First, not after my husband’s health, not after my kids’ health. I can’t take care of other people without taking care of myself. So, I track before I take the first bite; eating is the reward for tracking. I walk (and run and bike and swim, now, but I started with walking) because I am important, too.

Thank you very much @VaBluebird and @dmd77. You are both so right. I do beat myself up. And I do blame my husband and kids for my weight. :stuck_out_tongue: (just kidding) But ultimately it really is up to me and nobody is going to put my health first but me.

I have actually gotten annoyed with my husband because he pretty much always gets his work-outs in. And gets to the doctor.

A client unexpectedly delayed a meeting by an hour so I did a half hour of weights. Not too sweaty, but I was out of breath. Decent work out, I did two sets of all the basics. (Squats, kettleball swing, pull up with TRX, a bunch of arm exercises, some planks, a coupe of core exercises using the big ball.)

@SouthFloridaMom9 – just as a comment, when I decided I would lose weight (note: I didn’t say “I want to”… I said “I will”), I told my husband I needed his help, and that I would appreciate it if we could change how we managed dinner (which we eat together every day), his response was “I need to lose weight too.” He has been consistently supportive. Sometimes I think he was waiting for me to make up my mind to do it.

Thanks all for the support. I don’t think I walk all that slow; it’s a nice steady pace. I can do about two miles in under half an hour. But everyone else was moving! Most of them have been walking together for a long time and probably only noticed the newbies that were keeping up with them. It was ironic that it was another newbie who slowed down for me.

This is one of many activities run by a Meetup group. I run into some of the members at other activites so don’t want to make waves. There’s another walking group that I want to try called Walkabout International. They specify the pace of all their walks - casual is 2.5 mph and moderate is 3 mph. I can do that! And it’s not like I can’t walk by myself in beautiful locales and great weather almost every day.

@SouthFloridaMom9 - I’ve never been athletic; that was always DH’s job. He goes to his club almost every evening; says he does it so he can eat what he wants. My weight had crept up and crept up over the years - for some reason, this thread clicked with me. One major thing that had held me back from even trying was my eating habits. I knew there were foods I would never eat, and that there were foods that I wouldn’t give up. But I started within my limitations and it actually worked. I lost close to 50 pounds four years ago and improved all my labs. Much of that weight came back but I’m still down probably 20 pounds and holding. Many of the habits stuck which helps.

You’re correct that no one else can get you started - and sometimes getting pressured can backfire. The support and understanding on this thread is great; you never feel like a failure.

When people ask me how I lost the weight I told them I ate less and exercised more. Who knew! It’s my secret that I share.

I have actually gotten annoyed with my husband because he pretty much always gets his work-outs in. And gets to the doctor.>>>>>>>>>>>

Oh, you just brought back a memory. Dh would work and go to the gym after work three times a week and never, ever once asked me if that was okay. But for me to go to the gym, I had to either arrange child care or “ask” him if I could go in the evening. I used to marvel at why did I have to ask and he didn’t! Sure, I was only working part time. And took care of everything else for three kids. He was always free but I wasn’t. Why was that?

Zumba, one hour. I just was not energized today so it was tough.

@SouthFloridaMom9
Give yourself an A and a giant pat on the back for coming here to make the effort. That is a huge start. We try to be a kind, gentle crowd, so start by being kind to yourself!! You can do it!.

I have exceeded my calories for the past several days, and my exercising is not as consistent as it was (and I felt a little guilty) but I am trying to keep my head in the game.

@Marilyn, kudos for walking. Aren’t you recovering from an injury?

And you go, @dmd77 and @mathmom

Well,@VaBluebird, that sure wasn’t fair! Would think DH would support your wanting to exercise!

Thank you guys for being so supportive. Thanks to you I actually got out and got my B12 shot (long story, but they do help me - have had medical guidance on this). Tracked my food today and hoping to walk in the morning.

@VaBluebird - great job getting your Zumba in, especially when you weren’t feeling it.
