@bookworm - I have a lot of hip problems that make exercise a challenge. My PT is great and I give him credit for changing my life. I used to need hip injections for bursitis 4 times a year. Each year we reduced them and I realize the last one I had was in Jan of 2016 so over a year ago. When I see my spine going out of alignment I schedule a few visits. My pelvis rotates and my sacrum locks up and I can visibly see my symmetry is all out of whack. Have the same problem with the shoulder getting out of alignment and when I lay flat on my back I am tilted to one side. All the misalignment caused my scoliosis can translate down to my knees and feet. The reason for the long explanation is that in Jan I started taking Nia dance class at my gym. I am amazed at how much better my body feels and how it has helped open up my sacrum and hip joints.
A huge benefit of my recent exercise routine is that yesterday I was distracted going down my porch steps. I took a tumble and landed on my arm, leg and butt. I felt my head heading towards the concrete driveway but I was able to use my newly acquired core strength to keep my head from hitting the ground. I was really thankful I was not seriously hurt especially since H is out of town.
Sun in out and I’m determined to keep up my new routine. Hope all is well with all of you.
Oh no Mom60! I’m glad you are mainly ok and didn’t hit your head!
Oh my, @mom60 ! Hope you are ok!
Yeeks! Hope you are ok @mom60. I, also, experience a bit of dizziness when I put my head back , on floor for yoga or stretching. Assume it ear related.
Curious did you find out anything from your medical exams ?
Thank you for all your warm wishes. The left knee tends to hurt when I do any squatting exercises but I have had that off and on. My takeaway is that as we age we need to be more aware of stairs and no looking at my phone as I descend stairs and the better shape we are in the easier it is to weather falls. I also am being more aware of where our dog is and to get out of his way if he is in doing a rambunctious run up and down our house. The fall was totally my fault as I was in a rush, looking down at the phone and a hyper dog.
@SouthJerseyChessMom - the Dr thinks I experience two different types of dizziness. One is vertigo when the world spins when I roll on my side. The other type is a dizziness I get when I bend over or sit up quickly. Both she feels for me occur from allergies. Mainly I get vertigo but this year had the other as well. I can usually tell when it is going to start. A week or so prior my ears begin to feel full. If I regularly use Flonase I can keep the vertigo at bay. What I don’t like is that I have thin skin and if I regularly use the Flonase my arms bruise and bled easily.
This last time I was feeling pain around my sinuses. She recommended I use a saline spray twice a day. It really helps to reduce the sinus pressure.
So my arsenal is saline spray, Flonase and a generic form of Bonine. I’m also careful to not do side planks during my exercise class. For some reason my ears don’t like the moving from side to back. If I’m experiencing a period of vertigo or dizziness I do my stretching from the sitting position or put a bolster under my neck.
I never had ear problems till I went sailing in Thailand. When I came back I had vertigo for the first time and also a fungal ear infection. Both the internist and the ENT say the two weren’t connected but ever since that trip I get periods of vertigo.
^!thanks @mom60 for the details. I have heard of someone who went on cruise and developed similar issues, seems connected. Ears, allergies sinuses all connected and complicated.
I read this thread (in its entirety!) when I was gearing up for making another run at changing my unhealthy habits, and it was tremendously helpful. Hope some of you still have it bookmarked and would love to see it active again.
I am thrilled that I have lost almost 30 pounds over the last several months, but I am puzzled that NO ONE has said anything about it, not even folks I don’t see often who would be more likely to notice a change. I know making comments about someone’s appearance is fraught with danger, and I still have 50 pounds to lose before hitting goal so am not by any means looking slender, but it’s still weird. Doesn’t seem to matter if I am wearing something so loose it is at risk of falling off or something that fits.
I know I can count on you guys to tell me I look great!
Congratulations @yauponredux and thanks for bringing this thread back up!
Congratulations @yauponredux - that is an amazing amount of weight to lose. Way to go!!!
I am always hesitant to comment when someone IRL has lost weight. It makes me worry if they are ill, or doing chemo, or something negative like that. But it is a great feeling when people notice.
@SouthFloridaMom9, that is a good point. At my age, illness is probably a more likely reason for weight loss than diet & exercise!
Congrats to you, @yauponredux! People are probably afraid to offend so don’t comment. Losing weight is hard! Good for you.
In my experience, no one even notices you’ve lost weight before you’ve lost 25 to 30 pounds. Seriously. Somewhere around 30 pounds they say (very quietly) something like “have you been dieting?” because they’re afraid you’ll say “no, I’m dying of cancer”. So, if you want people to give you attagirls for losing weight, you have to tell them exactly what you’ve been doing, slightly triumphantly.
And congratulations! Keep on doing whatever you’re doing!
@yauponredux :
lol. Welcome to the club…my wife several months ago switched us over to eating a non inflammatory diet (it is really a low fat diet that is mostly vegetable based, we eat little meat or dairy, try to stay away from all kinds of fats, etc). I have lost about 30 pounds (though seem to be plateauing these days, it is how it works), and few people really notice, though it also is because if you see someone daily you really don’t notice, got my hair done last week and the woman was like “wow, you really trimmed down”…and like you, I have roughly another 50 pounds to get where i want to go, so I hear you:). Funny part is we started this for health reasons, because of our stage of life and other things, wasn’t as much about weight loss, and now we both get bummed out if it seems the scale won’t move:). (Though I blame the scale, I think it must be made by Acme!)
Reviving the thread given some increased/renewed interest in supporting each other through this journey. @bjkmom - perhaps merging your thread here might be a helpful plan, with many additional readers.
Just made a fruit and spinach smoothie with added protein powder. Probably too much sugar in all the fruit, but hard to avoid.
I’m adding chia seeds to everything. They’re little power packs!
Do they grow out of clay heads or clay animals at the holidays?
I forgot about the chia pet. I add Chia seeds to oatmeal and yogurt. For a time I made chia pudding but I didn’t find it that tasty.
Are there wonderful benefits of Chia seeds?do they have any taste?
Just googled:
“One ounce (about 2 tablespoons) contains 139 calories, 4 grams of protein, 9 grams fat, 12 grams carbohydrates and 11 grams of fiber, plus vitamins and minerals. The mild, nutty flavor of chia seeds makes them easy to add to foods and beverages.”
