Weight Loss for Dummies

Chia seeds are supposed to be a good source of Omega three.I don’t find them to have any flavor. They do add texture. I like to put a sprinkling of chia seeds, nuts and goji berries on my serving of plain yogurt. I will also sometimes add a tablespoon of peanut or almond butter and fresh blueberries. I think the chia seeds make me fill full. I also like flax seed but my H thinks it smells fishy so I don’t keep it in the house. I don’t eat salmon so I feel like I need to add omegas when I can.

That’s a lot of calories- but then again who uses 2 tbl?

The calories, fat and carbs that come from chia seeds, hemp seeds, flax seeds, etc. are healthy. I sprinkle them on my breakfast almost every morning.

Getting up from the table to add chia seeds to my bowl of greek yogurt and berries …

Chia seeds swell when liquid is added to them. It takes a few minutes. I find they definitely help me feel full and also add lots of fiber…

that’s helpful- thanks.

@yauponredux congrats on your weight loss earlier this year! I was doing my own health kick (whole30) and was so busy cooking, shopping and chopping vegetables that I didn’t have as much time to wander here.

I started seeing a chiropractor in August who is really into optimizing health and I am doing great. i can now exercise without pain and have added strength training back in to my week. I didn’t even realize how much my neck and back hurt until he fixed them.

Husband joined me on this health kick so for once we are eating same food, so I am sticking with it. 10 pounds fell off before I even started to increase exercise, so I am seeing my old body again (that pre-50 year-old that had a flatter tummy and didn’t mind if someone saw my curvy calves).

Congrats!

Seems this thread got replaced by another. Would be great to see them both stay alive. Am closing in on halfway to my goal… And just started returning to the gym after the injury. Checking in on the weight loss traveling buddies here.

Hope some of the old posters chime in. @SnowflakeVT are you still doing whole30?

Hello again! I think all the threads now tend to move quickly away from tips and tricks and support, and into specific foods and diets and such.

I’m holding my own; still down about 8 pounds from last summer and very close to where I was before I broke my ankle three years ago. DH is having rotator cuff surgery tomorrow so we’ll be laying low for a while - easier to behave (better eating and exercise) when we’re not socializing as much. I’m trying hard to approach my original successful WLFD lifestyle!

@Marilyn - glad you’re back. My H has a torn rotator cuff but has put off surgery for years. He has a high pain tolerance and has just altered his volleyball and tennis game. I wish he would just get it over with. He hates the idea of the down time.
I weighed myself and for the first time in a long while I’m under 150 lbs.
I think for me the most successful tip that has worked for me is the limit my dining out. Cooking at home and making enough for lunch the next day has been key for me. I try to limit eating out to one day a week.
I had stopped tracking my food on MyFitnessPal but I think I’m going to start that again and see if I can get my carb numbers lower and see what that does.

Hi @mom60 … yes, just finished modified whole30 after the holidays. I am down 14 lbs overall and I am not counting calories.

I think the whole30 exercise helped me to re-train myself on eating real food most of the time. I got into the habit of allowing processed food (frozen meals or most store bought snacks) to replace cooking with real food, but now most of my food (except wine!) is made from scratch, even my paleo bars that I bring to work.

Net:

  • eat organic vegetables (and a little fruit, but mostly vegetables)
  • eat grass fed/range free/wild animal protein where you can afford it,
  • make from scratch and use whole and fresh ingredients as much as possible,
  • use fats with every meal … ghee, coconut oil, avocado oil, and olive oil.
  • Avoid fake adders that have chemicals,
  • use pepper, sea/Himalayan salt and spices for more flavor
  • avoid sugar (it causes inflammation) and alcohol (but I drink a glass of wine a few times a week)
  • add in grains, rice, potatoes etc. if you need more calories, but I still limit my grains.
  • recognize that exercise or increased exercise is not the solution to losing weight, but it is good for your body in many ways. Eating like the above list is what got my 10 lbs off in the 30 days, exercising since then has only lost 4 more pounds, so I am convinced that eating and resetting your hormones and gut is priority one.

^I like this plan. Eating fewer processed foods and cooking more helps me lose weight. I do eat plenty of fruit, though, and use whole grains and starchy veggies (beans, potatoes and sweet potatoes) for more energy. Getting rid of the chips and cookies and the sweets and eating move natural stuff helps me lose weight.

Thanks @SnowflakeVT for updating us. I’m relooking at Whole 30, Keto and Paleo. My initial thinking is that I’m going to rethink some of my routine foods and remove them and see how I feel. I want to keep inflammation down and also reduce bloating. Both of my parents were diabetic one a type 1the other type 2. Both had bad eating habits that I have vowed not to repeat.
I’ve always been a pretty clean eater and I don’t mind cooking. I was not however a fan of vegetables and that has changed in the past year. I’ve tried new ways of cooking them and I think my taste buds have changed. I’m not a big fruit eater.
I think after reading both @Nrdsb4 and @SnowflakeVT post I need to add more fat into my diet. It just goes so against all the years we were told fat is bad.
Last January I admitted that I needed to do more for my health. For me initially that meant I joined a gym and stepped outside my comfort zone. I thought at the time my eating was good and didn’t make changes. I got stronger but I actually gained weight. When someone started a new thread on weight loss in the spring I went back to tracking my eating. The combination of make mg some changes in my eating and the gym have finally helped me lose some weight.
So far this week I’m taking out grains and dairy and upping my fat. I’m already seeing the weight loss start again. What are your thoughts on dairy?
Also would love the Paleo bar recipe.
Thanks

I eat dairy. Yogurt, cheese, even milk. It is a good source of protein, calcium, and vitamin D. And it tastes good. I don’t have any GI issues with it. I do feel like one of the few middle aged women who still embraces dairy.

Lizardly I’ve never been a milk drinker. I tried when I was pregnant with my first child but it made me gag. I love yogurt and I love cheese. I decided to see what not having dairy does for my body because I’ve not had it for a week due to a head cold. I see adding it back into my diet.
I’ve found the website Nom Nom Paleo to have some pretty good recipes.

I eat Greek yogurt almost everyday, the full fat variety. I count it as a serving of protein and fat. The dairy products I use are full fat for the most part- I am not a big cheese eater. The program I’m following recommends a palm size serving of lean protein, a thumb sized portion of fat, and a cupped handful of carbs at each meal. These are mostly whole foods in as close to the natural state as possible. The focus is on identifying why you overeat and gradual behavior modification. It has worked well for me and I feel like I’m accomplishing lasting change - my weight is down 25 pounds since starting in August.

I live in a part of the country that loves us our cheese.

I am down 40 pounds. The last 3 I wasn’t even trying. I am working now on figuring out how to maintain without going bananas at the bakery.

My local food coop has a salad line that I use probably 4 days a week. I don’t like to cook and I don’t like prep work so this keeps us eating salads before smaller meals. Now that the kids are gone I feel I can spend the 4 bucks a day (feeds both of us) and there is no food waste from a head of lettuce rotting in the fridge.

Hi ladies!! Nice to see you here! I am working n it and looking forward to traveling buddies! almost 8 lb down.
