Weight Loss for Dummies

Friday 'fess up time. I’ve lost 8 pounds and 1 inch since this thread started. I guess “eat less, move more” works for me.

wnp2- I JUST saw those jumbo marshmallows for the first time at Walgreen’s a little while ago. They are amazing! (I didn’t buy them, but I will tell my sister about them for the S’Mores at the Poconos house…)

ellemenope- excellent! Everyone- keep up the good work. Even when you don’t see scale results, things are changing and there might be a big drop just ahead for you. That has been the experience of many in our WW group at work.

I forgot to weigh myself this morning, so I will do it tomorrow. I had a couple of nights of very little sleep this week, and I’ve been waking up late in the mornings and scrambling.

For me, the way I feel when I follow the new eating plan is better motivation for me than weight loss, because it is immediate. Significant weight loss takes weeks, at least, and it is hard for me to imagine a future possibility, as opposed to a present reality. The changes I have made so far are (1) eating much less sugar, (2) eating many more vegetables, (3) eating much less in the way of empty carbs, (4) eating more protein. The downside of this plan is that it takes a great deal of planning and preparation, and it is hard to stick to when travelling, or in situations where there is little choice of food (for example, lunch meetings where sandwiches are brought in). I’m finding that airports often have some good choices (yogurt, hard-boiled eggs), but I travel more often by train and there is not much available there. I was starving on the train the other day, and the best snack I could find was a bag of pretzels. They did have nuts, but they were Smokehouse Almonds, and I hate those. The pretzels were surprisingly high in calories/carbs. I might as well have had a piece of cake. I’m going to have to carry around bags of plain almonds or other acceptable snacks. More planning/prep. This is my weak point.

Ellemenope, congratulations! Those are fantastic results.

NYMom, first step is recognizing the problem! Carrying around some emergency packs of nuts or something sounds like a good fix!

Thank you. But I also know that the first pounds are the quickest to come off and that CONSTANT VIGILANCE (as Mad Eye Moody would say) are words to live by.

Congrats, ellemenope! For you Livestrong users, what happened to the weight tracker??? I’m not counting carbs or calories for now, but I do track my weight every day – the graph has changed and I hate it! It’s rounding up when you enter a decimal. Do not like. Plus it’s kind of fuzzier.

Down 1/2 a pound since last Friday which given that I was +3 on Monday makes me happy.

I have to say though I had some days when I felt hungry more than I would have liked.

I hate the new weight graph at Livestrong too. The old one you could superimposed a graph of your net calories over it which really made it clear what was required. That option seems to have disappeared.

Those options may have disappeared to the paid service. Those fractional weights are important!

Wait - I just went and tried it again, and they seem to be retaining the digits after the decimal point - at least two of them. I entered XYZ.15 and it kept all the digits. My scale only give weight to the nearest 0.5 pound, though.

I am having fun on vacation but part of me can’t wait to get home and back on track. I feel bloated.

Does traipsing around one theme park after another in 90 degree heat count as exercise?

Ellenmope! Wow! Good for you :)

OK, I went on the Livestrong forums and that was a mistake that they left out the fractions of weight so they have fixed it. They got a few complaints! My scale weighs by .2 increments so I keep a pretty close eye on my fractions. I still don’t like the new graph though because I think they made it smaller to add in a giant Bounty paper towel ad next to it. Seemed like there was a lot more room before to display my weight for 5 months.

EPTR, that definitely sounds like exercise to me, or maybe my biggest nightmare? Keep drinking your water!

traipsing around those theme parks in hot weather DEFINITELY counts as exercise! I don’t think I have ever been so exhausted, and I was in pretty good shape when I took those family Disney trips.

Thanks! I feel a little better about it, now. I really have been trying to eat as well as possible. A lot of Greek yogurt and fruit. Salads whenever possible. A little too much wine and Margeritas but, well…if you knew my extended family, you would understand :)

Walking around Disneyland all day certainly counts as exercise. Just just make sure you aren’t also stopping at every churro stand or ice cream kiosk you come across.

NYMom - I was thinking of you this morning. I woke up a little under the weather today. My stomach was a little queasy and I had a ton of things to do. I debated having a can of coke, I just knew I would feel better. I wanted to give you a call and ask for a special dispensation from the coke ban - LOL. I did stop at a convenience store, had my coke and really did feel better. I am promising myself that there will be NO backsliding.

EPTR - wine consumed in an effort to stay loose with relatives should be calorie free. Also sandwiches consumed with elderly parents after doctors’ appointments. Yes, if there is a God, there should be a special list of foods that are miraculously calorie free.

I have not weighed myself since before the 4th. I don’t think I want to see it. I know I am back to eating too many carbs. Mexican food has been my downfall. I do have on a pair of shorts that have not fit in 5 yrs. They are actually loose.

Thanks Worknprogress!
I do think that I worked off the wine and Margerita calories while exercising self restraint!

Mom60! Good for you. Go weigh yourself! If the shorts are loose, the shorts are loose! Shorts don’t lie! I wish mine did. They could fudge the truth about the cellulite, if they did. I’d be okay with that.

I’ve had a good week since returning from vacation where I didn’t gain but didn’t lose. I was pretty active on vacation so maybe some extra calorie burning happened after coming home!
According to my scales, I’ve lost two pounds this week give or take a few ounces.

I don’t know how long y’all have been at this but I’ve wondered what any of y’all who’ve been at it for awhile are doing with your clothes that are too big. Is anyone buying new stuff? Last years shorts were too big this spring so I bought new ones in April. Now all of those are too big and I’m kicking myself for spending the money on them…came from Kohls so not a huge investment…but still.

I think we should make that list of foods that are miraculously calorie free, and the reason they are allowed.

I will start-Mexican and Italian food (pasta and pizza) that had to be consumed while son told us that he was on the verge of a breakdown. Spent the week with him eating at his favorite restaurants and let him pour his heart out. All is well, but it was a tough week.

Chick-fil-a because my father was having a Pacemaker installed (is that the right word?) and my mother wanted me to go across the street from the hospital and get Chick-fil-a for her. Of course while there I had to get food for me! I got a sandwich and fries which I haven’t eaten in months.

Snowball - I have been wondering how things were going for you!!! Is it a “just” a pacemaker or does it also have a defibrillator? I think the word they use (if you want to sound like you are just so on top of things) is implanted. I have often said installed, but I am pretty sure implanted is the term.

Yes, Snowball, those two items qualify.

Also any food consumed when someone breaks up with your daughter or son. Only half of the calories are exempt if your son or daughter does the breaking up. Sorry, but those are the rules. And a second apology for getting off topic!!
