Were you SO SURPRISED when you first discovered that u could edit wikipedia?

I realized that when I went to George W. Bush’s page for the first time. And then the page emptied - instead, it said “bush sucks” or something like that. Anyways, I was SO surprised since I thought the vandal successfully deleted the Bush page forever. But then I was ALSO surprised when I found it restored a few minutes later.

And then I was thinking, “OMG I CAN EDIT THIS”. And wondered how the hell people could trust such a source.

Um, isn’t that kinda the ENTIRE CONCEPT of wikipedia?

And yeah, you can’t trust it for detailed answers and you can’t trust it at all on anything controversial. but most general information is pretty reliable. Vandalism gets reverted within minutes 95% of the time.

Well, people don’t trust Wikipedia THAT MUCH, but people trust it a lot more now than they did back in 2005. Even professors who write blogs frequently reference Wikipedia for general information now - it’s only in arguments or papers when they start citing more credible sources

Trust me. Once you go inside Wikipeida, you’ll see the structure and why it can be trusted. Those guys run their site just as well as most governments run their countries. They have detailed policies and a structured hierarchy.
