Wesleyan, BC, NYU, or USC?

Thoughts?? Into BC Arts and Sciences, NYU Gallatin, and USC Arts and Sciences. Waitlisted at Wesleyan. All completely different. Let’s go over some pros and cons.

All 4 are going to give you an excellent education, but all 4 have a very different vibe.

Los Angeles is a love-it-or-hate-it sort of city. If you love the sun, traffic, and I’m-cooler-than-you attitude of LA, then go to USC. If you don’t like those things, 4 years there would be unbearable.

NYU’s location is also a love-it-or-hate-it area…you’d have to really really love urban life to not get overwhelmed there. You want urban? It doesn’t get any more urban.

BC is NOT a love-it-or-hate-it place. You like quiet and safe? The campus is quiet and safe. You want noisy and urban? Noisy and urban is a short trolley ride away. You want small classes, it has them. You want big classes, it has them. You want bigtime sports, it has them. You want to ignore bigtime sports, it’s easy to do that too. You want religion? It’s got a ton of it. You don’t like religion, nobody will force anything religious on you (you take 2 theology courses, and that’s it).

I don’t know if Wesleyan is as liberal as everybody claims, but from what people on collegeconfidential say, if you want to be exposed to something other than the standard liberal dogma, it’s not the right place.

Um, people definitely recycle at Wesleyan: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/12273594-post48.html</a>
;)

They recycle everything except the American flag…they burn those.

I can’t offer much information on NYU or BC, but I love being a student at 'SC. The weather is undeniably nice year-round. The students, faculty, and alumni are very friendly, helpful, and supportive. The overall sense of family and pride at USC is overwhelming (‘trojan for life’). It becomes sort of a de facto family, if you will. The campus is gorgeous and is continually being updated and improved upon. The city is incredibly diverse and offers everything and more.

Suffice it to say, you can’t go wrong with SC, and you won’t be disappointed. Fight on!

If you’re drawn to the idea of attending a small, liberal arts college, but, the prospect of being in Red Sox Nation 24/7/ scares you, you might prefer Wesleyan over BC.

It’s easy to recycle a high % of your waste when the only things you throw out are worn-out yoga mats and old “Bush Sucks” banners.

I’m in almost the same dilemma! Wesleyan or Boston College ahhhhh. Except I’m not on the waiting list for Wes.

Also, I really can’t offer any advice; I just wanted to empathize with you!

Sheesh, Schmaltz, don’t you even pay attention to your old threads?

JW, I thought you were saying that Middletown had a high rate of recycling and Boston’s was low, and since recycling is about the only thing that moves the needle on the liberals’ moral compass, Wesleyan folks were clearly superior than BC folks.

Wrong on so many levels. I mean, you introduced yourself to this thread by stating that the OP would be more likely to find more points of view at BC than at Wesleyan. I’m saying what he’ll likely find are just more people from Boston and that perhaps there is a cultural reason that explains your strange animus against recycling. If that appeals to him or her, fine. If they’re looking for a little bit more cosmopolitan atmosphere, Wesleyan probably offers more. That doesn’t make the people who go there “superior”, it just makes the school as a setting more appealing to some people.

I don’t think the OP cares how much a school recycles. But I would go with USC. USC is one of those schools that is on the rise and is just all around good in many things from engineering to business.

Best of luck!

There’s not much point dwelling on Wesleyan because the chances of getting off the waitlist there are remote (~ 3%).

As I said in the other thread, I have zero aversion to recycling. I do have an aversion to people who are self-righteous about such issues.

I also scoff at the notion that schools like Wesleyan are the open-minded ones. It’s the liberal schools where speakers are barred and shouted down if their views violate left-wing dogma.

I think it’s absolutely certain that a broad range of ideas are discussed at BC. Liberals have their say and conservatives have theirs. Can you say the same about Wes? Does “cosmopolitan”=liberal?

Usc>nyu>bc.

Personally I would go to USC or BC - BC for the traditional college experience and USC for having such a strong presence in LA. NYU would be out simply because of the absence of campus life, which would be a major factor for me.

Yeah, I can. And, to some extent I think it does.

So what do you think about a college like Notre Dame having a small minority protesting giving Obama an honorary degree (with the actual commencement ceremony having zero protests at it)? Are there plenty of stories of liberal speakers being shouted down and barred from speaking? Are there plenty of professors with right-wing agendas at our colleges forcing their views on students and preventing professors with opposing views from being hired? Are there plenty of stories of military recruiters being embraced and Peace Corps recruiters being banned from campus? Are the right-wingers at CBS, ABC, NBC, and CNN hiding such cases from us?

I’d think about where you want to end up post-college. If you want to be in Cali, USC will give you an edge over the other schools. Do you want to work in Boston? Go to BC.

Think about the weather-- do you want to live in LA? How about freezing cold Boston? I live in Boston, so I’m not trying to rag on it. But we got snow yesterday (april 1st). Just sayin’.

Other considerations:

 • I almost went to Wesleyan. As you note, your chances of getting off the WL are slim. But it is very liberal. It’s like living in Brooklyn. Do you like hipsters, NPR, and protests? Definitely work to get off that waitlist! One exception is Wes’s science department. It is outstanding, really good for premeds, and less hippie  Even though I decided against Wes, my best friend went there, so I spent a lot of time on campus. He went on to get his MFA and writes plays. His friend from Wes works at NPR’s Story Corps.

On the flip side, I have friends that went to USC and now work in Hollywood. Totally different tracks. All great schools.

@post #18 - you’ve lost me.
