What are my chances? Any help is great!

Okay, I’ll try and make this short. Just applied to USF last night (They will get my transcripts on january 10th, or earlier) I know I’m applying a bit late-long story! What are my chances of gaining admissions to summer term, classified as in state (Really in illinois, have florida prepaid)

I think that might be it…or all I can think of right now, anyway. I know I don’t meet the math ACT subscore, and am two points off…but I’m hoping that MAYBE they give me some kind of chance, because on their site it stated something along the lines of, “If a student does not meet minimum requirments, we see if they have special talents, can contribute a unique aspect to the school, etc” But I’m not sure if I count as that.

So, what do you think? Chances? Any help would be great.

In my humble opinion, you have a better than 50 % chance of gaining admissions at USF.
I also believe that you will improve your chances at admissions if you can raise your overall ACT a bit. Also search on the web for the USF freshman 2012 summer admissions matrix as it will offer a lot of good information on the selection process. Good Luck !

USF’s admission guidelines state you must have at least a 19 math subscore to be offered regular admission. If you don’t present them with at least a 19 soon, your chances for admission are poor. They gotta draw a line somewhere and unless you get a 19 for math you won’t even get to the starting block for admission consideration. What are you doing to get a 19?

Better question, what am I NOT doing, lol. I’ve always struggled with math, and I understand it, but I can’t figure out and solve a math problem in a minute. By the time I realize what I need to do, I need to move on. I don’t really have a problem taking the ACT again, I feel like I may be able to get the 17 up to 19, but I was just curious as to if any of the EC’s stated above would count as ‘unique or contribution to the college’. I saw the matrix, and I would need six/five other factors, and I MIGHT have six, according to the side panel descriptions. However, does USF calculate any form of electives into play, or only core classes?

let me be blunt with you-- from what I understand, with a 17 Math, your chances are 0%. I live in FL and it’s actually a state requirement for the major universities… so it’s not like they really have the option to overlook it. (my older brother is not a good test-taker and this is what they told him a couple years ago when he had low scores) :stuck_out_tongue:

…you need to RE-TEST asap!!! gl :)

Well, I’m trying to find out what happens with UCF (Huge issue going on, mix up with mine and my twins application, my acceptance of two months was pulled, both under review…you know, normal stuff! Lol) Do you know if USF superstores? If they did, I’d love to focus purley on the math section, this time around, and they could combine. If not, I feel a little rusty in my reading and english…but I really don’t have a huge problem with retaking the ACT, but I’m going to probably wait until february to see what’s going on with UCF, if it doesn’t look promising, then I’ll retake the test. If I can get the math up to 19, what do you think my chances are?

I’m pretty sure USF superscores the SAT and ACT. So I would take it again as soon as you can. Maybe try the SAT too if you can, some people find one test easier over the other.

Also, SAT scores come back faster than ACT (if you take the writing part, ACT takes 5 weeks, which I think USF requires…).

But if they superstore, they can just take it from a previous time, right? I took the writing portion each time (so twice) and I kept scoring nine, and could never get a 10, lol. Do they look at combined writing? Because I received 24. If they super score, perfect, then I can focus on math:)

Right. That’s what I’m currently doing too, my math and writing were great on SAT, but my Critical Reading was low. So I took it again and only had to worry about the critical reading the second time around.

You should take my math for me! Lol.
I hate that I can manage a 30 on reading, with 20 minutes to spare, yet can’t even get a nineteen on math. Will it be hard to raise it up?

If you spent half the time you spend posting on CC studying and preparing for math portion of ACT test you’d have the minimum 19 already. USF superscores the ACT, just study for the math portion. Sign up for earliest ACT test possible. Get an ACT study guide and an algebra I book and get busy–if you don’t, you’re not getting in USF.

Like Confucius say: “He who waits for roast duck to fly into open mouth go hungry!”

You need to take action. You need to work now getting ready for math on ACT test after you sign up to take it; if you do nothing but jabber on CC about your misfortunes you’ll end up getting nowhere.

“Will it be hard?” Growing up is hard…deal with it!

First off all, the only time I posts so frequently is from my phone, when I’m AT WORK, and it’s slow. So it’s not as though I’m wasting precious ‘me’ time to post on this site. I would bring homework, but my head manager does not allow us to bring books of any kind, because it takes up too much space. Also, I would like if you didn’t sound so forceful and rude when you said, “growing up is hard, deal with it!” If you knew even HALF of the things I’ve been forced through, and have experianced, you would not that I’m more prepared for life then the vast majority of members on this thread. However, I’d like not to state these situations/experiances/every day things I have to deal with, well…because it’s no one’s business but my own. As I stated, I will be retaking the ACT, so this comment about, “Jabbing about misfortunes” etc, was really unneccessary and fairly rude, as stated above. Right now, I’m focusing on finals, because if I can get ONE grade up, I’ll have a 3.6 GPA, which, under the circumstances we were told, will allow me to gain my acceptence back from them. Frankly, I’m more concerned of gaining my acceptence back to the school I WANT to be at. So, I will focus on finals, and if nothing positive occurs after that, then I will retake the ACT. Simple as that.

I have a question- If you need a minimum of 19 for the math ACT for USF, does the same requirement apply to UCF anyway??

Definitely spend some time with a prep book and since it is superscored spend all of your time on the math. Perhaps a teacher or math-whiz friend can provide a little tutoring?

Good luck!

Involved-No, there is no specific subscore you need on each section. I know this, not just from others saying it, but when they did accept me, they did have my ACT score correct, with even the 17 in math. I think that it isn’t as big of a deal to them, because unless you take the AP calculus exam at the end of your senior year (If you’re in that class, or feel comfortable taking it) every incoming freshmen takes the placement test. It doesn’t matter if you have a 30 in math, they still make you take the placement test (Which can be taken online) because they want to be positive you will be placed in the correct math class. I like this, because it doesn’t immediatly eliminate students from admissions, just because they don’t meet a certain score. Some of us are stronger at other subjects, like my 30 reading. Why take the oppertunity away from students who are better at one thing, and don’t at all plan to get into a major involving certain math? One of the many things I like about this school, even if they’re given me trouble right now for their mix up, lol.

I think that you have a Good chance, though your ACT could be higher. (I had a 21 Com.) Though my SAT makes up for it.

I just had one of my friends that had a 2.95 GPA, the things they accomplished were no where near what you have, get accepted for summer.

If you have the money, you should schedule a visit, I heard that it boosts your chances of getting accepted and it shows them that you really want to go there.

I see that you have written two novels? What degree are you going for?

Personally, I’m going for the BA in Creative Writing and a PHD in English. (Passes all my College English classes with a 96%, so why not?)

Oh, and since you were the only one who comment on my post on the UCF Board, HEY! /waves lol

I’m still waiting on my High school transcripts to be sent, since they got lost in the mail along with the letter of recommendation from my English teacher, but WHEN we both get accepted. CHEERS!

Tampa is a great place to be. Though just a heads up, if you go out at night, get some mace, or a pocket knife. (you’re allowed to have a pocket knife and mace on campus. My friend was with her friend(s) and they were chances back to their dorm by a couple of guys. SO BE CAREFUL AND PREPARED!)

lol i went WAYYY off topic here. XD

Mystral -
Not to steal any thunder from your post, but I sincerely appreciate if
you could please qualify your response in regard that your friend got in
with a GPA of 2.95; please elaborate and how did she accomplish this task ?
Also-
Please explain how visiting the college will improve ones chances at admission-
From where are you obtaining this information ? Any information is sincerely
appreciated as I am trying my best to help out a fellow classmate who s application is only but average.

I am not an attorney, but mace and a knife concealed one one’s person sounds like CCW to me. Carrying A Concealed Weapon

@daviddj: When someone visits a school, it’s not one of those major things that colleges look at, but it’s a way to express to the school that you truly are interested.

They know you’re taking them seriously, so in turn, they will take you seriously.

For example: I went to an open house at U Miami last fall, the weekend before the early decision/early action deadline. They announced that because we all visited, they would extend the November 1st deadline to November 4th so that we all had time to get our materials in. Colleges do keep a record of visits, and they probably reference it when looking at your application.

nobody gets in with a 2.95-- just look at the counselor’s guide that Lizard has posted before. my guess is that her USF re-calculated was above a 3.0, and also from what I hear summer is less competitive.

A small percentage (less than 2.5%) of last year’s enrolled USF freshmen had high school GPAs under 3.00 according to USF’s 2011-2012 common data set report.

C11. Percentage of all enrolled, degree-seeking, first-time, first-year (freshman) students who had high school grade-point averages within each of the following ranges (using 4.0 scale). Report information only for those students from whom you collected high school GPA.
Percent who had GPA of 3.75 and higher 54.7
Percent who had GPA between 3.50 and 3.74 19.2
Percent who had GPA between 3.25 and 3.49 14.8
Percent who had GPA between 3.00 and 3.24 8.9
Percent who had GPA between 2.50 and 2.99 2.2
Percent who had GPA between 2.0 and 2.49 0.2
Percent who had GPA between 1.0 and 1.99 _____
Percent who had GPA below 1.0 _____
100%

weird… maybe they are athletes, or dancers, or musicians, you know what I mean? b/c i heard that universities can make exceptions for “special talent,” like say a kid is a really great dancer, and the dance dept wants them really bad, they can get admitted with low credentials if dance says they’re worth it… that would be my guess as to the low scores, anyway!

PS-- that’s a really interesting document, thanks for sharing!! i love stats and all that :)

page 7 is VERY interesting-- they do not even consider race, alumni relation/legacy, OR level of interest-- though I’ve seen a lot of people posting as if USF does care about these things! rumors everywhere… haha
