What are my chances now?

Hello, I’m only a sophomore in highschool but I am just worried. I transferred from New York to Flordia during December, resulting in me having to catch up in all my classes and learn what they already learned in their curriculum. It was tough. And because of this, I now have an 85 in honors algebra 2. Math was never my strong suit. I’m taking all honors or AP classes and all of my grades range from a 92 to a 100. Last year all my grades were in the high 90s. Will this ruin my chances of getting into Rollins, UCF or UF? Those are my top two choices. I’m really worried because I’ve never had a grade in the 80s. I’ve been trying my best to catch up, but it’s been hard. I’m surprised I’ve kept all my other grades up. But anyway, do you think this will ruin my chances? Thank you.

It’s not a problem. Don’t let it bother you.

UF is by far the most selective and it doesn’t require all “A’s” (UF will convert the % grade to a letter grade). A few “b’s” will be fine, as long as you’re talking rigorous classes (honor/AP’s, etc.).

UF uses holistic admissions, so make sure you also stay involved in EC’s and such.

(I had just posted the info below, in the UF forum…you may want to check it and UCF’s forums, they are both fairly active).

Good Luck!

UF recalculates high school grades based on honors, AP, IB etc. classifications. The formula is as follows:

A-4 B-3 C-2 D-1 - use whole numbers only
then add 0.5 if class was honors
or add 1.0 if class was DE, AP or IB

The average GPA of admitted students is roughly 4.25, so a few B’s will not keep you out as long as you take a fair number of honors, AP/IB classes and get an A in them. They also only considered academic classes.

In addition to grades and test scores, UF places 50% emphasis on the application. Since UF does not take letters of recommendation, your essays are very important.

Yes i think if you write a great essay, keep your grades up, etc. you will be fine. UF does look at your extracurriculars too. If you need to play catch-up in math, there are some great free videos offered by Khan Academy. Also Thinkwell – their course costs money, but you can get the videos by themselves free online. Try to catch up on math, because as my math teacher used to say, “math is CUMULATIVE.”

Enjoying the Florida weather? So much nicer than New York.
