What are some good leadership/extracurricular programs to get into?

I’m talking things like National History Day, NSLC, etc. that can make a student more appealing in applications.

Extracurricular events like participating in outside competitions doesn’t necessarily make you the better applicant but it is fun and innovating to show that you are an involved student in more ways than one.

Science fair is always a great option. I know a lot of people do it but it is rewarding to participate, even if you don’t win. Put some effort into it and you could possibly advance to states from your regional level competition.

NHD is alright, just make sure you can truly connect with the theme for that current year’s project, and make sure you pick a topic you will enjoy doing.

Scholastic essay contests actually look REALLY good! If you like the topic, submit an essay or poem or short story and you will get a participation recognition even if you don’t win. It shows strong linguistic skills.

Don’t just do these competitions or events to make your application look good; pick activities you will like so you can be more successful in them.

Student Government and Yearbook. SG is good if you can get a position/community service (though you could do that on your own) and Yearbook as a publication (it can be used as identification).
However, I agree with the above poster. Do things you like, not to get into a certain college.

I’ve always heard Student Gov, Yearbook, & Community Service look best. Volunteering outside of school is always helpful. Being a president of a club shows leadership experience.
