What are some random dorm items that students wouldn't think to bring?

I’m sure that there are some random items that people don’t think to pack until after they arrive at school. What are some things that all college students should have for school/in their dorms?

Some popular choices are:

board games / cards
candles (for birthdays)
well-stocked first aid kits

check out the threads at the top…

I wouldn’t bring any candles. They’re not allowed in most dorms (fire hazzard).

Some sort of comfy fold out chair.

Not on the list, a rubber door stop.

I mean, candles aren’t technically allowed, but rules are meant to be broken. And birthdays are more special with candles.

The random items we sent (per CC) included duct tape and safety pins.

Imagine my surprise, when picking her up and suggesting she use the duct tape to secure some of the boxes, she told me she had used it all up…a while ago lol

My mom also had an umbrella for her. Go Gramma!

I second the door stop. Also a can opener, mini sewing kit and tool kit.

ping pong balls and red cups

jolly ranchers

Swiss army knife.

I don’t think of Duct Tape as a random item… more as an essential element for life ;)

BRING FOOT ODOR KILLER STUFF.

Your roommate will thank you

Sincerely,
Personal experience

costumes or stuff that can be turned into costumes. there are a lot of things with random themes that sometimes you need outfits for. be prepared.

Yeah I hear the rubber stopper is huge for the freshmen experience.

kama sutra

Two turntables and a microphone.

Agree with the umbrella recommendaiton. I don’t have an umbrella, and am always soaked when it rains.

Door stop is another good recommendation if you’re in a dorm with the doors that close behind themselves.

Costumes are a good idea.

Having a lot of cards, games, random sports stuff (basketball, football, baseball/glove/bat, golf discs, frisbee, golf clubs, etc.) is good.

Some dorms don’t allow you to use anything to prop your doors open (for safety reasons.)

I loved my lucky bamboo plant. And hang a white board in front of your door so people can leave you messages!

Personal cordless vacuum and the replacement filters. I had to pick one up during the year… lots of guests in a tiny tiny area is way more dirt then you’d ever think. I never seemed to have enough sticky hooks either. Anything up on the wall was one less thing to store.

I second the can opener! And a cheese grader, too. If you can fit it get a water filter.

Pick up extra Nyquil too.
