What are some random dorm items that students wouldn't think to bring?

I asked this question at D’s Admitted Students weekend, and the 2 things that I heard over and over were: Chairs and a fan.

When people mention “chairs”, do they mean fold out chairs for sports games, desk chairs or what ?

pans & mixing bowls for baking (you’ll probably want to make a cake or cookies or brownies at some point)

a deck of cards

And hang a white board in front of your door so people can leave you messages!

I like this idea a lot.

At a summer program I went to, I had one of these. I put interesting quotes on it every morning. It showed my mood without me actually telling anyone.

Keg Tap. You’ll always get invited to parties if you got a keg tap.

RPGs
10char

Cards ftw. And your high school yearbooks.

Folding card table to go with #10

A Dildo…=D?

I thought they were pretty universally thrown into the “you’ll never look at them” category. This is the first time I’ve ever read somebody suggest them. Usually it’s on a “don’t bring” list.

A mini-pharmacy: cough drops, tylenol, nyquil. Definitely good to have this stuff on hand already when you wake up one morning during midterms with a virus.

Some cheap flatware/silverware: you’ll probably bring home takeout occasionally, or even cook your own food. Having a couple plates and a knife/fork/spoon is a good idea.

Microwave: a lot of colleges say they’re not allowed, and a lot of colleges don’t really enforce this rule. If you can get away with it (check with some upperclassmen), a microwave is REALLY useful. Then buy packets of ramen noodles, and your roommates will love you forever.

Rugs: if the dorms don’t have carpeted floors, bring floor rugs. They make the room much cozier in the winter.

Febreeze/air fresheners: You will need this. A lot. Bring a couple bottles, because even if you keep your room immaculate, I can almost guarantee that some rowdy guys downstairs won’t, and smells travel fast.

Earplugs: These were my saving grace the year my bedroom was right next to the bathroom. Dorms are always noisy, even when you go to bed at 2am like I do. But make sure to test these out a few times at home before you head off to school, because you might not be able to hear your alarm go off.

If you have a kitchen, it may be handy to get one of those plastic racks you put your dishes on after you wash them. Most dorm kitchens don’t come with dishwasher’s so you have to clean the dishes yourself and it can get a bit wet and slippery if you just leave them on the counter to dry.

Rug(s) - most colleges’ dorm floors aren’t carpeted.

Seat Cushion - most colleges’ dorm chairs are made of wood, without any padding. A cushion will definitely make your experience much more comfortable

a hookah…

Bring some “white noise”; i.e., soft music or sounds that drown out other sounds (your ears can only focus on so much). The easiest way to do this would be to download some. It has to be something that won’t distract you, though, because that defeats the purpose.

A poker set, Trivial Pursuit, Scattergories, seemed to be a big hit.

Duct tape and 3-in-1 oil (or something similar). If it moves and is not supposed to, you need the duct tape. If it doesn’t move and is supposed to, you need the oil.

diontechristmas: i cant think of anything more essential

A strobe light.

3m command hooks/ shelves/poster strips are great because they stay on the wall, yet don’t damage the wall when you need to remove them. (Hang up those towels so they don’t become all mildewy and nasty on the floor!) Stackable milk crates have many uses. If you are lofting/ in the upper bunk a bed shelf is vital. Don’t forget extension cords/ power strips because most dorms aren’t designed for the electrical needs of 21st century students. Cleaning supplies/ paper towels are necessary because college students make messes and spill. Bring a vacuum if one isn’t provided. A laundry hamper is better than a laundry bag because it stays open. Silverware, plates, a microwaveable container, dish soap, and sponges will probably be used at least every once and a while. A chair/ an inflatable chair/ a crazy creek chair/ a bean bag chair is great for watching movies.
