UVA is my dream school, but I don’t know if I could get in since I’m OOS, so what are some other schools that are similar in academic prestige and have similar social scenes?

UNC Chapel Hill, Vanderbilt, Boston College, Michigan…

Emory, Northwestern.

Except you need a much warmer coat at Northwestern.

Boston College, Cornell, Emory, Georgetown, Michigan, Northwestern, Penn, UNC, Vanderbilt and William and Mary.

Is UCSB similar?

If you are looking for D1 athletics (i.e. football games etc that are “big time”) Emory will not be comparable to UVA.

The UCs do not have much in common with UVa. 30% of UVa’s undergraduate student population comes from OOS. At most UCs, roughly only 5% come from OOS. Also, UVa attracts many students from wealthy families, so it has more of a private school feel. UCSB also does not have Division I sports whereas UVa does. Finally, UCSB’s main academic strengths are in Engineering and the Hard Sciences whereas UVa’s main strengths are in the Social Sciences, Humanities and Business.

I think UVa and William and Mary are not at all similar and attract very different types of kids. The thing they do have in common is that they are of course both in Virginia.

I beg to disagree with sevmon. I believe W&M and UVA pull from very similar in-state applicant pools. The stats for both are extremely similar. I have a son at UVA whose backup was W&M. And a daughter who has applied to W&M, UVA, and UNC as her top choices.
We notice distinct differences in the two schools, but I’d say the applicant base is very similar.

If you were to contrast either of those too with VA TECH, I’d agree completely. They do attract different types of kids.

varocketry,We can agree to disagree then. Had one son at UVa,another at VT. Neither were interested in William and Mary(wonderful school just not a good fit). UVa is big time sports, preppy. William and Mary more LAC like, quirkier. Similarities are that they are both in Virginia, both historic campuses, and similar stats for instate kids. Very different atmospheres.Top Virginia kids may apply to both because instate tuition is so appealing but most kids are clearly a better fit for one or the other(and usually have a preference). Good luck to your daughter!

Alexandre, UCSB’s feel is posh. It has many more White than Asians too. It has lots of rich students, at least, as what I have personally seen when I visited the campus in 2006. But you were right that they differ in the strengths of some academic areas. And, like you, I cannot say they offer the same feel. Many students at UCSB bare their skin and looks very attractive. LOL… UVa students are attractive too but in a different way (leaning towards conservatism).

sevmom, W&M and UVa have very similar historic, preppy, fratty, southern, private school feels. I agree that there are differences, but by and large, they are interchangeable.

Alexandre, I appreciate your points. Yes, they both are pretty preppy, historic, but I do not think they are interchangeable and do think they attract different kinds of kids within that somewhat preppy vibe.

Miami University in Ohio, and Ohio University

Take Emory off the list.

I agree with Alex’s list especially Boston College, Emory, Georgetown, Michigan, Northwestern, UNC, Vanderbilt and William and Mary, except I would take off the Ivies, which are a step higher than UVA.

Also agree with the running list but if the OP is looking for a vibrant greek life as part of the “similar to UVA” vibe - remove BC and Georgetown.

I don’t think Miami Ohio is anything like UVA. The similarity ends with it being a state school.

When you say Penn, do you mean UPenn or Penn State?

^the University of Pennsylvania
