Would Duke be similar?

sandra_ny2011,I think a kid who liked UVa may very well like Duke. Duke was the school my UVa son really considered also applying to before he decided to do ED in '05. Of the schools being mentioned, UNC, Vanderbilt would also potentially be good fits. Maybe Michigan, Penn.

When looking at schools a few years back, I thought the University of Georgia had many comparable factors with UVA, esp regarding the social scene and its atmosphere of being a southern university in a beautiful smaller town. Although it isn’t ranked quite as high overall academically, many of its programs (and its Honors College) are comparable.

UNC also came right to mind. I concur with sevmom’s feelings on the WM and UVA comparison. Other than the comparative SAT, GPA stats, I just don’t see the similarities in the feel of those schools overall. Good luck to the OP with his/her choice!

Agree about Georgia,KandKsmom,Son had a good friend who was not quite competitive for UVa or would have applied there but was drawn to the University of Georgia and had a great 4 years there. Great college town and sports.

OP is looking for schools that are easier to get in than UVa OOS with similar social scene. A lot of the schools being discussed here - UPenn, Duke, Georgetown, UNC OOS, Northwestern, Cornell, etc. are not easier to get in than UVa. MiamiOH is.

UNC, UCLA, Penn State are similar to UVirginia in many ways. W&M has very little in common except for geography and Jefferson.

Wake Forest is modeled in several ways after UVA. The main quad:

intentionally borrows architecturally from the “Academical Village”:
http://images.businessweek.com/ss/09/04/0410_bschool_special_undergrad/image/002_uva.jpg
and the curricular focus there is often described as “Jeffersonian.” It has a similar preppy, Greekish vibe, and is a rival in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The median SATs and acceptance rates are similar, and this year the two schools are tied at #25 in the US News rankings.

Without a doubt, the college that is most similar to UVa, while being less selective, is the University of Delaware.

UDel is a similar town, has a similar grounds/campus, is of closely similar size, consumes a similar amount of alcohol, has a similar student population (minus some of the southerners), has a high percentage of out of state students, and offers very similar academic programs.

I still don’t agree that Miami-Ohio compares even with regard to social scene. Yes, it is a big drinking school, but that’s about it for similarities. I would go with UGA. Miami is missing the big athletic scene, too. Miami also lacks the presence of all the strong grad and professional programs.

My first thoughts were Wake, Duke, and UNC.

This is why it would be good if the OP actually stated what they like about UVA that they want to see at other schools. I wouldn’t even consider that for undergrad and MomofWC feels it’s important.

I’m not saying it should be important, necessarily, but it does give the school a totally different feel.

I’m more looking for undergrad, but if a college has a good grad program, its always a plus. I like everything about UVA, not tiny specific details. The whole feel of it, the atmosphere, the perfect mix of good academics and a lively social scene. Wake Forest seems like another school I’d be interested in.

anyone???

Washington and Lee if it isn’t too small, Wake Forest, Vandy, and UNC for the same academic range. I strongly disagree with whoever said Boston College, Miami, and W&M.

Schools that have similar atmospheres but are less academically renown are Clemson, James Madison, and Georgia.

Clemson has a similar atmosphere as UVA, maybe less “preppier” and definitely not even close academically.

I think the schools already named is a fairly exhaustive list of similar schools, even though a couple, at least in my mind, are a bit of stretch. I do think Wake, Duke, UNC, and Vandy are probably the closest matches among those already named.

As far as the UVA W&M comparison, my kids also applied to both places, as well as their friends with similar stats, but the reasons had little to do with the schools being similar in atmoshpere. Obviously, they are both wonderful places in their own way, but definitely not interchangable in terms of the OP’s suggested criteria.

anywhere else?

Cavaleirssss

alexis4…my D actually IS a first year at UVA from OOS. She was wanting a school that was academically reputable and highly ranked, but she also was wanting a lively social scene. It sounds like the two of you are similar. Schools that she applied to that met this criteria: UVa, UNC, Northwestern, BC, Vanderbilt, Wake, Cornell, and UPenn. She applied to others (reaches/safeties); however, they probably don’t meet your criteria. She’s very happy with her decision to attend UVa. Good luck!
