…have enthusiasm for their subject
…take interest in their students as people
…are patient when students are trying to grasp a concept (but don’t put up with truly dumb questions)
…pay at least SOME attention to fashion and pop culture
…appreciate a job well done
…have a sense of humor (not necessarily cracking jokes all the time, though)
…make themselves equals with their students (OK, they don’t make themselves jerks, but they don’t have ego issues either)

Share the attributes of YOUR best teachers!

all of that describes my favorite teahcer. Physics teacher named Mr. Bell! awesome awesome. he even won this one of hte best teachers in texas award(only 12 get it a year I think). And he’s meeting the governor( in a suit the sutdents bought him )I’d have to add:
really knows his subject well
can tolerate questions and answer them extrmely well ( make neither him or you look like an idiotic)
encourage discussion
doesn’t mind going off on wild tangents. We fired a ballista once in class!
willing to put in the time to help students (he’s there to 5:30 - 6:00 nearly everyday)

I hate teachers that give stupid assignments, and I like teachers that facillitate class discussion, so you’re not just copying notes from the board the whole time.

Knows the material well
Enjoys teaching their subject
Doesn’t make up or B.S. answers to questions they don’t know (an I don’t know is always better than something wrong)

a girl…and shes hot…thats about all i can ask for because teachers suck
BTW “those who cant do teach, and those who cant teach become gym teachers”
-Woody Allen…SO TRUE!!!

My AP Bio teacher was the epitome of what all teachers should be like.

Beginning of the year, he gave us a big packet of notes, and said “memorize this, u’ll get a 5 on the AP test”. They were those fill in the blank kinds of things, so everday in class, we’d just sit around and talk while he put up pg after pg of notes on the overhead, and we just filled in the blanks.

As a result, the students that actually wanted a good grade got it, and the ones that didn’t care failed. After the AP test we just watched movies in class. Hooray for good teaching.

Again, “those who cant do teach”…stop idolizing teachers because there is nothing special about them, theyre not particularly smart or wise they just know their subject well, there just regular people who got B’s and 1200 SAt scores in HS (with the exception of a few, some are smart and well rounded) MOST SUCK

My physics teacher has the same qualities as Vtran31’s. Although I don’t get the best grade in the class, I enjoy having an awesome teacher who can teach.

You can tell my favourite teacher’s in a good mood when he starts quoting Woody Allen (or stealing Airheads or joking with his wife or finding sneaky ways to raise money so that our TKD class can have t-shirts). He’s actually a pretty brilliant guy. He also thinks teaching is like a spiritual mission. And it’s quite possible to talk to him for hours about absolutely everything.

Lock, sure there are teachers who are just cardboard props to give the idea that this is a proper class (while the students study out of the book, or worse, don’t). There are also teachers who are teachers in the proper sense, and hey, teach. They’re smart, they’re wise, they’re actual people you can talk to… It sucks that you haven’t had this type of teacher, but they do exist.

i have…and your absolutely right Limon…BUT…i find, with many teachers(its scary), that they are all about Ego…they just use the teaching job as a method of control and power rather than a way to teach and build a future like they should…but yes…i have had 2 teachers who i can honestly say are great teachers and are very much smarter and wiser than most people.

Your absolutely right Limon…BUT…i find, with many teachers(its scary), that they are all about Ego…they just use their teaching job as a method of control and power rather than a way to teach, mentor, and build a future like they should…but yes…i have had 2 teachers who i can honestly say are great teachers and are very much smarter and wiser than most people.

sigh Since we’re on block scheduling (4 classes a semester) we get new classes every semester…so this semester I’m taking Gifted Chemistry…my teacher is CRAZY…and not in a good way…she literally spent 10 minutes on monday talking about a girl that got gum on her jacket and had to use peanut butter to get it out…then she came back in the room 5 minutes later and asked “Did I tell you all about the girl with the gum on her jacket?”…we were all sitting there in shock…and you should see the board…it’s cluttered with information and to make it worse she has very sloppy handwriting…she also gets an attitude whenever you ask her a question…

Student: “So exactly how are we supposed to do the outline”
Teacher: “Didn’t I tell you all of that yesterday?!”
Student: “Actually, you didn’t”
Teacher: “Don’t play games with me son…blah blah blah rant rant rant…”

Class mumbling in background about getting a schedule change

I’ve heard horror stories about her from her past students…

Oh ms. coyle, how awesome you are. Ms. coyle is humorous, and very intelligent. She tries to get the class to actually learn and understand the material. She makes students realize that they need math to survive. I talk to her about issues other than school, and she can help in a variety of situations. I am sooo inviting her to my med school graduation in 9-10 years.

Brings the subject alive with their enthusiasm and intelligence.
Is Encouraging and Supporting.
Fun personality.
Teaches Well.
Tries their best to help students when struggling.
Doesn’t emphasize rote memorization, homework, and test and quizzes,
but instead class discussions, critical thinking, effectively expressing your
ideas, and good writing skills.
Pays attention to you and focuses on the individual not just a class of kids.
