What are the FAFSA-Only private schools?

Hey everybody,

Can you recommend me some good private schools that are FAFSA-Only and generous with their FA? I know there’s a federal law requiring elite private schools requiring to use CSS but that’s not what I’d prefer - one, it’s too nosy for my financial situation (EFC 0), two, it’s an additional expense to submit it, three, most of them require NCP info. If anybody knows some good private schools or LACs, please recommend them to me here. Thanks in advance!

Well, here is the list that participate in Profile. https://profile.collegeboard.org/profile/ppi/participatingInstitutions.aspx You can probably look for schools that aren’t on that list. It’s not fool proof though because some schools use their own forms.

What are you talking about?

@BelknapPoint, there was an article over it from Forbes, here’s the link -

https://www.google.co.in/amp/s/www.forbes.com/sites/troyonink/2017/01/08/2017-guide-to-college-financial-aid-the-fafsa-and-css-profile/amp/

Did I misunderstood something?

What part of that Forbes article says that there is a federal law requiring elite private schools to use CSS Profile?

@BelknapPoint, use the ‘Find’ or CTRL+F option in your browser and type in ‘elite’. The 4th result is the one you’re looking for.

OP, you misread that. The FAFSA is required, but not the CSS Profile.

ETA: many elite privates do require the CSS profile, but there is no federal law that mandates that to be a requirement.

It’s not well written

The Federal Law only applies to the first part of that statement - completing FAFSA. The Profile use is a decision for the college alone.

You misread the statement. It says

The federal law only relates to the FAFSA.

Cooper Union

@patsmom, @ErinsDad, @suzy100, @BelknapPoint, seems it’s not well written, leading to my misunderstanding. Thanks for rectifying the error.

Most schools that give good aid are going to use the CSS and require NCP info somehow. They aren’t going to give you an education worth $250K without asking a lot of questions about your finances. So too bad if it feels too intrusive. You are asking for a big gift. They want proof you can’t actually pay yourself. That seems fair to me. And $16/school is a small investment for the possible return.

Do you have grounds to ask for a NCP waiver? If not, I think UChicago maybe stopped asking for NCP data recently. Maybe Vanderbilt or Dartmouth, I seem to remember at least at some point recently they weren’t asking.

Yes, you did.

@jimbocharlie, Cooper Union, while being a FAFSA only private school, isn’t financially viable.

@intparent, I’m going to file for getting NCP info waived at the some colleges, just trying. I’m not sure and pretty pessimistic about success odds at it. Dartmouth requires NCP info.

You will want to make sure you are seeking out colleges you can afford if you don’t get the waivers.

@GuessME5 why? It’s need blind, if your EFC os $0 you should qualify for quite a bit of financial aid unless you are an international student.

@intparent, sure. One of my thread has my list of affordable schools. For NCP waiver, I’ll try some of these (not all) - Williams, Amherst, WUSTL, USC, Lehigh, Brandeis, U Rochester, Villanova and some top LACs.

@jimbocharlie, don’t know about that but put off after running it’s NPC.

@GuessME5 their NPC can be way off, check out their website with the examples of financial aid given:
