I am going to University at Buffalo during Fall 2011. I choose to stay in off-campus apartment and will be staying there approximately for only 4 month. However, from my understanding the lease agreement is usually for 1 year (correct me if i am wrong). Therefore, i am whethering what are penalties i might have to deal with if i break the lease early?

That info will be in the lease…it varies by landlord so pull it out and read it!

I did run through all the details on the website of different off- campus apartments namely - Chestnut ridge, Sweethome etc. , however, they did not mention anything about the lease. Can i know where i can get the information?

You should have a copy of the lease or at least given a copy.
You can go to the manager’s office and request a copy of the one you signed.

I’d assume they are just going to charge you the remainder of your lease.

Do you mean you’re going to live off campus NEXT Fall (2012)? If so, ask/call the leasing offices your question. It really does vary by landlord and it will be spelled out in the lease you sign. If you only want a 4-month commitment you’d be better off making that clear when you make appointments to view properties.

Or sublease from someone doing study abroad for Fall term… or if you have a lease, see if you can sublease to an incoming student, back from study abroad or transferring in.
