Peruvian thread was hilarious. I have a 900 Sat but I know I will get over 1500 next time. I know how.
@STEM2017 - why in post #2479 are you referencing post #2479?
Annoying are the threads where the OP brazenly announces a very high income and savings but plans to stash as much money in a way that he hopes will get his kid(s) need based aid.
I know this has been said before, but threads where HS students “know” everything about admissions.
^^^^^Wow!!! Some people really have no shame.
@jym626 I was simply referring to the popularity of this thread…having 2479 posts. Apologies if that wasn’t clear.
@roethlisburger, your * a few posts up, hilarious.
I enjoy the ones where posters claim to have dysgraphia , and multiple other learning disabilities who when questioned are quite articulate when angry, but all other posts are Yoda speak.
Ahh, @STEM2017. That zipped right over my head, LOL. Guess I was still thinking with amazement about the “I am going to try to be “broke” with a million in retirement so I can try to get need based aid” stuff. Annoying is a kind descriptor for that strategy.
But if Peruvian OP were a broke millionaire, would Harvard admit him into their being a billionaire major? Or should this be in the chance me thread?
Now that i think of it Peruvian thread reminded of Trump lol
Kids who post things like, “I spent two months writing the essays for five different (merit) scholarships at Elite U and didn’t make finalist for even one! This is ridiculous! I will choose one of my other superior/cheaper/better fit anyway options now that I see how little Elite U thinks of me.”
Be realistic. Elite U does offer a relative handful of highly competitive merit awards. But from the kid’s posted stats, she was a good but not stellar candidate. She took a chance, which is great. But don’t get furious when you’re not chosen.
OTOH, I love when kids (or parents) who didn’t move on in merit competitions graciously post things like, “I didn’t get a letter, but congratulations to those that did.”
Threads with strikingly similar details posted a month apart by different users with similar names – those are annoying.
Threads that get tiresome at about page 20 but go on for 200 more pages and I continue to get dozens and dozens of notifications because I posted something inane on page 2 and I have that box checked to notify me when people comment on discussions I’ve participated in but I don’t want to uncheck that box because it’s useful for the interesting discussions that I’m too lazy to bookmark. Those threads really rot my petunia.
@dunboyne You have the option to bookmark specific threads you are interested in rather than all that you comment in. It will save your petunia.
@doschicos You do, but it’s a system that requires you to forgo using bookmarks for any other purpose. In the end, an “unfollow thread” button would be much better and something easily implemented by most forum software. Not sure if it’s possible in this software, but I am sure there is an alternative that allows for both automatic tracking of any thread you post in and the option to stop tracking in it. That’s certainly an area of frustration for me.
Call me confused. I bookmark any thread I’m interested in, whether or not I posted (usually those I have.) I do not get notified each time someone posts, that’s set “off.” I dont want the nagging emails, New post! New post! New post! I just check My Bookmarks for activity. It shows if there has been an add.
When I’m done with a thread, I “unfollow” by unbookmarking. A lot easier than getting those 200 “update” emails, clicking, reading them, deleting them, before even getting to what was posted.
I’m with @lookingforward as it relates to confusion. I bookmark threads I like. I don’t get any emails or notifications. When I want to see if anyone has posted to a bookmarked thread, I go to the top left of this page and click on “My Bookmarks.” Any thread with new posts will be in boldface type. Click on the thread, and it will take you to the newest posts.
@PengsPhils, What do you mean by this?
I agree, bookmarking would accomplish what @Dunboyne is trying to do.
I too use booksmarks as lookingforward describes and agree it will accomplish what Dunboyne is trying to do. Though I rarely unbookmark, unless I truly have no more interest… Most threads die on their own, so it’s always startling when something pops back up to the top of my bookmark list that’s a year old!
Yep, I bookmark and have notifications turned off unless someone tags me. Then I just click on “my bookmarks” and read from the last point. It’s fairly pain free.
