@thumper1,
Isn’t that why kids ask dad when mom says “no”.
Legacy kids’ threads with very sub-par credential asking for Ivy league chances
Threads where the OP refers to all colleges across their state border as OOS, rather than just the public colleges where they’re not entitled to lower, in-state tuition rates.
Kids who get into an OOS (^public) with a modest EFC and don’t understand why the FAFSA-only school won’t recognize their awesomeness and meet full need +.
the grammar nazi threads (although they do give people a place to channel their energies)
@saintfan, “Nazi” is capitalized
GMTplus7
@saintfan, I am also aggravated by the grammar Nazi’s. And the spelling Nazi’s. Did I get the punctuation right on the Nazi’s part?
While of course incorrect grammar or spelling takes away from the post, who really cares?
Nope, as it’s “Nazis” (plural), not possessive. “Nazi’s” is the possessive form of one particular Nazi.
The Nazis really annoy me! That particular Nazi’s uniform is dirty!
Well, I guess I can’t call you one of the punctuation Nazis, as you were merely answering my question!
I decided that since they aren’t actual Nazis I would use a lower case to denote a general attitude rather than a formal affiliation with the Nazi party (should the ‘P’ be capitalized as well, and should I have let the P stand alone just now without the added flourish for emphasis?)
LOL. There’s a grammar thread going on right now. I’ve been teaching freshman composition since 1986. You might think I would be right at home in a thread like that; in fact, the ignorant smugness makes me cringe. I threw away my jackboots and armbands a long, long time ago.
As someone who spends her life up to her elbows in grammar issues (teaching composition), I agree. No one expects everything on an online discussion site to be revised and proofread–it’s talk, basically. Would you show up at a dinner party and correct others’ speech?
There is always a grammar thread. One dies and another rises up to take its place.
Everyone has their minor pet peeves. Another person’s pet peeves may seem smug and superior to someone else.
No I wouldn’t. Nor would I correct their table manners. But I’d certainly be disgusted by some of them.
Why shouldn’t we care about the proper use of the English language? We want our kids to be educated and well spoken. What’s wrong with pointing out some of the errors in a non confrontational manner so that maybe they will learn? It’s rarely done on the thread where someone has used a word incorrectly. It’s on a thread where those of us who care and are interested can discuss it. Those who think it doesn’t matter are free to ignore those threads.
. . . a nice feature which a gave a nod to in my first post (#405)
Of course, that really is true for any type of thread. If you don’t like chance threads they are easily avoided as well.
I’m sick of OPs in a thread that start off with only a link, and maybe one sentence.
I don’t know about the rest of you, but I do NOT open outside links posted on this site.
Although correct grammar usage is important to me, I also dislike the smug grammar threads. The current one was started when another thread had the error in its title. I think that’s rude and unkind.
Isn’t this the “what kinds of threads annoy you?” thread? Obviously, not everyone agrees, or there would be no annoying threads. The “just ignore it” comments could apply to every single thread listed here.
