@lknomad I just need to barge in to say that is the cutest puppy photo you have there!!
@doschicos Thanks! He is my albino beagle mixed with something rescue! He is afraid of everything and is very weird. But we love him!
I just had to reply to that thread…
I had to reply, as well… mainly because I’ve always heard NW to be everything he hated about UMich. Then someone gave the Greek stats for the schools in question, and apparently NW is even more so!
eta: Want to clarify that I’ve only heard those things about NW, and also taken with a grain of salt, though I’m sure some of it is true… NW also is the school kids around here aspire to… And I’d imagine it’s also a big enough school where there are all types of students…
Anything having to do with anything other than hs and college info. We live in a world of 24/7 news. We ALL see it. I come here for info, advice and camaraderie about hs and college issue for my kids. I can get news from the world elsewhere.
Interesting, @cardinal2020mom , I sometimes find out about major news here first!
@OHMomof2 My kids must be right. I am too connected via tv and internet. Therefore, I get it from everywhere.
But the very purpose of the Parent Cafe (on which you are posting) is to provide a forum for anything and everything, particularly subjects which have zero to do with academics.
It is my first on here. Found it interesting and wanted to respond. Otherwise, I keep it to the schooling subject.
Ready for another annoying “chance me” thread?
One where a high school student chances another student for Harvey Mudd — as a safety school. Sigh.

When brilliant adult posters give great advice after great advice to a young poster and they continuously respond that everything recommended will not work. Why did they ask the question in the first place?
Anything that has “I’m posting this for a friend or relative”.
Tell them to open their own CC accounts. It’s pretty easy!
HS junior with no standardized test scores yet and a GPA of 2.3 who
“feels Harvard would provide the best education for my specific needs; the students and teachers are passionate, the academic resources are unlimited, the experience is extraordinarily unique and your motivations and dreams are acknowledged and respected.”
I am all for empowering the ute of today to achieve their dreams but sometimes I get tired of how often this scenario pops up. (Apologies to My Cousin Vinny.)
@NorthernMom61 … And then one 18 year old pipes in and validates everything the poster says and the two bond over how the adults on the thread don’t know anything…
Another thread stating: I think Harvard is the best school for me because << list of generic attributes found at scores of other schools >>
Honestly though, isn’t it difficult to find particular reasons to like top schools?
I’ve already mentioned this, but threads where people post their basic stats (usually at least average) and ask if they can get into college, but without a mention of what kind of college and other relevant information (cc, state school, private, “elite,” , the financial situation, the state their from, etc.) Of course the ubiquitous UAlabama can be parachuted in to save the day, but it would be nice if people could be a little more specific from the start.
Lots of these posts are hitting very close to home, can’t help but to feel guilty for the users who’ve read my past threads LOL. I’ll use these as suggestions on what NOT to post, even though it’s mostly just common sense
-Any post bashing a University/College for being ‘bad’ based on 1 or 2 personal anecdotes.
-OP creates a chance thread with stats that haven’t been achieved yet but assumes it will happen because he will ‘work harder’ this term. (im very guilty for this one :)) )
Just when it looks as though this thread is flagging:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/new-york-university/1864538-straight-girl-at-nyu-nyu-stereotypes.html#latest
- Horribly dismissive of gay students
- Thread title all in capital letters as if it there was some urgency
- Did she not visit or research before applying?
- Should gay students scream, "Help is Whatsamatta U all straight?"
^^^^What I find more annoying about that thread was the poster holding himself up as some kind of authority and making all kinds of derogatory comments about the student body based on visiting a friend who goes there and “talking to a few people.”
