Ones where someone asks about a school, or about chances, etc.
And then a parent comes along and says “Well, my kid cured 20 different kinds of cancer, and got a 2400, and got a 36, and has a 5.0 GPA, and invented hyperspace, etc., etc., etc… so I guess you have an okay chance.” (or something along those lines)
Like seriously. Go somewhere else to brag about your kid. You’re not helping.
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19366966/#Comment_19366966 This one isn’t really annoying, and we’re sure it’s a fake post, but it is a delightful parody of chance me threads…
(Read the original post.)
^^and yet some people took it seriously. Lol.
exactly @Nrdsb4 - how can you read that & seriously add a post questioning the stat???
I don’t think anybody took it seriously, looks they just joined the complete absurdity of it all and said the poster was fit with the “stats.” The questions were to show its fakeness.
@albert69, I don’t think so. Some people don’t get irony/sarcasm/satire. I see it all the time here.
Looks like it’s been deleted. The link is dead.
The thread where the poster says they have to choose between APUSH and honors English, and even though they like history they messed up really badly and got a B+ in the prerequisite for APUSH one quarter, so maybe that’s just “not meant to be”.
Since so many people here post about “Chance me” threads, I thought I’d share a scenario I have seen multiple times.
OP: Hey everybody. I’m a senior applying to top colleges this year and I would like it if you chance me. I’ll chance back! Here are my stats:
SAT I : 2320 (Retaking)

- Founder of Basket Weaving Club
-Founder of 4 other clubs
Applying to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, MIT, Stanford and Columbia, UPenn, Brown, Cornell and Vanderbilt.
** Poster 1/b: HYPS: reach. MIT: less of a reach since you did research there. Columbia: low reach. The rest: safeties.
Overall, you look like you have a strong chance! Chance me back provides link
** Poster 2 /b: Everything looks fine. I don’t think you need to retake your SAT’s. Focus well on the subjects you are taking right now and keep your GPA high. Your stats look solid, but admission to the kind of schools you have listed above is a crapshoot for anybody. No one can realistically predict your chances of getting in. You may want to add a few safety colleges to your list. Relax and enjoy the rest of your senior year!
** OP**: Thanks, @Poster2! Anyone else?
time passes
** OP **: Bump 10 char
** Poster 3/b: Well, OP, I think you may need to retake your SAT’s, as Harvard and the like routinely turn away people with 2400s. Your SAT Math II looks low as well. Your extracurriculars are fine, but nothing special. I think you better start looking at school that are more your caliber (i.e lower level).
** OP **: @Poster3 I did research at MIT and I have helped create a synthetic vaccine for HIV. I’m already planning on retaking my SAT’s. BTW, what do you mean by “lower schools”?
** Poster 3 **: shrugs I get it, but research at MIT is far from impressive at colleges like HYP. And I meant you might want to start looking at community colleges.
** OP **: Excuse me, but you don’t know anything about me. I won 4 gold championships in my sports’ and have the highest GPA of my grade. I also just checked the common data sets for all the schools, and my scores and grades are within range. And no one can predict the admissions outcomes. For example, I had a friend who got in to Stanford and Harvard with a 1800 SAT and 3.5 GPA.
** Poster 3 **:
AHA! Then why did you ask? smirk
** OP **: …
** OP **: Anyone else willing to chance me?
** Poster 3 **: I don’t understand what else you are looking for. You gave us your objective criteria and we took the time to evaluate it and respond to you. You clearly are not HYP material. Sorry to burst your bubble smirk widens
MEANWHILE IN MODERATORS LAND…
** MODERATOR **: Think we should step in and close the thread?
MOD 2: * Nah. I’m enjoying myself my too much. You? *
** MODERATOR **: Me too. Maybe we should sticky it, just 'cause.
Threads about fullpay parents pushing their kids to apply to bling schools for vanity’s sake, then reneging on paying for the school when kid actually gets admitted.
Threads were people have already got admitted into an EA/ED school… but then decide to continue applying for others regular, even though they already know where they’re going.
@Merppity - I agree with your concern with ED, but there is no expected commitment with EA so it makes sense to continue applying and shopping for better FA offers.
Are you serious??? Whta’s the point?!
Was this directed at me? I don’t understand your question. Are you asking what’s the point in applying RD if you have EA decisions? I already addressed that…to continue to determine the best FA package (as well as other considerations such as fit and academics). An EA school is NOT necessarily a persons first choice school. Unlike ED there is no commitment required.
(Now if they student feels 100% sure they are going to their EA school, then there isn’t really a point other than perhaps “bragging rights”. But even if they think they are 100% sure, there is nothing wrong with keeping their options open. I’m sure there are plenty of kids that change their mind.)
Sorry, I don’t want to derail the point of this thread which is what are the most annoying threads…but I wanted to answer the question I felt was directed at me.
Back to your regularly scheduled program…
@ClaremontMom oh no that was for @Merppity regarding people who got ED but applies for RD
@paul2752 Oh! Ok…I the point for them (ED)—which I am NOT condoning in any way—is probably either curiosity/bragging rights, or because they want to back out of ED if something “better” comes along. But that’s been discussed quite a bit on another thread recently.
@ClaremontMom @paul2752 Ah, yeah, I wasn’t specific enough. I meant people that get into really prestigious schools or their first choice for EA or ED, then decide to keep applying for schools (or don’t withdraw) simply because they want the bragging rights, or they want to get out of their ED contract by claiming financial issues. It’s seriously a horrible thing to do, cause they’re really just taking spots away from people that would actually go to those schools.
Comments where someone bad mouths a school and lists all that is wrong with it and urges others not to attend. In looking at their posting history it was their dream school until they got rejected.
Threads where the OP complains no FA was awarded and they really cannot afford it, but should they go anyway?
Any post that uses the words “it’s a crapshoot for anyone”.
