What are the most annoying threads on CC?

The thread in which a parent repeatedly invokes God while disparaging and belittling the accomplishment of their child’s classmate, who got into a school that the parent’s child did not.

The dramatic thread titles with “rejected everywhere” when in fact they had several admissions, to several very fine schools.

This is a good one…poor fellow. Not sure how one copes with such disappointment!

@doschicos Can you sum that one up? It can’t be reached anymore.

^^An aunt whose oldest child is 11 wrote that her 2380 SAT white Christian niece was denied admission from her top schools while Jewish people were admitted. Over and over she kept saying the words “white” and “Christian” throughout her lengthy rambling post. I had never seen a thing like that on CC.

@awesomepolyglot

I find myself annoyed reading through lengthy threads about a particular subject and no one mentions school names. I just spent 10 minutes reading about a school that “offers” France study-abroad for incoming freshman and with the exception of one poster there seems to be a lack of transparency in the discussion. Why? I get when someone is talking about the schools they apply to and hope to attend and are just gathering information but when you post about a specific issue within a specific school, why no transparency? How does this help other students considering the school for themselves? And then you have the responses, again all very generic. Its not bad-mouthing the particular school if the facts are just that, facts, so why not spill? FWIW, in my D’s process of applying to schools, many on her list had first semesters abroad as a possibility with acceptance: Colby, Middlebury, and Skidmore to name a few. D was not open to this alternative and, in the end, wasn’t put in that position to chose or not chose a school because of it.

Oh, trust me, there have been worse.

Another NYU thread where parents are contemplating draining their 401k. Who cares if you have to eat catfood in old age-- it’s for NYU!

@NEPatsGirl --I read that thread and was thinking that too, but on the other hand, if he does go, that makes him one out of twenty students, and probably identifiable to some people. I would be reticent to let that happen, though I think it basically is, as it became clearer what school it was.

Posts that read, “Can I get into the Ivies? I got a REALLY bad SAT score (2300, but I’m going to retake until it’s at least 2380) and my GPA isn’t the best–3.9999 UW because I got an A- once.”

(Specific reference)

OP - only applied to prestigious schools and UArk. Only got into UArk. (Stellar stats, ECs, etc.) Also, Asian American.

Another poster - sympathizing with him about how terrible it is to be an Asian American with how unfair it is in college admissions, etc. This poster had gotten accepted to Princeton… :-?

What is with these people who think they are entitled to go to top college?

I do have compassion for the teenagers, most of whom have no clue how hard you have to work to make mega after-tax $$$ to fork over to NYU. They just don’t have much point of reference.

Ha, my 3 biggest pet peeves:

  1. Not having the $ talk with your kids. It generally falls on the parents to run price calculators. I still find people expecting to get merit money at U's that are only need based.
  2. Kids like the Ark boy who applied to just Ivies, and state. Did no one advice him? There are so many colleges in top 50 or 75 where he probably would be admitted. It shows such naive thinking.
  3. Kids who earn 600 on each SAT section, then wonder why they didn't get into the elite schools. Why haven't you read CC at all? Your ECs are good, but no better than others with 700+ scores.

Oh yeah, putting down CCs, which in CA and FL are good, and save alot of $. In FL, the CCs are often on campus with the U’s, and people transfer after 2 years.

Not exactly a pet peeve, but families don’t look into school policies on drinking/other drug use. At some places, one beer can mean suspension. Colleagues may not bring a drunk student to the medical center to avoid his expulsion or suspension.

Then there is this doozy: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1877678-ed-dilemma-need-help.html#latest

Oh no. ^^ Not another one. 8-| Here we go again.

rolls eyes

Another gem “I do believe I deserved to go to these schools” (all elites" and says “ew” to his Emory waitlist and a similar disparaging comment to the Columbia WL. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/1877301-rejected-everywhere-what-did-i-do-wrong-p1.html

and “the reading might not be as high as I would like but I’m pretty sure my high math and writing would counteract that”

Was this an April fools joke?

Sometimes I like to come to this thread just to see if there are any threads I need to go moderate.
