What are the most annoying threads on CC?

Tom, sometimes I wish we had a few hours, every so often, when we could say it.

No. I think that the descriptives are good enough. If one can;t figure out the referenced thread, and you really want to see it, I’m sure the person describing it will be happy to PM you the link.

Sorry if I’m really behind, but when was the links rule out into place?

It’s not set in stone, but since CC really is supposed to be a welcoming community, members should not pour salt in the wounds of the OP by linking the thread.

I know it’s already been referenced (and terminated), but that one thread with the kid who couldn’t understand why any high school student would work rather than doing summer programs was something else.

“What do you mean 401k contributions are income for EFC calculations?!”

That, like “what to you mean, private high school tuition for my siblings doesn’t count?”

A current thread where a BC acceptee did not get as much financial aid as he deserves and is demanding that they “give me what is mine”.

^^I really want to read that one.

^^Check the Latest Posts. Not allowed to post a link.

^ He backed down, is trying to understand. A bit.

This is obviously repetitive to many of the comments above, but pretty much any treads ranting about the F word – Fair – whether it’s merit aid (if schools don’t offer it), admission decisions (but snowflake got 20 points higher on her SAT), need-based aid (the ever ridiculous “why should I subsidize poor kids”), etc. Bad enough when the kids do it (see BC acceptee thread above), but the parents take the cake. Most recently, a post that it was not fair to her high stat daughter that some other students were “advantaged to be disadvantaged.” This was in the context of going to terrible schools and living in poverty (not just the typical URM rant, although that was in there too). I’ve seen other posters talking about how “lucky” impoverished kids are.

Any thread where a student or parent is disgruntled because their kid got Work Study or a Direct Loan and not all grant money.

Really? You don’t want to work?

^^ Not to mention a lot of kids would give their eye teeth for a work study job! They tend to be the best on campus and often provide real, practical experience one can later put on a resume!

Exactly, Lucie. My kid would have taken that work study offer off their hands, thank you!

To be fair, the reason some are distressed about work-study is because it means that amount of money must be paid up front and isn’t available for tuition, books, etc., at least not the first semester.

That said, my D got a couple of outside scholarships that the school applied to her work-study award, so she didn’t get WS. And while it’s nice to have more time for studying, clubs, etc., it’s also harder to get a job in areas where WS students are preferred.

Someone posts a bit of a whine about how tough they have it, with the only school that came in affordable for their family to pay for it being the state school and all, a state school would be below their needs, isn’t it horrible how tough it is for a high-income family what with getting no financial aid and all, and so forth.

That’s not annoying for CC, except insofar as it’s annoyingly common here. In fact, this thread had a redeeming moment, as the OP got smacked down a bit for their entitlement and appeared to have learned their lesson.

So they come back a bit later, say they’ve decided on a school, it’s affordable for the family, the OP is looking forward to going there, and everything’s happy.

Cue the congratulations all around…

…and then the OP says “I just want to point out in general that people with financial wealth may not have always had it easy” and goes on a mini-rant about how their wealthy family has to scrimp to remain financially stable (with “stable” clearly meaning “wealthy”).

Will they never learn?

^^As soon as I saw that thread I knew it was destined to be mentioned here :))

oh please, give me a search term!

^^ Confidential to @garland: that particular OP is in a “tough financial situation” (wink, wink)

Mods, OK if posters give hints?
