What are the people like?

I'm thinking of applying to UVa, and wanted to know what the student life and the students themselves are like... are they super-nerds, jocks, or somewhere in between? Or are there people of every type? Do the students tend to form cliques? Any information would be really helpful :D

There are about 14,000 undergraduate students at UVa. There is a little bit of everything here.

There are over 700 student organizations. Obviously, students in some clubs form tight bonds and that could be deemed cliquey. I think it's only natural that people seek small, supportive groups when they are in a university environment. :)

Do a little searching...the current students and alumni who frequent this board have answered questions like these before.

We're snotty, rich, stuck-up southern kids. The northern kids try to come in every once in awhile too, but most of them are even richer and they sometimes have nicer winter clothes.

Kidding ;) Super-nerds? CHECK (everyone at UVa is nerdy in their own way). Jocks? CHECK. Somewhere in-between? CHECK.

Any college is full of various people. What most comment about UVa and schools UVa's size is that it's small enough that you don't feel overwhelmed and everyone there is smart, well-rounded individuals looking for a good education. At the same time, with 13K undergrads, everyone can find at least one person with their same interests. Most of the time, you're surrounded by people you get along with or share interests with. Lots and lots of student clubs/organizations to get involved with too. I don't think there's really "cliques" per-say, but people tend to gravitate towards those they feel comfortable with and form their group of friends. At the same time, you often have multiple groups of friends. I had friends in my major, roommates, people I met through other friends, friends from summer internships, etc etc. What's great about college is that you meet a few people, then they introduce you to others, and then you meet others, and it's a giant snowball effect. With the size of UVa, you're bound to run into most of them often.

Don't worry about the student population at UVa, every Hoo loves another Hoo, and those that share similar interests quickly find each other :)

Alright, thanks for the reply :D
Sounds like what I'd want.... thats good :)
