Pondering whether I should do a day trip to get a hug from my kid ( I miss my son’s hugs ) in Pittsburgh. I’m in Delaware so 4 hrs 38 min is what it says on MAPS. It used to be 5 hrs, but I found a new route last weekend. So… Some CRAZY mom on the Duquesne parents page said she used to drive from Canada (6+ hrs away) to visit her daughter on a Saturday, have lunch, and drive back home. I thanked her for putting crazy ideas in my head.
I’m thinking… I’m thinking. I can do that!! I SHOULD do that. I probably WILL do that. I’m out!! ROAD TRIP !! … First I go to Dunkin Donuts for a bagel and lattee, hit the highway, stop at the last Wawa in Frederick, MD to pick up my son’s favorite Sandwich (Gotta have a Wawa!! He’ll be stoked) and be in Pittsburgh in time for lunch. YUP… that’s what I’m doing this weekend. When I come back, I’ll be too tired to do anything else . HA !!
I typed it out… so it’s happening!! As soon as I get out of my jammies
Have fun @BenniesMom1 i could definitely see me doing that. Enjoy your hug
We are taking a quick overnight trip to a resort near our alma mater. We will stop there first for lunch at our favorite sub place and find somewhere to eat outside. I hope to hike to the top a mountain by the resort.
Sunday, we will pick up our new cat. H found one he loved. We thought we wanted a male kitten. We are getting a female cat. They said approximately 2 years, but she seems closer to 1. She’s tiny. Mostly a black tuxedo cat, but the black is a black/gray marble pattern. She’s super sweet. She was taken to the vet Thursday to be spade, but found to have a fever and respiratory infection. They said we could bring her home until she was ready for surgery, but we asked for them to keep her until we got back. If she feels bad, she doesn’t need to be thrust into a new huge house with 3 other cats and then have us go away! Her name is Dembe after the Blacklist character. But we later googled it’s a unisex name than means peace.
We are going to see our D. Driving down with no stops, bringing lunch, and will eat in her room (no roommate this year). She’s been careful and it feels no riskier to me than going to work (which I’ve been doing since the end of May). I can’t wait to see her!
We are going for a morning walk on the beach today then off to get our flu shots. D2 is spending the weekend with a friend that is also living with parents so has been very careful so H and I have the house to ourselves!
Weekend started with a successful tax protest and my mother finally getting her stimulus check! Had a drink outside with a neighbor while she finished up a political project, then we walked it over to the woman who is in charge. Really pleasant evening. Temperature was perfect. This will be the first weekend in forever that I am not mired in a political project so I am going to enjoy and get back to work next week.
This morning, I’ll be watching football while riding my bike, and dh just said he wants to cook out so yea!
DH and I walked to the farmer’s market this morning. The weather was cool (around 50), but sunny. We picked up healthy stuff like winter squashes, eggplant, and kale, but treated ourselves to muffins and danishes. We’re usually very good about our eating habits, but you need to indulge now and then.
Played 9 holes of golf yesterday late afternoon with DH, this morning went to a one hour tennis drill with some friends. Need to keep these activities up while the weather is decent!
A bike ride, making a pot of chili, watching some football and then meeting some neighbors out front for a drink later. Hoping to do a lot of reading tomorrow and probably virtual yoga.
I really enjoy hearing what everyone does each weekend!
I was abruptly woken up just after 7am by my 15 y/o, who thought she was supposed to be at work at 9am (her regular shift). Apparently she was supposed to be at work at 6:30am for the opening shift and was woken up after receiving several texts from her boss (did I mention she has only worked there for maybe 3 weeks?). Dh raced her up there but she was not happy I wouldn’t let her shower first. Um, hello? If you are already late, you can’t take the time to shower - get over it and put your hair in a pony tail!! Anyway, she is normally very very responsible so not sure how she made the mistake, even though to her credit, she has worked three weekends and always worked the 9am shift).
So, that prompted me to get up and get started on the day. I’m making marinara sauce right now, for baked ziti that my daughter has been requesting for a while now.
Dh is cleaning our the summer garden and planting some of our fall lettuces and whatever else he has planned.
My 17 y/o has a soccer game this afternoon so I’ll be going to that. I’ll head over early with my dog as there is a nice trail through the woods that we can walk beforehand.
Tomorrow I may stop over at my parents’ house and sit outside on their porch. Taking some of what dh just pulled from our garden over to share with them (we still have some veggies producing). He also made an extra loaf of sourdough bread this morning that I will bring them.
After that I will be reorganizing the mess in the garage - after cleaning it last fall, it became a dumping ground when S19 moved home from college last March. All of his stuff went into the garage, and then dh just started making it a mess again with other stuff. So, time to clean it up, especially with winter coming. It would be nice to have at least one car in the garage.
Oh, and I will read my book any chance I get. Avid reader here, so fill most of my downtime with that!
Went to the farmer’s market for the first time since I TRIED to go in April but it was a disaster in terms of precautions back then. Better today, but a fair amount of people and PLEASE put your mask on your freakin nose!
Anyway bought some good produce and have two meals planned as a result in the next few days: deconstructed stuffed cabbage and poblano rice bake.
Watched my son win his JV football game Thursday night. Friday night was the homecoming game (we won) which the school allowed the full halftime so I got to see my son in marching band. Saturday was sitting in the rain watching my daughter dance at halftime for the middle school football team.
Now Im sitting at home critiquing my students work plus trying to do my own homework for a class I am taking. Oh, and starting my essay for my doctorate school application.
My weekend went in a different direction than planned when our son called me last night to discuss moving apartments within his building. I’ve been encouraging him to keep an eye out for a bigger place since his current apartment is relatively small and in my opinion a bit dark and dreary. And he seldom leaves it except to get food.
So last night he video called to walk me through a place coming up ASAP, but we both felt it wasn’t really what would suit him best. He’s currently in a one bedroom plus den and was looking at two bedrooms. Then after much research, we found a different one bedroom plus den and two bath, about 20% bigger than his current place, and on the top floor with a row of windows and two balconies and a sweeping view to the east. (They call it a penthouse apartment.) Although it’s not all that much bigger, the layout is far more open (better feng shiu, I told him) and the ambiance 100% more pleasant.
So today he talked to the front office and they sent him tons of pictures. He’s very excited and we spent at least another hour or more discussing where his furniture would go, where there was less and more storage in different areas, etc. I told him he could use the second bathroom for storage ;). It turns out that we actually saw that very apartment when he was originally looking for a place - they let him quickly peek in as an example. It had just been cleaned for rental so we couldn’t step far from the entrance, but I have a picture of him in the kitchen.
I’ve felt so bad for him in his cramped space, so this is a big relief. It will the first move we haven’t helped him with! But he doesn’t have to really pack, just keep bringing stuff up the elevator. And after he moves, he can do office video calls with the Space Needle in the background.
I mentioned possible kayaking in my original post, and just want to say that yesterday we went on a gorgeous trip around Cape May Harbor and the canal. Just perfect weather to be out on the water. Won’t be that way much longer, so I’m just so glad we got out and enjoyed it.
Now today–keep grading essays, make a video for async component of class, and hopefully time for a bike ride.
Drove out to Cape Henlopen State Park in DE on Thursday. The weather was glorious and there were very few people. My pup loved the sand. Stuck my toes in the water. Longest, but I can do it on one tank of gas. Did surprise curbside pickup from a local BBQ on the way home, which delighted my H.
Will probably do it again in the next two weeks, as I go into full quarantine on 10/16 before cardiac defibrillator surgery on the 30th.
Let’s see - Friday night we grilled steaks and enjoyed some wine. Yesterday, I got up at the usual time and ran 5 miles, then a few errands, housework and yardwork. Grilled pork chops and made a quick salad, enjoyed some wine. I’m sensing a theme here. Today, I took a big walk through town and campus. Mr. Sabaray and I took the pups to the park for a nice big hike which they enjoyed a lot more than Mr. Sabaray, I think. Tonight we are grilling burgers but not enjoyed wine as I am prepping for a job interview tomorrow. I’m a little nervous as it will be on Zoom but I’ve done a few test runs.
We ended up taking a more scenic drive home yesterday, not because we wanted to, but because some folks weren’t careful enough and ended up crashing on both I95 and I270 causing Google to reroute us. Our 3 1/2 trip took us 5 hours, though some of that was spent at a Popeye’s eating take out in our car.
Last night we walked a ton getting in some exercise and enjoying our farm. It was a picture perfect fall day. Then we ordered Chinese Take Out and played 7 Wonders with youngest and his wife. I won, by one point.
This morning we took our chances with Covid getting haircuts, allowing as much time as possible between exposure and returning to FIL’s. Tomorrow will be more exposure with grocery shopping and getting the car inspected. After that we hopefully won’t have any more - just in case.
Shortly after lunch we had some unexpected excitement. A combine drove by and snagged the overhead power line between our house and barn. Fortunately, H knows how to fix pretty much everything. I get to have a feeling of contribution here. Being wary of electrical lines I suggested turning off ALL the power until it was fixed - just in case there was a break in the protective sheath somewhere vs just the guide wire holding things up. H agreed it was smart and turned it off. There was a break… It’s now wrapped with electrical tape. I’m thankful for disaster training way back in my AF days when it was drilled into us to always be sure power is off before doing anything near downed electric lines. There was more exposure to the young lad doing the farming with this, so I’m glad it happened today.
We just returned from seeing the progress in the rental house. VERY happy with that. Hopefully it can get on the market next weekend or the Monday afterward.
The pony filly did get weaned this morning. All is going well there. This week some halter breaking lessons should be able to happen. For a couple of days she mainly gets to feel sorry for herself. Her mama seems happy to be off “mom” duty.
Now I’m opting to relax. I probably should be going through three weeks worth of mail, but one more day won’t change anything there, so…
It’s Balloon Fiesta Weekend here! Only there’s no Fiesta this year. It was cancelled back in April. (Apparently though, at least a few people didn’t get the memo. A couple of RVers showed up at the Fiesta’s RV park during the latter part of the week and were shocked to discover there weren’t going to be any events.)
The Fiesta is still going on small scale with a single balloon (or 3 or 4) doing a ascension from several city public parks. Ditto for small scale Balloon Glows. Tickets are required to attend the events in person in the park so the city can limit the number of attendees, but the tickets are free. Masks & social distancing required. Balloon Fiesta swag is being sold online.
What I’m doing? Preparing the yard for fall, mowing grass, fertilizing, raking, clearing garden beds and pruning perennials.
I’ve also watched some of the balloons ascend from my front yard.
But, man, I wish someone would make me a breakfast burrito…
(I know I can make one myself, but it’s just not the same.)
