What are you doing today?

At the periodontist office hopefully just to get stitches removed. And awaiting more nasty weather…snow then possibly freezing rain. All schools in this area closed!

Or second guess the discards. My husband always says, “Why throw it out? It’s not hurting anybody.”

DH is going to a spring training Cubs game with his buddies. Mom and I are going out to lunch and probably wander a couple of her favorite stores.

Well, day just took a turn as I discovered that our hot-water heater is leaking.

DH has a lot of great qualities. Home maintenance if not one of them. I told him two days ago about a wet spot in the garage, but he blew me off. Today, I insisted that he investigate. And if he didn’t have so much crap piled up in front of the hot-water closet we might have seen the discoloration on the garage drywall.

Glad I still had some workout endorphins going …

Good start to the day by sleeping in until 9:00, which meant almost nine hours of sleep, the most I’ve gotten in any night in weeks (maybe months). The 13 hour trip from Sydney may have contributed!

Then..

  • wash hair
  • make pancakes and a nice pot of coffee. Many of the NZ hotels had a single machine dispensing specialty coffees in their breakfast buffet, which meant all of the dozens of people rushing to get going on their tours were lined up waiting while each individual cup brewed. One or two hotels actually had a separate urn with regular coffee.
  • returned rental car since we were too tired to do it yesterday and there was no extra charge
  • picked up mail on hold; now sorted and some dealt with
  • four loads of laundry; husband did three of his own; much of mine is hung to dry
  • got almost all the extraneous stuff put back where it belongs. Not bad considering I was gathering it for weeks.
  • caught up on my favorite comic storylines
  • went through trip paperwork and tossed whatever would not possibly be needed anymore

Unplanned:

  • called AAA to jump my battery (car had been on RV pad) only to learn it was dead, not discharged so replaced the nearly six year old battery. Glad that at least the battery died peacefully at home.
  • half an hour waiting to talk to newspaper to get lower renewal rate than in bill that came. Success.
  • almost falling asleep twice in the afternoon; thank you jet lag.

Tomorrow I need to start getting going on taxes. And downloading photos from my phone. Those together should take most of the day!

I hope you enjoyed your trip! But also “home sweet home” :house_with_garden:

Overall, yes, we did enjoy it but didn’t consider it a “trip of a lifetime,” as a neighbor said. We were satisfied with all the decisions we made and wouldn’t have done things differently. Some of the experiences were wonderful, and some were less than our expectations. Perhaps this is because in a way, many experiences were if not similar at least reminiscent of places we’ve been elsewhere. So didn’t feel unique.

I am very glad to be staying still and not to be continually moving. My fitness app on the phone will be disappointed but I am relieved. My weight is down one pound which is within my normal parameters (husband gained six pounds but he’s a much bigger eater than me; I was sometimes having trouble finding food I liked withing the limits of the tour).

I may muse more in the retirement travel thread.

I visited a dear friend that I’ve known since 1982, when I graduated law school. I brought a photo book of our former law firm and we reminisced and talked about the people we knew and memories we shared. We then had a nice lunch together. I was relieved to learn she has people coming in 8am-noon M-F, to see what she needs, drive her around and help keep her place neat and help as needed. (She has dementia and it’s sadly advanced considerably over the last few years—fortunately she’s given up driving and has others drive her.)

I drove to her place & back home along the ocean, coastal road, which is always relaxing and refreshing. It was so good to see her happy and remembering the good times we shared.

She said it was one of her best days in a long time. :two_hearts::mending_heart:

I forgot that to say that Jack Daniels and I are staying up late to watch election returns!

Another day in the city visiting my friend who had brain surgery for a glioma. She has been talking in word salad (aphasia) and has also been combative over the past week. Today I walked in at 9am to be greeted normally, light in her eyes, coherent speech (well, 80%) and she is being transferred out of hospital to rehab. Pathology news is still pending, and will probably be glioblastoma (not good) but for now we are so happy she is herself.

I woke up very early to a beautiful snowfall. The moon was so bright I thought the outside lights were on! I took some photos. It’s just after 5:30 am and I am DETERMINED to have a normal work day. Ha, if I succeed, that will be a first in months. I’m going to put a block (an app called “Freedom) on my computer so I’m not tempted to go on CC or Facebook!

Packing, cooking, changing sheets, and house prep today. Oh, and meeting with my trainer at noon.

While the DC weather will be glorious in coming days, my timing is bad, as it won’t be as warm at my destination. I’m joining my husband’s sibs in Surfside Beach SC for the final gathering for his parents’ ashes. I’m cooking in preparation and bringing much of my refrigerator’s produce contents.

When I get back on Sunday, I need to do final packing…Monday I leave for Iceland for 10 days. I’m traveling with the same college friend I did Alaska with last year.

Onward.

I woke up early to an ice covered driveway. Luckily, my first outing is to lunch, and by that time, it’s supposed to be over 40…and the sun is out.

Then dance lesson this afternoon.

Really…a quiet day!

Iceland is one of my favorite places on earth. I’ve been lucky to have been twice.

I’m meeting a neighbor for a walk in a few and then need to go shopping for a new pair of sneakers. I walk so much that I go through them quickly.

Just returned from dropping H at the airport. He is going to Las Vegas for the day for work. I have a lot of work to catch up on today since we were skiing last week. At least I am working at home today and the cats are keeping me company!

I’m getting to go to the ER! One out of town. During my run this morning my heart felt fluttery and was beating real fast and it won’t come down. Our employee clinic was able to see me and do an EKG which was not normal and they can’t get my HR down. No other symptoms except I’m panicking.

My aunt - the retired anesthesiologist - saw the test and said it could easily be stress and overexercising. Both are very real possibilities. I hope that’s all it is… this was NOT the day I had planned!

My H has been having issues with tachycardia and atrial flutter currently. There are lots of meds they can use to get your rate back down and options for treatment if it’s not a one off.

Sending good thoughts your way!
